I logged on for the first time in several days. I was notified that I was banned for "Offensive Language". Would anyone care to explain this to me. I received no emails or could not contact the person performing the ban. I have no idea who even performed this ban.

I am pretty sure that if you go through all of my posts that I have never used offensive language. So, please explain this to me.

If you were truly banned, how are you able to post at all? I'm sure someone will explain.

When I logged in, I got a notice that I was banned until 6PM 9/27 and was not able to get into anything. It also said second time 7 day ban. 3rd time permanent ban. So, i'm still befuddled about all of this.

I've noticed the policy here is to ban without warning. I don't think any other board I'm on does that. A warning would be nice, to give one a chance to explain, apologize, weasel, whatever.

At the Clubhouse we have a three strikes your out deal. One is a warning from a Mod and ect the second is a timeout for 2 weeks depending on the Offense and Finally is a Banishment and that only happens if you are completely out of Control. But all three times the person is either sent a email or pm notifying what is going to happen.:dude:Im suprised they do not do that here to give the person a fair chance to undo what they did wrong.

A quick check of your recent posts reveals Griffworks gave you a time-out as the result of remarks made in post #11 of the A-Team van thread. The original post has been edited by Griffworks, so I have no way of knowing what language was deemed offensive. I suggest you PM Griff directly if you still have questions.

I assume the word in question is a colloquialism with the general meaning of "strong, tough, aggressive." It can be either a noun or an adjective. It's a compound word consisting of "bad" followed by a slang term for the rump, backside, butt, posterior, or tuchus.

Most of us probably wouldn't find it offensive, but rules is rules.

Eric K
09-28-2009, 06:49 PM
Well, if that was considered offensive and, Griff wants to ban without even a notice, then, i think this is not the place for me. So long to you guys. With some of the crap I've seen and heard here, and *that* is what gets noticed, then, there is no telling what will tick somebody off. And, when you use a word that is is commonly used on major TV and now accepted as non-offensive, then get banned over it, I will be happy to relieve you of monitoring one more person.

You got the BAN because I've gone in and edited your posts before, as well as that of others - and each time I put in the edit column LANGUAGE! or something similar. You used the phrase bad "posterior" in your post, something that's accepted on some TV networks, but has never been accepted here - and again, something I've edited out of a great many posts in the past. I've publicly mentioned it and it's in the TOS about using "adult language" or using symbols in an attempt to get around that particular rule. I'm no prude, but the rules are here and if it were Hank who saw that he might well have made it a much longer BAN or a Perma-BAN.

I thought the software would have emailed you with the reason for the BAN. Wrong for me to assume so, I guess.

Since you've continued to use such language - as well as others - even after my edits and posts w/in threads, I decided to get your attention - which I guess worked out as planned. I've tried posting Infractions to people's accounts and it's done no good, as well as the aforementioned edits and postings w/in threads. All to no avail. I guess what I can start doing is just enforcing the rules as they're posted - which means NO EXCEPTIONS. 'Course, then, about half the posters here would be gone.

So, JohnP, Eric K and others who are disgruntled over the issue, you've just helped me to make a decision as to how I'll enforce the rules from this point on - Zero Tolerance for rules violations. Ignorance of the rules is not an excuse, either, as you have to read the TOS in order to apply for membership here. Plus, there's a handy lil' button at the top that says "Help/TOS" that you can click on.

If you have no clue what the TOS says or are too lazy to click it, here's the main points:

1. Treat everyone with respect. While we all may not agree with what everyone's opinion, many people come here to get different opinions. Because someone does not agree with you does not mean you should get nasty with them. Treat others with respect and you will earn everyone’s respect in return.

2. We will not tolerate vulgar language, NO exceptions! Not even words with letters XXXXed out. If you have to X out a word then you already know it is bad. We have many younger people that visit here and we want to keep this a place where everyone is welcome and comfortable.

4. Please refrain from posting about politics and religion. These are two subjects that are sure to cause deep feelings to come about and have no place on a hobby related web site.

I've cut a LOT of people a LOT of slack here, but since it appears that I'm inconsistant or some such, then I'll just do a more Heavy Handed job of moderation. Sounds like even more fun than I've already been having w/some of you folks....

For the vast majority of you, no worries. You don't have to walk on eggshells and worry about a BAN. Prolly 99% of you act like adults and follow the rules, thus have not a thing to worry about.

Eric, obviously you followed the rules that have been in place for quite some time. That's why you've been able to post well over 1700 posts. Just pretend there's a ten-year-old kid reading whenever you post something. As an adult, I'm sure you can find words in the English language to convey what you want without resorting to breaking any of the rules here. Think of it as a challenge to your intelligence. Can you do it? Obviously you can, since you've been here so long already. One thing I'm sure you've found is double-entendres can be used freely here. Are you up to the challenge of creating posts witty enough to express your views within the well-established boundaries here? Instead of getting angry at Griff, acknowledge your error in judgement, and redirect that energy to post creative, thought-provoking messages in the future. I'm sure most people here would rather see you continue to be an active member. I know I would.

This is a weird thread topic, shoulda gone straight to the mod. I used to post here alot. Won some contests at the Polar Lights BB. After awhile, got tired of some of the silly stuff. Lurk alot now.

Movies my favorite. Mobieus good stuff too. as well as Sci Fi Model BB and Slotcar BB. Hobby Talks a really a great place and hard to stay away from. Im sure he'll be back, or just lurk in the shadows.

Hey Phrank, youre a longtimer. Check out my post count since 1999! Weird. It oughta be 10k. Somehow, my post count got nuked! Funny!

If I remember correctly, Hank deleted a lot of stuff around 2003. I know my post number dropped by at least a few thousand. I'm surprised to see I've made it back to the 2000s. When Hank gave titles to the amount of posts I believe I'd made it to the 3rd or 4th level. John P is, and was, in the second level at first, but then made it to the top level. I think Yamahog had more posts than John P until Yama stopped being a moderator. Then Hank pruned all of the early posts leaving John P reigning supreme ever since.

And even then, JohnP was handicapped just like everyone else who had posts pruned. He just climbed back up to Top Dog status a lot quicker than most.

Also, Hank isn't the only one who pruned a bunch of threads/posts. And no, it wasn't me. I've never done that except by accident one time. I've soft-deleted posts from folks on occasion, tho. (Soft Deleted means that you can see "Post Deleted By xxxxx" remaining, which allows Mods and Admin to go back in and read what was written by clicking "View Post".)

1969? Explain.

People used to ask that. I liked to tell them it was just really forward thinking on Hank's part to have founded HobbyTalk so far in advance of the internet. Actally it was just an amusing glitch in the software that listed the registration dates of the earliest BBers here as '69.

It was even better than that: as time passed, the incorect dates listed actually migrated slowly backward. A few more years and I'd have been registered here before I was born.

Actually, I sold off a large portion of my posts. At one time, I had approximately 2,300 posts. I sold the majority of them to newbies so that they could pad their post count. Now I'm retired and living off the interest of the posts I sold.

Da Rulz (Hobby Talk Board)
Written by Yamahog

Rule 1)--No politics (i.e., potentially controversial threads that have nothing to do with modeling). I don't wanna hear no Republican/Democrat, gun, busing, integration, abortion/Right to Life stuff on this board. PERIOD.

Rule 4)--No potty mouth. Keep in mind that this is a family-oriented board. Let's keep it that way.

Rule 5)--There is still no Rule 5.

Rule 5A)--You have to like everyone here. Sounds easier than it is. And if ya can't get along, we have Rule 5B.

Rule 5B)--You have to at least pretend to like everyone here.

This board is asbestos-free, meaning no flames. Gotta problem with someone? Take it outside. Remember the wisdom that the board legend/hero/sage The CultTVMan offers when he says, "Maintain the spirit of the board." When he speaks, you listen.

Rule 9)--Promoting shows and events is okey-dokey...as long as you provide the when and the where.

Rule 10)--Never say "Never," here in the Clubhouse.

Rule 11)--Remember to "Pardon the Hamster."

Rule 12)--"Laotian666" is to be no longer referred to as "Laotion."

Rule 13)--Da Hawg's "Junior Member" speech is still banned.

Ah yes, Rule 5. Controversial in its day, it's interesting that most of the public schools in North Carolina have changed their approach to Gym and PE because of that rule.

Da Rulz were here when I joined back in late 99 / early 00,
And if ya broke them, you were banished to the monkey bars.

I'm not saying youre wrong, but I don't think we had a moderator back then. It seems to me Lisa was in charge of Polar Lights BB almost like a customer rep. It seems to me we all got along well without a moderator. We were all pretty stoked about the old Aurora kits coming back. When lots of people started signing on, and things started getting out of hand, thats when Lisa needed help and enlisted the aid of various moderators and rules. I could be wrong.

We had rules from the beginning, of course, and Lisa was mod for the PLBB from the get-go. And Hawg certainly wrote Da Rulz wEll bEfoRe KBN. What I can;t recall is whether he wrote Da Rulz for the PLBB, or if he wrote 'em for the Pirate BB and they were adopted on PLBB. If you'll remember, in addition to being 1st deputy to Lisa Hawg was also mod for The Pirate Board (which ended up becoming Movies for Modelers) so that we could have a place to talk stuff that was OT for PLBB.

When I started Yama was indeed a mod.
I remember getting a talking too from him for mentioning the 'G' word.
We also had Gwen back then also. But I can't remember if she was in place when I started, or if she came along later.
And at that time, I don't think he was running the Pirate ship. (which had looser rules than the PL BB, which was an official board. Remember the pics Markenstein used to post? )

Ok, a little quick research reveals that yet. Yama was mod of the modeling board first.
Then he joined staff on the PL BB in early 2000.
Then later that year we gained Silverback2 as a mod.

March 2000 (http://web.archive.org/web/20000308151646/http://www.hobbytalk.com/bbs1/Ultimate.cgi)

May 2000 (http://web.archive.org/web/20000520095806/http://www.hobbytalk.com/bbs1/Ultimate.cgi)

And looks like I was wrong about Gwen. She ran that Captian Action board.

Wow....that's a trip down memory lane.......There are so many names there I hadn't seen in ages!....and a few of the original "Registered" dates and post counts!

I was happy to notice I was actually able to click on my thread entitled, "Collector's Corner 2000 - PL/Aurora Product List (http://web.archive.org/web/20000709012005/http://www.hobbytalk.com/bbs1/Forum4/HTML/003510.html)".

I remember starting that list in Notepad strictly for my own use, so I'd know what I didn't have yet when I'd go out looking for more models to buy. James D. Farrow and I were posting messages about how we got started collecting Polar Lights models one night. I mentioned how I'd first found Frankenstein's Flivver and the Mummy's Chariot at Kmart one day on sale for $9.99 each. As I started buying more PL kits later, I decided to make a list of the kits sorted by model number. That's when I noticed most of the model numbers were the same as the last four numbers of the UPC numbers---except for the two I'd bought at Kmart. I posted my list asking Lisa if she knew why that was. James said he didn't know those particular model numbers didn't match their respective UPCs. He told me he checked his right afterwards, but the model numbers on his did match the last four UPC numbers. I quickly did a search on-line for the two kits in question. That's when I realized I'd bought the square boxed kits, while James had bought the long boxed kits. Variations!

Based on that discovery, James asked if I'd keep the list updated for his benefit and also for the benefit of others who might be interested. At first, James and I got kidded by yamahog and others about our detective work and continuous updates to the list. That's why I posted that comment on 10-06-2000 about it.

In case anyone is wondering about my web-site which the list eventually evolved into, it's down right now---but not for the count. My contract with Host Monster simply ran out in June. Due to a car problem I had to take care of immediately at the time, I had to reallocate my funds away from renewing my contract with Host Monster. The fact that they raised their rates didn't help. So....I have just about caught up with my bills at this time. (Heck, I even bought a couple of the CultTVMan Big Phrankies in the orange boxes.) It shouldn't be too much longer before my site is up and running again. I still own my www.phrankenstign.com (http://www.phrankenstign.com) domain, so that won't change. I'm shooting for the end of October or the beginning of November.

BTW TAY666, how were you able to save those pages along with the pictures? I remember doing the same a few years back, but the computer I had got screwed up and I lost it all. When I tried to save these three pages you posted, my IE v8 didn't save the pics.

Double-BTW Lisa claimed there was no real plan for allocating model numbers nor UPC numbers. When a kit was being prepared for release, the next available numbers were used. That may be what she believed at the time, but I'm guessing she wasn't entirely correct. I would think having unique model numbers would be essential to keeping tabs on the sales numbers. As the list grew, there did appear to be certain conventions they followed.
