View Full Version : SWTour Goes Ballistic!!
swtour 08-01-2009, 02:54 AM http://www.southwesttour.com/images/SWT_goes_ballistic2.jpg
Starting in September the South-West Tour Series will be allowing the NEW Novak Ballistic Spec Motors in our "Expert" classes.
The current plan is to continue using the SS Pro motors in our Sportsman Classes the remainder of this season, but the Expert group will be allowed to make the change now.
I am hoping to have one of the motors available for close inspection and display at the Encino Velodrome on August 15th.
I am excited to see how these motors work out for the racers, I think they are going to be quite popular.
THANK YOU NOVAK for your continued support!
NovakTwo 08-01-2009, 01:17 PM We here at Novak are excited about SWTour's transition to the Ballistic Spec motor platform in his Expert classes and we are proud of our sponsorship of the upcoming SWTour season. We will be working with Joe and supplying him with a 21.5 motor to disassemble and show to his members.
Keep in mind, the new Ballistic motors do not offer a performance advantage: they are, after all, "Spec" motors. The new Ballistic features are primarily in the replaceable sensor harnesses, timing adjustments and ease of repairability (rebuildability).
We also like the placement of the motor sensor harness socket, which we believe will put less stress on the connection. Many of the earlier Velociti/SS Pro replacement parts are still useable in the Ballistic--rotors, heat sinks, colored sleeves, cooling kits, fans, etc.
thirdplace 08-01-2009, 08:55 PM Sure is a gool looking motor.
swtour 08-02-2009, 02:17 PM LOL Richard,
That's because those are YOUR COLORS!!!
That Black and Orange will look good under a Orange and Black body!!
tfrahm 08-06-2009, 11:41 PM I love the idea of the changable stators... one motor plus $30 becomes two different motors... Huge savings over the long haul... Mine is on backorder, just waiting.... sigh...
swtour 08-17-2009, 11:41 PM We had the 21.5 Ballastic Motor opened up and torn down for the racers viewing pleasure Saturday, and what a nicely done motor.
The replacable Stator, with it's color coded section will make TECH id simple, the disassembly and reassembly is simple and clean, and the timing adjustment is also simple.
The NEW location of the solder tabs may be an issue for some upper pod plates, They've been moved what appears to be about 3/16 closer to the center of the motor, but that will be something easily adapted.
It's nice to have a replaceable sensor harness now, and it makes is easy for guys to use a really short one with the ESC mounted on the LR corner of the cars.
GARY HAMILTON also got the opportunity to run his (along with a few other "Expert 21.5" drivers.)
HAMILTON SHATTERED the Encino Velodrome record by nearly a FULL lap, running a 30/5:07 and change...with a FAST LAP of 9.67 (which equals approx 57 mph on our 820 ft. track)
Nice Gary,i'm sure it was car not motor..
swtour 08-18-2009, 11:06 AM Kevin,
I would say it was 90% car + being able to duplicate numbers on BLACKBURNS dyno makes tuning multiple cars freakin AWESOME.
Gary did build a new car after working with NIC -- I'll have a couple pics posted of it on the SWT site later in the week.
(BTW - he would have equalled the record run w/ a SSPro motor - but he got bumped into a slippery spot, spun and lost a lap...)
What's the date next month still the 12th? truck is 17.5 2 inch spoiler 38oz
swtour 08-18-2009, 07:34 PM Kevin,
Still trying to get the LINDSAY approval on the date. Last contact (yesterday) said they had a VERBAL "OK" but still waiting for the rental contract to be signed.
(I HATE having to wait so long for date approval!!)
~~(waving) Hey RON!

swtour 08-21-2009, 08:44 PM Ray, Kevin...and ALL Others!!
We have secured the Sept. 12th date for our next CARPET OVAL day @ Lindsay.
Thank you for your patience, we've got several "middle men" with this deal, we have to get things cleared past all of them.
Also, for those of you who haven't yet seen the NEW Novak Ballistic Motor - HERE is one all torn down!!
p.s. Kevin, Yes to all the above on the NASTRUCK class

Racin'Jason 8 08-21-2009, 09:28 PM Nice!
Looks like Mike and I are coming down
swtour 08-23-2009, 08:09 PM Kevin
Good deal!
(Hey, if you can rustle up the guys to run 17.5 - we can run it!!
Maybe Big B, John Card, don't know but maybe Humpty and KC...)
I'd like to have at least 6-8 cars (8 would give 2 heats and a full main)
expert 21.5 for sure,was thinking about bringing a 17.5 truck possibly,not 100%
swtour 08-27-2009, 06:39 PM It's shapin up to be a GOOD crowd, I wish I could talk some of the other SOUTHERN guys into going up (It's not nearly as far as they THINK it is!!
From LAX (Los Angeles International Airport) to LINDSAY is just under 180 miles. (It's over 200 for me)
Most of the trip from LA is up the I-5 and 99 Fwys, so speeds are fast. (It's less than 3 hours for most)
Tehachapi Flash 08-31-2009, 05:47 PM Hey Joe,
Are any of the VTA or Dirt Oval cars signed up for any of the support classes? Thanks, Ron

7 Hours for us

swtour 08-31-2009, 06:22 PM Hey Joe,
Are any of the VTA or Dirt Oval cars signed up for any of the support classes? Thanks, Ron
Hi Ron,
Not that I know of...
Did you sell off your Pan Car stuff?
...we may be able to come up with a 'Rent a Ride' for you... We'd love to see you there!!
swtour 08-31-2009, 07:01 PM ....with the NEW "Ballistic" Line, I'm hoping to see if the experimental 25.5 motors we tested a while back would be easier to build in a BALLISTIC style stator...
THAT might be a way for us to find our slower class w/o having to make the change to the low voltage lipo cells... it WOULD be much cheaper!!
We have tall enough gear selections to run that option now too (where when we tested we simply ran OUT of gearing! )
FLYINGFINN#8 08-31-2009, 08:45 PM Ballistic motor $92.00 vs TP single cell $65.00:confused:
GearboxGraphics 08-31-2009, 09:14 PM Ballistic motor $92.00 vs TP single cell $65.00:confused:
Actually, in the long run, Joe is right. Figure up a $65 battery (you really should get 2) a receiver pack or booster, and then either a new motor or a stator for the ballistic spec.
That works out west for Joe and the SWTour. On the east coast that would not work quite as well, as most are transitioning over to 1s now. Sooner or later, the SWTour will have to do it as well, but for now, they have a pretty cool thing going. If it works, do it!
swtour 08-31-2009, 10:32 PM GearBox is correct,
(believe me, I look at numbers from every angle)
To go ONE cell - (which guys don't have) will cost several of OUR racers
a NEW PACK (or more)
a NEW CHARGER (cause a lot of the guys don't have a LIPO charger that would charge @ 3.7 volts) ...including the THREE chargers I have (that will only do 2s packs) but BELIEVE me, if that were the only issue I had, it would be easy to build a SERIES Charging harness and charge 2 packs at once....through the balancer)
Plus any other "unknowns" --
I am not focused on SINGLE CELL(3.7v), and won't be in the near future (2009 - 2010)
With the BALLISTIC MOTOR, you will be able to have a box full of Stators, so if you want to run 25.5, 21.5, 17.5, 13.5, 7.5, etc... you just need a stator to get the job done!~ SWEET!
I'll bet, the average SWT racer next year has his Ballistic Motor, and at least 2-3 "Spare" stators...just because he can!
I really don't believe we'll get a 25.5 class going either, because a lot of the guys (Read MOST) are comfortable w/ 21.5 speeds) But, I do like OPTIONS that fit within OUR (read MY) plans for our series...
PS - Finn, with current series sponsor contracts in place - the TP battery is an option but more than likely not one I'll pursue!! :)
FLYINGFINN#8 09-01-2009, 05:29 PM I've been racing 1c since January and its made budget a lot better. You guys have a good set-up for your big tracks. But small track around my area can't handle 21.5/2s. So the single cell has made a difference.
swtour 09-01-2009, 08:37 PM Finn,
I have no doubt the 1c works great on the tiny tracks....and it may work great on the bigger tracks -
swtour 09-14-2009, 01:48 AM The 21.5 Ballistic Motors hit the RUG in Lindsay - and THESE Motors put the GTB Speedo right back in the game!
With the adjustable timing of the motor, it was possible to duplicate a rollout equal to that with other brand ESC's with their timing modes.
It was great to see the competition in the EXPERT class this weekend -
Petitclerc
Humpty
Hamilton
Steenhoven
Collins
Ruby
Hastings
Brust
Blackburn
McCoy
Chambliss
Cathey
Blaser
ALL Layed down some good laps!

swtour 09-14-2009, 10:19 AM Richard,
I'm not sure, I'd have to ask the Tech Guys, but it sounded like in the pits that pretty much ALL the expert guys had the new motors.
