View Full Version : Lake Speed...your kiddin' right?
69Stang 08-09-2009, 12:08 PM Nope...I was a HUGE fan! Several old customs I did recreating rides that were never released in 1:64. Though It would be fun to post and see if thier were any other Speed fans out there.
My claim to diecast fan...I was once known to have the largest Lake Speed diecast collection in the world:freak::p Yep...so I have that going for me when I die!:p

CJTORINO 08-09-2009, 03:51 PM thats cool.
I'll have to look thru my steamer trunk full of NASCAR stuff and see if I have any old Lake Speed cars, I might.
I do have a 1/24 scale model of a Dick Trickle Buick NASCAR I should get out and build.
casper60 08-09-2009, 03:53 PM Thats ok, my buddy has a Rick Wilson collection... talk about obscure. LOL
the thing i remember most of lake speed was the car that never was. when racing champs made the u. of nebraska car. what a scramble. for what you paid.....that car sold as good in porportion on the secondary market as many jeff gordon or dale earnhardt cars. i remember someone gave me $120.00 for an 8.99 nebraska 1/24 car, as i walked out of k-mart with it way back in like 1997.
hothardincoguy 08-09-2009, 09:57 PM HAHA kwik... funny thing now is you probably couldn't even get $8.99 out of that car....... Talk bout a mark-up on NASCAR back in the day..... Those days are longgggg gone now!!!! Randall
i had 8 1/24 and 4 1/64. sold them all at the peak time, as soon as i found them in the 97 year.. did very well.
smoke14 08-19-2009, 01:42 PM Extremely nice Lake Speed collection 'stag! I think the Buick Uno in the 1st pic is priceless  I've never seen one like it with that detail.
Who made it??
Craig
69Stang 08-19-2009, 11:17 PM Thanks Craig, the casting was by Action and the rest is by me. I think this was the Allison Miller car (If I remember right) some of the decals are home mode, the others are from a MDC 1:64 kit.
canadiancat 08-21-2009, 02:57 AM Wow those are superb
I seem to reconize your name?? if I may ask are you part of MCCH and in the Vancouver area?
by the way you mised one the 15 car he drove in 94 specififacally I reall he finished 15 or sommething in the inagural Brickyard race coming from near the back of the pack
MudSlinger 08-26-2009, 12:46 PM Those look great Ward, nice work!
I actually have a, 8x10 photograph of his spam car I took at Daytona autographed by him. I also still have a few of his die cast cars stored away.
69Stang 08-26-2009, 10:19 PM Hey Canadiancat, thanks for looking in on the thread. Sorry, I am not THAT 69Stang, as I am not even sure what MCCH means. But with that name, he sure sound like a great guy!!!
As for the missing #15, I have an anwser. Lake drove that car for Bud Moore in 7 starts for the 1993 season as the red Motorcraft T-Bird. This was after the departure of Geoff Bodine I belive.
He came back to run it the full 31 race season (now under the Quality Care banner) in 1994. And your right, Lake drove that race from a 41st starting place to a 15th place finish, even leading 5 laps in the process. A good run for sure. Lake finished 11th in points that year. After departing for the Harry Melling ride at seasons end, Bud hired Dick Trickle.
I did not show it because these were simply some of the 1:64 customs I had hanging out in my photobucket. But I have several of the factory versions of that car still in my collection so I never had to created a custom version. I even have a lot more custom versions of cars not produced, I really need to snap a few more pics! I never knew you guys would even look at a Lake Speed thread!
69Stang 08-30-2009, 09:10 PM Snapped a pic today of all my Speed cars it thier case. This is all I have left from a HUGH collection. Most are custom including the 1:24 Melling car and the 1:64 Spam transporter.
I just thought I would throw this pic in the tail of this thread. I have tons of printed matter left, but this is the cars together in thier case. Sorry for the pic quality, I was trying to shoot through the plexeglass front.

minicup64 08-30-2009, 10:21 PM Nice!! Collection! Look really nice.
MudSlinger 08-31-2009, 10:50 AM Nice! I love the display.
sschevyman1 09-02-2009, 01:15 PM Wow Ward, very nice!! Send me that Hoss ELLINGTON Buick#1. Hey Lake Speed drove car 17 Chevy with Yazoo Mowers as a sponsor. They both were from Miss. Lake drove the Bull Frog Knits Chevy car #1 as well. The #1 Buick was the famous team that ran Hawaiian Tropic sponsor for years with Buddy Baker, Donnie Allison, David Pearson and Kyle Petty. They were out of Wilmington,N.C. and when that team quit racing, several Key Members joined Morgan McClure racing Kodak #4 team.
69Stang 09-02-2009, 10:01 PM DUDE...You know your Speed!!! Yes, Lake drove the Yazoo Buick in 29 starts in 1982 for owner Roger Hamby. The UNO car morphed into the Bull Frog Knits Chevy by 1984 where he drove it for Hoss in 17 starts.
He also ran such sponsers as his own SPEED-KARTS (Lake is the only American to ever win a world Karting title) Sanyo, Hesco Mufflers as well as Butch Rahmoc's Nationwise Auto Parts Pontiac in '86 &'86.
And that just gets us up to the self owned era again, starting in 1987.
sschevyman1 09-03-2009, 11:40 AM That is right, I know because I lived it at the track!!!, Ahh the good old days!!!!!
69Stang 09-08-2009, 11:49 PM I KEEP FINDING THEM! OK, this one was right under my nose, less then 5 feet from my computer, but I had not thought about it. This is a custom of the transporter as it appeared in the red Melling (read that unsponsered) year! Right down to the close tandum Featherlite....

Shot through the plexi glass so it's a little rough, but it reminds me I need to update it a little. This is about 10 years old as well, and I see I put no marking or running lights at all! Need to spend a little time with this bad boy!
sschevyman1 09-09-2009, 01:52 PM Nice Ward. A note, Featherlite invented the split axle racing trailer and tested out the concept with Richard Childress Racing. Featherlite does not make the trailer type you show. The split axle is to better distribute the weight and the ride of the trailer and its load. Kentucky brand and Competition and Chaparral all make these close axle trailers as well as a version of the split axle trailers.

Cool, I learn something every day! Neat info to have:thumbsup:
sschevyman1 09-09-2009, 08:22 PM Keep up the great pics!!!

SPOOFY 09-18-2009, 11:05 AM Very cool cars, the only Lake Speed car I have is a Elite "Happy Birthday" car. I like that paint and because is for NASCARS birthday.
impcretux 10-09-2009, 10:56 PM uhm,Thanks so much 4 sharing with us,bros :-)
radams801 10-20-2009, 10:12 PM I have a Lake Speed ,(Woody Woodpecker)( Made by Revell), 2 car bank set from 1997. 1 car is 1/24 scale and is a bank, and the other is 1/64 in it,s own lil box. 1 of 1,002 sets. Gotta figure out how to take pics so i can show you guys!!
69Stang 10-25-2009, 08:10 AM If it is the '97 Revell, then it's most likley the blue #46 drivin by Wally Dallenbach. I don't recall Lake ever driving a "Woodie" car as it was not Cartoon Network based. But I would still like the see the photos very much. The Woody Monte Carlo was a nice looking car.
HobbyRI 10-26-2009, 11:17 AM I've always been a fan of Lake Speed, his World Karting Championship in 1978 was significent as he beat Ayrton Senna to get the title.
radams801 10-26-2009, 12:01 PM Stang, i stand corrected. It is a Wally Dallenbach bank set. I,m sorry for the mis info. I will try to get you some pic,s even tho it,s wally dallenbach. Russ Rusty_Adams@comcast.net:wave:
69Stang 10-26-2009, 11:18 PM Please do Russ, best I remember the "Woodie" car is pretty cool, would like to see it again.
And your right HobbyRI, you DO know your Speed! I think he is still the only American to have ever won a world Karting title. He is still racing Karts today!
radams801 11-01-2009, 07:19 PM Here you go Woody, enjoy. Russ

69Stang 11-02-2009, 07:27 AM How cool is that? It has a "mini me" version as well! Thanks for the photos Russ, being a Woody Woodpecker fan as a kid, I liked this car when it ran, and enjoied seeing it again here in your photos.
I dig the fact it was a bank, do they even still make those today in Nascar castings? Thanks again.
