View Full Version : Question's On Starting In 1/4 Scale

How Long Do Tires Last(pavement) And Do You Need A Tire Truer To Run 1/4 Scale? Also, Do You Need A Set Of Scales And If So Who Carries Them? I've Read That The Chassis Will Last A While, What About The Engines And Bodies? Also Wondering About Durability Of Bolt On Parts. Do You Need A Complete Set Of Front End Parts On Hand Or Are They Durabile Enough To Last Through Minor Crashes? I Know It Cost More For Start Up, What About Average Maintanence?
I Know It's Alot Of Questions( Most Which Have Probable Been Asked Already), But My Brother In Law And I Are Seriously Looking To Go 1/4 Scale If It Proves Not To Be Only For Those With Deep Pockets.

Thanks

With a good handling car tires last a long time, I have never seen a truer for tires but that's not to say someone doesn't use one. Scales are not needed and expensive, a better tuning tool is a temp gun for your tires. Motors last a long long time, bodies well that depends on driving skills and who you race with. These car are very strong, most times I find bent hiem joints after hitting a wall. Maiintanence is a weekly job if you want a compeitive car on a weekly basis.

Depends on the track surface. Usually you get at least one full season on left side tires. I go through about two RF tires a season. I get about 5 to 8 race days on a RR. One thing "I" do is buy all my RR tires at 18.5 (new), I change my stagger with my LR only (it's cheaper). Buy a temp gun to check tires.

No, I personally don't use scales (Not needed)......Yes, Chassis last a while, but will bend with a extremely hard impact. There are 5 yr old (or older) chassis that are still very competitive today. Most racers run one body all season. Engines are very inexpensive to rebuild (top end kit is like $60 bucks), most run all season on the same motor, just freshin it up with a new piston ring about mid season or so.

Front end parts that get damaged in minor crashes are rod ends. There are only two sizes needed, they are about 3 bucks (or so) each. I get mine from here (Free shipping to all current QSAC members) http://www.racingrodends.com

Average maintenance is almost nothing if you don't crash! - I Clean the air filter, blow the track dust off it, check ride heights, toe and such. It's fairly simple.
Also, Deep pockets WILL NOT buy you a win in 1/4 scale!!

I can usaully get a full season or more out of a set of tires......I have never trued them but I know of some people that do. Still running my first engine from 2005 it is my fastest. maybe just a ring and gaskets every now and again... Bodies now that is a tough one. (keep alot of shoe goo and gray tape on hand) as for front end parts keep a handful of heim's joints in stock. I raced 10th scale (all types) and after the initial expence of purchasing your 1/4 scale the cost of maintenance, to me is alot less to be competitive in 1/4 scale than it is in 1/10 scale. (goodbye batteries, goodbye motors, and so long tires every week or two)
Just my opinion.....

Takes me 5 hrs to drive to Algona to Race. What class are you planning on to run? The guys who race their work real hard on putting on a good local show. Cornbelt Series brings in the most guys for the weekend races. If you need tires or parts you can look me up at the trailer.

Go to the QSAC.org, lists most of the MFG's of cars, all are good.
I run a Pro1 car... need to use 1/4 scale servo's.

your questions are good but hard to answer
thanks for checking in, New racers all always welcome.

Opinions are like buttholes everyone has one...they are all good, you need to figure out what works best for you and what your likes and dislikes are with the different manufactures rides, and what kind of support you have for it at the track you will be running at!

niether has any of the 3 i use , but i aint trying to steer the guys to one of those cause thats what i like. If we want these new guys to get involved and stay involved, they need to make the right decision the first time out the gate, other wise thier pissed cause they bought the wrong car for them and the thing is up forsale 2 months later!
just my 2 cents on the deal

DBDROTTZ , myself and a buddy just made the change over to 1/4 after racing 1/10 and 1/8 off road for 25 years . These cars are really fun , cheaper to get into , and less maintenance cost . Along with they are much more fun to drive . I think you will like it .

the best advice i can give you is to go to the next race at Algona and check out all the different types of cars there and ask all the questions you can about each type, get the good and the bad that each owner will tell you, i have owned 3 different types of sprintcar and there were things i loved and hated about each of them. Gather all the info you can and make a decision on whats best for your situation or budget. You may even find a used one for sale there. Hope this helps, if not shoot me a PM and ask me anything else you would like to know.

QSAC is a club that you are a member of right? try looking out for them as well, the two go hand in hand Will, one without the other dont work, BIG PICTURE. we need members, manufactures, and track owners to make it all work and grow.

besides i take care of you...who has put the clothes on your back at the last 2 NCS races....thats right yours truely!!!

Hey DBDROTTZ:

I haved raced at Ft. Dodge and Algona for the passed 5 years, my son has been racing 1/4 scales for 3 also, We live in Cedar Rapids and its a little over 3 hrs to Algona for me so your drive would be a drive across town but the drive will be worth it. To answer some of your questions, it seems WCM is the most popular car at those two tracks, there are a couple Pro 1 and others but WCM seems to be the biggy, my chassis is an old truck chassis so I believe its around 8 years old and it got 3rd last weekend at Algona. The stock cars also seems to be the biggest class, Algona has a great following of Spotsmen where Ft. Dodge has Grand National. There are Sprints but that class is not as big as the stock cars but does seem to be growing.

As for tires, when you get the car set and the tires will last for a long time, its not unheard of for tires to last the whole season. Bodies, most guys run them for a year or 2, I just changed mine after 4 years. I am still running the same motor that came with the car 5 years ago. Like everyone else has said, these cars are strong, I have seen some crazy wrecks and the cars all drive away, the weakest part of the cars are the heim joints, if you have a hand full of them you will probably make it through a few weeks of racing.

Glad to hear your looking at the 1/4, I have raced and still do race electric 1/10 scales for over 15 years, my son has race electrics for 9 years and me and my son both agree the the 1/4 scale cars are the funnest.

Come on out to ALgona next Saturday Aug. 8th. THe track opens around 1:00, racing starts at 5:00, we will be there until 9:30 or so. Ft. Dodge races on sun the 9th, they start at 1:00 and will be there until 4 or so. Its free to watch and bring your friends, then you can share the cost of gas every weekend to go racing :). Stop on by my pit, I have the 01 car and also the #5 car. Say hi and I will show you the cars.

Thanks Everyone, Would Love To Make It To Kansas This Weekend, But There Is Also A Surgery Happening In My Household( Onlike My Brother In Law, Not Me , It's My Puppy). I've Got Both Ft. Dodge And Algona Schedule And We Are Planning A Trip Up There. We Are Also Planning To Make The Knoxville Race During The Nationals.i've Seen The 1/4 Scale Sprints Run Many Years Ago At Vets In Des Moines. Can't Hardly Wait To See Them Run Again. I race a Pro1 sprint. I love it. It works great on both dirt and pavement, I have won races on both surfaces w/it...Very stable car.....I have also been beat by all the mfgs too. :)

Bottom line, Buy what "you" like or you will never be happy.

they are both WCM, as for the looks we took alot of time on the panels and wings to make them look as close to real 410 dirt sprints as we could

right now we are running on the same nights as the karts until car count gets to big and we are starting at 7pm while it is hot...normally Saturday night we do a few on Sunday we will be at the Nationals this weekend so our next night should be 8-15 unless something comes up

our web site is www.coodycreekspeedway.com it is the kart site with a link to the r/c page and has a forum so join in the more the better
