I don't think any particular oval car is the best. I've only owned a few, but every one has its own advantages and disadvantages that vary from track to track.

Right now though, I'd have to say my favorite is the JRC Terminator. Easiest car to setup and drive that I've ever owned in the few years I've been involved in this hobby.

That new Custom Works Rocket swept the top three qualifying and finish positions at a big race they had in Illinois last month.

We have a track in oakly, and one in union city. Lm Cw int se is the dominent car,as well as JRC cars, and CW sprint cars, both gbx and dd are both good,we run 13.5's in the classes,we also have a gearbox edm class that is growing as well using b4 based cars to keep costs down.

EDM class GROWING out on the WEST COAST. Hear that, guys?

Koz, have any suggestions on how to help build an EDM class here? It's pretty popular in neighboring states and there are enough people around dedicated to dirt oval here, but for some reason, it's not happening.

We have ran the big dollar cars in the edm class, but it is working out better using b4 based cars ,cost wise and it slows them down just a tad on our smaller track, plus it seems every one either has an older offroad car or knows someone that has one for cheap, you can build a b4 based edm with a 13.5 for under 300.. bucks, shopping around, for good used stuff.

Hyperdrive Havoc. Its a Terminator based car and a couple hundred bucks cheaper than all the rest. Multi-time US Open Wheel Champion!

Shoot me an Email at matto29@yahoo.com and I'd be glad to discuss any questions you may have. I have raced dirt oval for nearly 20 years and have owned or used almost every dirt oval car out there.

All you need to do is get 3 or 4 guys to commit to racing them and stick with it till it takes off and it will. But the key is being consistant with running them. Maybe it is time to get the guys together Steve that have been talking about it and say, "time for some action".

I am a Custom Works dealer and am willing to work with guys on price to keep the cost as low as it can get, that always helps too.

This is a loaded question there are some great cars out there right now, Custom Works, JRC, Hyperdrive, Putnam. They all work you just have to find the car that suits your driving style. Any of these cars can ,will and have won big races its just not the car. You need to find the one that fits your style and your budget. Good luck and have fun dirt oval racing is the most competitive Rc racing going on right now!!

hey koz, i knew there was an off road track in brentwood but not oakley. do they have an oval track? i went to the oval track in fremont by frys, nice track. but i heard it closed. did it close? and i know about the off road track in union city, i think it's Nor Cal. do they have an oval? i have a nice size oval and off road track at my house. in fremont alot of the guys ran custom works. i'm just looking for an edge. i have a cw enforcer.

this might sound wrong but its ment to be positive. custom works se is a great way to get into sport. cost is real low. and alot of people have been running custom works and u can get some good results. the putnam i have to say has been a great car and u cant beat the support. when i first decided to run nitro not only did he help me out with the car he was there at my pit table and with me on driver stand helping get me adjusted to the way it works over elec for a whole race. cant beat 1 on 1 support for all his cars. might cost more but the support and capablitys of the car will make it more of a investment into the hobby than a way to get into it cheap. just some food for thought.

Simple answer to the question. Putnam cars are the best, a little more money then some but I would buy a used Putnam car before a new anything else. And Todd will spend the time with you to make it work, Todds been racing and winning since the first battery was invented..... Any questions call him up, he has used cars all the time for sale if its a money thing.

The real question is where will you be running? Loose dirt? Packed clay? Buggy tire or foam? Those questions will make a big difference in the car you need to look at?

i like alot of the cars out. ill say that the putnams seem to win a good share of the races. but with the talent of drivers that run the cars im sure thats a huge help also. but the geometry is right thats for sure!

Multi-Time US Open Wheel Champ?

Mark Corns - 2007 US Open Wheel - Mod EDM
Dustin Malicoat - 2008 US Open Wheel - 13.5 Sprint

Those were 2 I was thinking of off the top of my head.

No offense to Mark but it was after the race his car would not go thru the tech box ..so did he win [??]. To be honest all the cars listed have pros and cons ,But I love my Putman car and wouldnt want any other car to go fast with on DIRT ... With the customer support and knowledgable drivers you can not go wrong with the PUTNAM>...SRM

it s fun to read the CW intimidator SE is a great car top get into the sports!! i don t think the SE is only good to get into the sports....this car is the more ajustable dirt oval car on the market!! so this car can compete against any other car!!! and this car can win any race!!! so for the price this car is the one to have!!!

Yes for sure the SE is an awesome car best dirt car i have ever had to fit my style of driving. More expensive is not always better!! Its a great car for a great price and no problem getting help from the CW guys. But again you need to buy what you can afford and what fits your driving style.

pace thats why i said it was going to sound bad. i ment the price for what you get makes it the best value to get into the sport with. didnt mean anything bad by it but im sure it came off bad which i had feeling it might if read wrong.

Are price and support the only thing that sets the dirt oval cars apart? Any opinions on the technical differences of the cars? Things you like or dislike about each car? I am considering the switch to dirt and am trying to make an educated decision as to what car to go with. Thanks. Bob Rhodes

good question Bob i havent gotten a full answer on this yet and id like that alot also. but i do hear guys say that they like a certain car alot and reccomend it highly because they do well with it. one thing i have heard is that you want a car with plenty of flex in it. not sure how true that is yet but ill figure it out eventually

siggy99x
09-15-2009, 04:21 PM
Personally i dont care for the term based cars because of the alum nose plate and it is dated technology, Nothing against any of those cars there fast and been beaten by them and I won using them myself. Again my personal opinion. I do think the cars with more flex are a little more forgiving on set up meaning you dont have to be dead nuts on the chassis. Flex sort of helps make the sweet spot a bit wider. I like the Se car because of the many options you have to tune and adjust the car and it has a ton of flex. And you cant beat the price for a race car out of the box. I have been competitive with both types of cars. Again it comes down to what you prefer. There all good cars and they all win races.

I'm like siggy, they are all good cars. Most of it is in the driving and chassis. I'm running a Putman terminator and have had good luck with it. That's what I chose when I got into electric dirt oval. For the money today, I would go with the new Intimidator SE from CW. Good car with lots of adjustments, parts are east to get and the price is right.

switched from cw intimidator to putnam instead of the se because of a few reasons and like everyone said its mostly personal preferance. 1 thing that always buged me about the cw chassis and even a few others i looked at without the terminator style front is that they were flat cf. you lose alot of front suspension travel with it and it bottoms out and would slide on some tracks where it rolls alot to right front. i think flex allows chassis to bite on to a hard/tacky track better and u dont lose traction as easially. i also like the way putnams have the tranny cut out in the chassis so its mounted lower than others giving lower cg along with the narrower chassis plate giving more arm movement in the rear. the support reason i also choose the putnam because well the guy lives 20min away and is always at track when i go. and alot of guys have them at local track so plenty of people to get help from.

talked to pace g (not trying to spell that lol) and steve salvas at the summer nats and are hell of nice guys and im sure would be capable of offering any help needed with the se cars. its just a matter of what type of track your on. whats most common near u. what things u like.

I haven't played with the new custom works car, but I'm not in love with that steering setup or the front end design. Most of the hard core race nuts can make almost anything go fast, it's just easy to buy something thats a winner out of the box....Buy a Putnam car.

This is my first year running Dirt oval and I went with a Custom Works GSX Intimidator, I have been Struggling a little with getting the set up right, I ran my Buddys Open Sprint Terminator and it was like night and day. Now I know a Late Model and a sprint car Handle different but his car handles SWEET. But with that being said There are Lots of CW cars at our track that fly, So im not giving up on it yet.

I think all cars are good! you have to look at a few things

Part Availability
Support both local and from the manufacture
cost

and what you gut tells you.

I believe that any car in the right hands can be fast, I also believe there are cars that have a wider window of forgiveness when it comes to set up.

So the choice is best made by traveling to your local track and looking around at the cars that race and know that if you pick something that is local to you. that you should have the parts, and support to make your racing experience an enjoyable one.
