recently I found my old hawk 2 made by traxxas, I know this is an old 2wd but I would like to get it working. I have been looking into these brushless upgade kits with speed controls, they seem like a great way to get me back on a track. however I don't know what size esc to get 35A vs 60A and what size motor. I was planning on running the stock drive gear (84 tooth) and pinion gear (18 tooth). just looking for the best bang with out crushing gears.

Whatever system you go with, at least you can upgrade the gears in the tranny to metal gears from the slash.

you will want to upgrade the transmission to the vxl spec gears. You'll want a steel top gear if it doesn't have one already, you do not want the brass one. You will want the steel idler and the steel ring dif gear. I do not know what kind of dif that has but you could probably upgrade it to the planetary gear dif for cheap if the one in there isn't smooth anymore. I have a traxxas eagle which is similar vintage and I run a castle sidewinder esc and have tried a few different motors in it including a vxl motor, a few 13.5 sensored motors and most recently a cheapo turnigy 3300kv. The vxl was my favorite, I also like the turnigy a lot. neither ever get hot and I have used pinions as small as 15 and as large as 22 and its always been fine. The sensored motors were a bit coggy at low speed with the sidewinder. I also ran a novak xbr with a 13.5 in it for a while and it was good too. if I were to go with an ezrun i'd look at the 60amp with between an 8.5 to the 13.5 or something in the range of 3300 to 4500 kv
