View Full Version : Knoxville Nationals
Kevin V 08-10-2009, 11:46 PM Just a little information for all those making the trek to Knoxville.....The track is located in the Knoxville Events Center parking lot (Directions: go 4 blocks south of the Knoxville Raceway to the stop light; turn to travel east and go 5 blocks on West Pleasant St; track will be on the south side of the road). Track set-up will begin on Friday morning with racing on Friday & Saturday afternoons. A complete show will be run on Friday and Saturday. Top finishers from Friday will be guaranteed starting spots in the A main on Saturday. We are anticipating a good car count and good crowds.
The Knoxville Raceway has really been supportive of our racing event this year. They are asking for us to have a display both at the raceway throughout the week. A tent and table will be provided. Your help with staffing the both and displaying your cars will be appreicated. This is a good promotional opportunity for us. If you are able to help, feel free to post a reply or give me a call.
Any other questions you may have feel free to contact either Curt of myself. The best way to catch me after Wednesday is to call my cell....712-441-7001.
Looking forward to seeing many of you later this week!
Kevin; Leaving for Knoxville today. If you need help with the display look us up at the middle school or call me at 402-770-3571. Nick, patton should arrive friday a.m. and myself is staying at the middle school.

IN2RACIN 08-13-2009, 07:17 AM Tim Shaffer Wins!!
Kevin V 08-13-2009, 12:34 PM Late night. Time trials started at 11:15 and final checkers at 2:30. Wet, heavy track really made for difficult passing through most the night. The feature was great. Could throw a blanket over the top 5 with about 5 laps to go. Lapped cars got together and collected 2nd place Dollansky. Shaffer looked good in the heat and feature. He might have a good shot at Saturday night. Shaatz, while not dominating, came out on top of the nights points.

IN2RACIN 08-13-2009, 02:01 PM Go Tim!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Kevin V 08-14-2009, 01:19 AM Another night of 410 sprintcar action down. TK in the victory lane. Saldana is my pick for Saturday night. Might be a little premature to project before the Friday night Scrambles.
We had a quarterscale car display under the front stretch grandstands throughout most of the afternoon and into the evening until qualifying started. Alot of interested people looking at the cars and watching a video we had looping. Mike Willmann came with is car, motor and RR tire. "The Bandit" from Western Austrialia drew his share of attention. The display was a huge success.
The 1/4 scale racing fun begins tomorrow (actually later today) around 7:00am. Track set-up, practice and racing! I'll try to get results posted at the end of the day before going to the big races.
Kevin V 08-14-2009, 01:23 AM I wish I was there to see it! And race my 1/4 scale w/you guys.
GO TIM!!
Scott.....I told you that we would get you taken car of. You just have to say you're coming. Any year!
Brad Doty stopped by the display both. He seems to take note every year we have a both. He says he is too busy to come out and watch the races. If you were hear, I'm sure he would make the time. Kasey Kahne also stopped by. He talked with Mike and was really impressed. He acted like he had never seen the cars before.

That's funny , he and Jeremy Mayfield stopped by a couple years ago at the Royal Oak Grand National race and he acted the same way . Nice guy though , seemed genually interested .
The guy we really need to catch the eye of is Tony Stewart . He's really into RC racing , even owns a Rc company , I think he baught Competition Plus . Anyways Fred and a couple other guys put a display at his track at Eldoro in Rossburg Oh . a couple times .

Saldana is a good pick . Of course Shaatz is sitting pretty right now and ya can't leave out the Dude , somehow he seems to work his way in there . Although I'm not a big McCarl fan I think he's due to pull off a big one there . He used to have some success there. Guess we'll have to see how it shakes down Sat night . I'll be watching it on the tube .
Have a good race guys , miss being there .

Randy: Tony owns Custom Works - now based in the Charlotte, NC area. BUT, it's very ironic you mentioned Competition Plus - that's one of the magazines I've written for in the past! Nice people and I gained a lot of experience writing for them. Brought back lotsa' memories!
My pick for Saturday night??? Kraig Kinser - he's done well at Knoxville historically and you won't find any better equipment and the leadership of Jimmy Carr is top flight!
How does the Andretti replica paint scheme look on Schatz' car????
Starting to wish I was there......
FMurry8995 08-14-2009, 09:52 AM It really hurts to not be there. I had always looked forward to racing at Knoxville. The best experience I ever had with 1/4 and full size racing was the 96 Knoxville nationals. I hope the show goes well this year and I will be there next year if I'm not dead. That's the only thing that will prevent me from being there.
Good luck to all that are there this year. A race report and pics will be nice if possible.:wave:Thanks, Fred
IN2RACIN 08-14-2009, 10:24 AM The 83 cars looked good. GO TIM!! Don't count out the 1Z of Smith.

Kris , my bad , it dawned on me while I was at work I had the name wrong of the company . Getting old and forgetful . Should have remembered that name , one of the best electric sprinters I had on dirt was a Custom Works , I think that was before Tony though .
Sat . night pick ? can't say as I have a clue . The Wild Child was always a favorite and the Dude , his attitude sucks at times but ya can't deny his driving . Kraig won it all a few years back , he's due .

Thank you all for helping with this event. Every competitor helped in some way. Ranging from set-up, tear-down, scoring/computer sturff. Many others pitched in. Thank you to all.
hopper61250 08-15-2009, 08:22 PM Jerry, Curt & Kevin did an awesome job. I just wish more racers could have joined us...maybe next year.
Larry Hopson
skf99 08-15-2009, 08:52 PM Jerry, Curt and Kevin did a great job in running the show, once we got computer problems fixed it was a big relief for everyone!! This was my first time with 1/4 scale at knoxville and would like to see more grand nationals there next year. Brad, Dale and I will be back it was a GREAT time!!
Thanks Again
John Cero
Danielle 08-15-2009, 09:15 PM Dont mean to post on this; but I have a general question - we are new to TN; we are previous track owners and having the worst itch yet to get back in. We were indoor oval/banked carpet; but we are open to alot and hoping for some referrals to local tracks; what they have etc. We are close to Nashville, so Knox is a drive; is there anything near us??? Thanks!

The Knoxville in this thread refers to Knoxville Iowa. Not Knoxville Tn.. The nearest 1/4 scale tracks to you are Montgomery Ala. and Easly and Clover SC.
Danielle 08-15-2009, 09:43 PM Oh...that sucks...LOL, but thanks for the clarification...LOL - feel kinda stupid...but hey when havent I been on here and felt dumb....LOL...
Enjoy the race! Drive fast take chances!
MSadler 08-15-2009, 11:11 PM hey i saw Jimmy "The Bandit" Connellys car on the tv coverage!!
FMurry8995 08-16-2009, 01:05 AM And the winner is MOTHER NATURE....
IN2RACIN 08-16-2009, 10:26 AM The race is tonight @ 7 pm.
TerryI#6 08-16-2009, 11:36 AM You don't get told this enough, you guys put on a great show! I had a blast and I always look forward to racing at Knoxville. That was the quickest I have ever seen the track go up and come down. Now that the stand is re-numbered that should go a little smoother next time as well. See ya at the Cornbelts.
gearguy 08-16-2009, 01:55 PM Thanks, Kevin-Jerry-Curt - you did a great job putting together this race!! It was certainly appreciated by all. Also, the announcer did a great job...is he an apprentice announcer??
The only regret is that more drivers were not able to participate.
Bob (Jackie also)
Thanks goes to Kevin, Curt and Jerry for a great weekend of races at the Knoxville Nationals this year. You ran the races very fairly and treated everyone the same when it came down to calling the shots. I also want to say thanks for the payout i received even tho i didn't deserve any of it. 25 laps for the entire weekend does not deserve a payout LOL...
Concrats to Brad Hill for winning the Nationals

Curt V 08-16-2009, 03:59 PM I would like to thank all the drivers that were able to make the races this weekend and helped put up and take down the track. I appreciate all your kind words and we will see about next year.
Got totally drenched in the stands last night but I am still looking forward to the finals tonight. My pick is unfortunately Donny Shatz but I hope Stevie Smith can get his first.
Thanks
Curt Verschuure
FMurry8995 08-16-2009, 05:49 PM Curt:
With a bit more notice and a definate "Yes" we will run I am sure the turnout would have been better. Had I know earlier I would have made it part of my schedule. I will most definately be there in 2010 for the 50th. running of the Knoxville nationals. I have always thought that we 1/4 scale should be racing sprints there. Let me know what I can do to help make next year a big sucess.
How was the spectator end of it? Did you get many watchers? Did the big track promote it well? I enjoyed doing the booth a couple of years back. I would do that again.
Fred
Fred: Had a great time doing the booth also. Matter of a fact Brad Doty came over and look over the sprinter's sitting there, signed both cars. Casey Kain (not sure if that is spelled right) stop over and he messed with the front end of my sprinter (won't wash that axle anymore) and even Tony Stewart eyedball from the distance as he walked by. Seen more Stars at Knoxville then Kansas City Speedway. I think the booth was the best part (i didn't crash there lol) of the whole weekend.

MSadler 08-16-2009, 06:57 PM I too would love to come race there and watch the big boys go at it, that is so close to home, problem is i have to have all my vacation planed out by oct 1st for the whole next year. Are you guys going to do it again next year for sure?
Sprint76 08-16-2009, 09:42 PM I would also like to thank (along with my dad Dale) the Verschuures for putting on the race this year, the great looking trophy, and the pay out. It was a very memorable and enjoyable couple of days.
Brad Hill
dizzy 08-17-2009, 10:58 PM Zach an me just drove over for the day on Saturday and we had a blast, even though we struggled with Zach's car he had fun. Kevin and Curt and thier Dad did a great job, the announcer was super and racing in front of a crowd was great. Next I will get the days off from work and make it both days.
Thanks Everyone that made it a success.
Randy Baker 08-18-2009, 06:21 AM Congrats on the win Brad . Sorry to say it wasn't in the cards for me to make it this year . Sounds like we missed another good race . I already have it penciled in for next year and looking forward to coming out there .
Randy
DBDROTTZ 08-18-2009, 09:31 AM Made In Down For Saturday's Show, By Far One Of The Most Impressive Parking Lot Shows I've Ever Seen. The Whole Event Was Well Organized And It Was Really Cool To See A Crowd That Big Watching This Event. The Racing Was Also Very Good With A Bunch Of Close Action And Close Finishes In Both Features. We Were On The Fence As Far As Racing 1/4 Scale Next Year, Now We're Sold On It. Can't Wait To Go Racing Next Year And I'm Really Looking Forward To Knoxville Too. Everyone Involved With The Knoxville Show Should Give Themselves A Pat On The Back.
Rembrandt 08-18-2009, 01:56 PM Where are you from, there are several good used cars out there.

Thanks Randy. Hopefully we can all make it next year!
Brad
Curt V 09-07-2009, 03:23 PM After a discussion over the weekend with my father it does appear that there will be race in 2010. We would still like to have someone else run the race on race day but we think it is important to run the cars during the Nationals.
We have had brief discussion about location and I think we may have two options in 2010.
1. Go back to the Knoxville Community Center we were at this year with a hopefully repaved lot to run on.
2. DeVore Chevrolet on the North side of Knoxville has expressed some interest in the event so that would be a much large lot with potentially greater exposure closer to the race track and very close to the Campgrounds.
Let me know your thoughts either on this thread or E-mail me at cverschuure@msn.com
Thanks
FMurry8995 09-07-2009, 07:39 PM Curt:
I will put it on the schedule for next year. I will help on race day. Just as long as I can keep my car together I don't mind helping with the program. I will also volunteer for a display at the track. I'm sure I can get there early and help with setup and such.
Fred
dizzy 09-08-2009, 12:38 AM Hey Curt,
I'm glad to hear there be a race next year. I am going to get it on my calendar so I can get there every day. I probably cannot help the day of, with trying to keep 2 cars running, but I can help before and after. One thing I was thinking about was making some business size cards to give to people that has the QSAC site on it and what ever else we think should be on it. I had a ton of people ask where they can get info and I would tell them but how many would remember? With the card in their pocket they will have a reminder. What you think?
tholloway 09-08-2009, 11:14 AM That's a good idea! I do that with the cards and it worked out great! Plan on putting in on my calendar next year also!

Jim Bell (QSAC Web-master) did up a QSAC card ~ biz size. I pass'em out all the time. Great idea!
dizzy 09-08-2009, 11:37 PM I did not know Jim made some cards!
Jim can you send me an email and we can pass the info back and forth. dizzy@infionline.net
