I am no idiot but I sure feel like one. I have a 12 hp B&S on a Murray rider. I can not get spark. I changed plug and no spark. I have checked the ground wire (black)to the coil and it's good. I have changed the coil and switched with a running mower and still no spark. I sanded the coil and flywheel and guess what...no spark. WHY????? I am going nuts I don't know what else to do. Did I miss anything or a wire I was not aware of? Please help. Thank you so much

Bad safety switches shorting coil to ground? TEMPORARILY pull the black lead apart (if it has a quick connect in line) and see if you get spark. Bad starter solenoid - no juice getting to engine. Beyond that praying helps.

Goodl luck.

Hi,

as Maytag and Billsmower mentioned, a bad safety switch could be the problem.

Also, check if the kill switch is not dislodged.

Also, check the strength of your flywheel magnet.
To check the strength, place a screw driver 1" from the flywheel magnet.
If the screw driver is strongly pulled to it, then the magnet is fine, otherwise, the magnet is useless.

When checking for spark, has the motor been turned at over 250RPM?

On occasions, I've had the spark lead not make good contact with the spark plug so that should be checked.

Is the machine pull start or electric start?

Let us know how it goes so we can work out the next steps.

Kind Regards

we use a peak voltage tester to check the ignition system on the one piece coils you are looking for around 15kv with spark plug lead disconected from the plug and 5- 6kv when conected to plug if you can remove the coil and get it to a small engine shop they can test it for you we use a mec-o- tronic model 79 ignition tester so we can test the coil off engine

also i have had a problem with starter selinoid pulling the coil to ground do,nt ask me how but this was the problem we found changed the selinoid all was ok?
