View Full Version : New Oval RC Website?
GearboxGraphics 08-25-2009, 03:05 PM So, suppose someone were going to build a website that catered specifically to oval carpet and cap tire racing. And, suppose that website could be found at http://www.ovaledge.com.
Now, lets say that website featured daily news, reviews, event coverage, downloads, touring schedules and results, etc., etc. that all pertained specifically to oval racing.
If such a website were in the works, what do you think you would like to see there? What would make you visit it regularly and interact with other oval racers, post comments about articles, etc.??
I think one problem with oval is there really is not one prime location to go to on the web for oval specific news, info, and community. Obviously, we have the wonderful Hobby Talk, but it is only a forum. If you look at other forms of RC, they have 32,000 sites where one can go and get up-to-date info on the hobby.
Why can't oval have that?
We can, and I am going to do it. What I would like is some feedback from the oval community on what YOU would like to see on the site? Everyone has favorite sites that they visit, so why do you visit them? Features? news? photos? Hopefully, we can toss some ideas around and create another piece of the puzzle that can help bind the oval community together.
I greatly value feedback and ideas on this project so that I can create something that everyone loves. I would appreciate your feedback on the idea.......

katf1sh 08-25-2009, 05:26 PM oval racing had a radio program once a week...gone
oval had a few oval only web sites....gone
keeping the site fresh and with up to date news and reviews sounds great..but people only do it for a few months..than life catches up with them..
and we do have a site for oval chat (HOBBY TALK) with the greatest moderator and web owner of all time (HANK) he doesn't allow things to get out of control...yet still allows guys to have fun and poke each other a little....plus you can sell your stuff on his swap and sell page....
the idea would be.....
to get a ton of companies to announce new and up coming products on your site first
to get a ton of companies to have there own thread where team drivers would post set-up advice and set-ups (no more ....my gen 3 is dialed and I won race X and race Y with it) give the people set ups not back pats......
pictures of team drivers cars to get an idea on how and where he mounted electronics
how to care for lipos rumors myths and truths
the paint shop....get jody to write a few articles on painting with lots of pics
track finder...web addys and pics of your track (owners only)
race locater...where is the next big race at
naked woman......lots of naked woman
we have most of that now with hobby talk it's just hard to find sometimes....
this would take alot of work each day
good luck
bill
GearboxGraphics 08-25-2009, 07:01 PM Thanks for the feedback Bill. You certainly touched on a few things that I also have in the works for the site.
I do this stuff for a living, so I understand what it takes to make it happen, keep it fresh, and keep it interesting. I think you guys will like what I have planned for the site.
Also, please know that I love Hobby Talk and support it to the fullest. I learned a long time ago that you have work with people, not against them in order to make things be successful. I have no plans to add a forum or anything to my site that would take away from the loyal following here on Hobby Talk.
Stay tunes guys, I am working on it. In the mean time, I would still like to hear feedback from anyone willing to provide it.

mGraves 08-26-2009, 09:28 PM Will you include carpet oval coverage??
GearboxGraphics 08-26-2009, 09:34 PM Will you include carpet oval coverage??
Absolutely, in fact I figure a majority of it will be carpet related since that is the larger portion of the oval community.
My goal is to cover the entire oval spectrum. The actual racing and what is happening around the country at any given time will dictate how much of that is focused on carpet, paved, nitro, etc.

J-Dub Racing 08-26-2009, 10:35 PM Sounds great. And like Kat said lots of Naked women would be great!! None of that girl of the month stuff...We need girl of the hour..or min....LOL
But like everyone said and you know keep it fresh, and updated and it should be a great site/resource for all oval racers to use.
mGraves 08-27-2009, 12:13 AM Cory,
You do this for a living so you should be able to keep up on it. I think that's why a lot of sites don't make it. I'd love to see a site that's strictly oval....with the new latest and greatest products! Goodluck Bro'.

Thanks! I think you guys are going to like what I am putting together. It is certainly no easy process and takes a ton of man hours to code it up and make it happen, but I feel like the oval community really needs something like this.
The key is making sure that once it is live, the oval community will get involved and make it a great online community for everyone.

GearboxGraphics 09-01-2009, 02:03 PM Progress on the site is coming along quite well! I am having to code a few features up from scratch since my CMS of choice didn't really support them the way I needed it to out of the box.
FYI, I will be looking for a few beta testers late next week to start doing some testing on the site for bugs. If anyone is interested, please shoot me a PM.
B-man777 09-03-2009, 10:02 AM Sounds like this may turn out to be a great site for us oval fans. The site is already up,but when will it be useable? Thanks

I am officially looking at October 1st for the site launch. I have about 40% of the site currently built and ready. I am still working out a few issues and trying to figure out a way to do certain things that I want to do that the system currently does not support.
Needless to say, many hours of coding from scratch! But, I think the end result will be well worth the effort. I plan to launch the site with a core set of features and then progressively add new features based on feedback from you guys, and how the site evolves.
Stay tuned.....good things are coming.
B-man777 09-03-2009, 05:51 PM hey gearbox: Thanks for the quick response and best of luck on the new rc oval site. Thanks again
GearboxGraphics 09-10-2009, 08:59 AM Let me ask you guys something about the new site......
Do any of you guys have a problem with having to sign up for a FREE account and having to be a member of the site in order to post comments, add events, add tracks, etc.?
An account would also give you access to your own profile, adding photos and media, and then later on down the road......friends, personal instant messaging, etc.
In order to implement many of the useful features that I plan on having, everyone would need to be a member in order to contribute to that. You would not need to be a member in order to view the site, read news, check out photos, etc. You would only need to be a member if you wanted to comment on articles, add upcoming events, or add any other content to the site.
I know it is another user name and password that you would have to remember or keep track of, but it is certainly in the best interest of the site to do it that way. Are there any objections to that happening??

HAH your going social media on us huh. It's what we all do here but the social media deal is even better. Ning is pretty cool, was thinking about it myself.

Yeah, I can see the social media aspect being tied into it down the road for sure. The main goal is to be able to moderate content that is being put on the site such as upcoming events and track listings etc. It will also greatly help with keeping spam and the like to a minimum.
Ning is pretty cool, but very limited in what can actually be done outside of basic social media features. My plan is to custom build a solution using a CMS as the foundation for it. That way, the limitations of adding new features later are kept to a minimum.
bboard 09-10-2009, 12:57 PM I can't wait, I was dissapointed when I seen ''COMING SOON''. And it's gonna be another forum for me to go to on a daily basis. Definatly would like to see Tracks, Setups, Paints, Electronics, and an Event thread.

swtour 09-13-2009, 09:08 PM When I was with NORRCA - we tried to get Tracks and Race directors to send US event info, race stories, events and pictures.
We had the web site and were more than willing to help promote each sanctioned tracks events (Local or Sanctioned) but rarely did the track guys want to take the time to do it theirselves. They wanted someone else to come and do the work to promote them.
I've been told the same thing by several magazine guys - YOU SEND US STORIES and IMAGES and you can get your races in the MAGS. (I admit, I don't do it very often, but every time I have - it has been published... plus Boylan gets us coverage in Xtreme R/C a couple times a year, if I send him 125 words or so, and some pics.
I try to promote OUR racing everyplace I can - that I have some control of.
We have YOU TUBE Videos, our OWN domain and web site for our Series (www.southwesttour.com) , and for our ANNUAL "Big Race" (www.allstar-shootout.com)
WLMaye 09-14-2009, 09:27 AM I think another hurdle is that some race track promoters are a little web site illiterate. I know it took me quite a while to get a basic understanding of how to build and maintain websites. Go for it Cory! Focus on helping the new generation of racers with how to videos and product info. Put together a list of essentials that all new racers need so they don't buy a lot of stuff they don't need. If I had the time I would have already started on it.
Bill
GearboxGraphics 09-14-2009, 09:57 AM I have no doubt that the initial work involved in making this thing successful will be major. I just think that once it gets going and it becomes a go-to resource for people, promoters, racers, and track owners will step up and pitch in with info on events, tracks, etc.
In the beginning, I plan on handling that stuff on my own. From there, we will see how it goes! This may not work at all, but unless I give it a go, I have no way of knowing for sure.
Go4iT 09-14-2009, 03:44 PM Get some video links to go with those BIG race stories.
my 2-cents.
GearboxGraphics 09-22-2009, 01:23 PM Quick Update......
The site is coming along quite well, and so far, I am still on for an October 1st (or soon after) launch date!
I now have all of the member profile areas built and configured, registration functions are done, and all of the base pages are built and configured. I have setup all of the news and article functions and tested those. The commenting system is completed as well.
I have a few other key sections to build out and code this week and then I can move on to testing in all browsers and fine-tuning some things!
I will post another update soon on the progress of the site!
MIDWESTRC 09-22-2009, 05:06 PM Gearbox, thanks for all your doing.:thumbsup:
GearboxGraphics 10-05-2009, 10:45 AM Another quick update.....
Well, site is almost finished and ready for a full launch. I have run into a few snags that have made me go crazy, but most are worked out now and everything is back on track finally! Some of my original features will be moving to later dates and will be added along the way once the site is launched. Since I want to be able to regularly add new features and continue to improve on the site based on user feedback, this is the best way to go for now.
I still have a few things to button up this week and then do some serious testing on everything to make sure all is secure, working, and functioning properly. So, I should be launching the site sometime around October 15th or so.
Also....
I am looking for interested individuals that may want to contribute to the site with local racing updates from their local tracks. I would like to post results each week from as many local tracks as I can, but I would need people from those tracks providing those updates to me.
If you are interested in doing so, please shoot me a PM so that I can start gathering that info up accordingly and working out a way for people to provide the info.
I think you guys are going to be really happy with the final product! Thanks All!
nitro4294 10-21-2009, 02:05 AM Any news about the web sight? I have been trying it for the last couple days and it's not up yet.
Thanks man!!
GearboxGraphics 10-21-2009, 08:48 AM I am getting close to launching it! I lost a week of work on it last week because I had the flu so things got pushed back a bit.
A couple of things have taken a little longer than I planned, because I have had to build some things from scratch. I also want to be sure that when it goes live, it is ready and there are no major flaws that I totally overlooked!
GearboxGraphics 10-23-2009, 09:40 PM ***Update***
I have decided to wait and launch the site in conjunction with the 2009 Ovalmasters race. As part of that launch, my plan to is provide live updates on the site, as well as photo galleries from each day of the race.
The site itself is really close to being ready, I just have a handful of small items to clear up. I am also working on a few feature articles for the initial launch, and I am still working with a few companies to get some advertising in place.
So, be on the lookout for the site to be live on the Thursday or Friday of the Ovalmasters weekend. For those of you that contacted me to do some private testing on the site, I have sent all of you the info through a PM.
JeffPatch29 11-05-2009, 12:15 AM Site is up and looks great Cory, can't wait to see the coverage from oval masters!!!
GearboxGraphics 11-05-2009, 12:20 AM Thanks Jeff, I finally got phase 1 done and live!
I feel pretty sure I missed a few small bugs, so please let me know if you guys see anything that doesn't act quite right! Launching a new site and getting ready for a huge race in the same week was probably not a good idea!!
Stay tuned for a lot of other features and stuff coming on the site soon. I hope you guys enjoy it as much as I have enjoyed putting it all together.
swtour 11-06-2009, 03:59 AM Very nice looking site!! Thanks for adding our Video from our Lindsay race!!
nitro4294 11-07-2009, 12:44 AM Very nicely done web sight. Thanks man!!!!

GearboxGraphics 11-09-2009, 11:50 AM Thanks for all the support so far from everyone! The launch went pretty well and only had to fix one or two small bugs so far.
Over the next few weeks, I will be adding some other new features as well. In the mean time, is there anything that you guys want? What would you like to see? I'll do what I can to make it happen.
tats31 11-09-2009, 05:20 PM Hey cory great job, but I only saw one pic of the best looking body there.
GearboxGraphics 11-09-2009, 08:51 PM Hey cory great job, but I only saw one pic of the best looking body there.
That is because people would never be handle more than 1 photo of that body. They are not ready for that yet..... :)
