When you are soldering a resistor onto an LED, what technique do you use?

For instance, do you cut the leg of the LED shorter? Do you line up the wire from the LED and resistor side by side and solder them together, or do you bend them into hooks--hook them together--then solder that joint? Perhaps you do something totally different?

Pictures would be helpful...

I am soldering resistors and LEDs and appear to be successful, but I can't shake the feeling that I'm not really doing it right. Don't get me wrong--all of them work and none of the joints have failed (yet)--but I'd love to see a step-by-step set of pics by somehow who really knows what they are doing.

I cut them shorter, but I think I read somewhere to leave like 8mm of wire on either side of both the resistor and the LED. I have notice on the LED's a little flat spot on the wires, and I cut just below it. Like you said, they all seem to work just fine. I put my reisitors inline on the positive side as well, if they aren't on a board. (This is why I like the VoodooFX stuff, the boards make it so much simpler) It's not like they burn 24/7 anyways, most of my kits are never lit for more than maybe 15 minutes at a time. I guess if you were at a contest you might leave them lit longer periods....

I roll the leg of the resistor around a needle to make a coil. I then slide it over the positive (doesn't really matter which one actually) leg of the LED and solder. This way I end up with a straight joint that can never come loose or break.

Here is a pic:

Thanks, Timothy. I will give that technique a try.

I've found Helping Hands to be quite useful to hold the LED and resistor in place touching each other while I apply solder:

Agreed - Helping Hands was the best $12 I ever spent.
When soldering, I put the resistor in one end of the clips and the wire in the other end.
A few seconds pfaffing about with lining them up so that the resistor is meeting the exposed end of the wire and the enjoyment of soldering successfully returns.

Once I've finished soldering I always use a short piece of PVC electrical tape and feed it between the legs before folding it around one leg then both. This prevents any possible shorts once the LED's are installed.
