Well its done. I started with a 10x10x10 clear plastic case (for a soccer ball) I got at Hobby Lobby.
For the rocks I used model rail roading molds and hydrocal (light weight plaster). I also used model rail road scenery paint.
I built a balsa wood frame on the base (to hold the "planet"), and used Smooth Fill (a plaster used to make roads etc for model railroads) and spooned it in the base. I put some scenery paint in the Smooth Fill to give it a reddish tint to match the soil I would use.

Once I smoothed it out a bit, while still wet, I added the rocks in so they would "set" in the soil.

Also while wet, I added a reddish soil to the plaster.

After it dried, I used a paint brush to dust off the loose red soil leaving the rest embedded into the plaster with the rocks.

I just had to add the Space Pod and place the cover on. Now its safe from dust and touching fingers!

I have similar plans in mind for my "in progress" Chariot.
