The last movie I tried to watch in 3-D was Shark Boy and Lava Girl. After a few minutes of the 3-D and not being able to see it, I left.

Are the movies in 3-D out this year using a different kind of 3-D?

I really need to have my glasses on for far off seeing, will that help to see in 3-D?

Since you have to pay for the 3-D glasses, can you keep them to use to see another movie in the future, or are the glasses different per movie? I noticed a recycle bin for the glasses.

Is the 3-D better than the version on DVD of the movies?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

My experience is that the new polarized theater glasses work much better than the ol' red/green glasses most 3-D DVD's use. The 3-D is much more "real" looking, as for glasses, I just put the polarized ones on over my glasses. Sure, it looks dorky, but it works just fine.

I can see the 3-D effect easily no matter what system is being used. I wear glasses, so I put the special 3-D ones over them as Philip mentioned. So far, I've always been satisfied with all of the 3-D effects in the movies. I've seen all sorts of films: from The Creature from the Black Lagoon to House of Wax.....from Comin' at Ya to Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert in 3D.....Friday the 13th Part 3 to Journey to the Center of the Earth......even Captain Eo to Jim Henson's Muppet*Vision 4-D!

it varies from film to film and from theatre to theatre (quality and placement of the projection systems).

for best results, arrive early and stake out seats dead center in the auditorium.

as to keeping the specs, again, varies from film to film. as each pair of "nightmare before xmas" came in a sealed bag, you were clearly meant to keep them. at the imax however, ushers handed you your glasses on the way in, and reclaimed them on your way out.

Thanks for your help! As more movies are coming out in 3-D, I didn't want to limited on what I watched.

LLoyd,

Do yourself a favor and see "Up" in 3-d before it leaves the theatres

It was ASTOUNDING! very well done and there were no jokey "rollercoaster" shots or "throwing things at the camera" shots.

LLoyd,

Do yourself a favor and see "Up" in 3-d before it leaves the theatresI'll second that. We rarely get to go to the theater these days, but the yearly Pixar movie is an exception. Plus, I knew we'll get it on Blu-ray and be able to see it in 2D as many times as we wanted when that time comes (November, I believe), so I really wanted to see it in 3D. I wasn't disappointed.

FYI -- most if not all of the new crop of 3D theatrical movies use glasses with circular-polarized lenses. These are even better than the linear polarizers found in modern theme park 3D movies/attractions, in my experience.

Thats good to hear. One of my biggest complaints about 3-D films was that they were way too 'gimmicky'.
I'll have to try to see Up this weekend before it leaves the theater.

What these fella's said! "Up" is an excellent movie with plenty of grown-up humor thrown in. I really enjoyed the heck out of it in 3D, as well. The glasses we were given came in a purty plastic wrap and we were expected to turn them in after the movie. I spoke to the manager about it and he said they take the time to wipe the glasses down, then seal them in a new bag between viewings.

The trailer to UP was very funny, but the 3-D got in the way for me. But now if I can, I will watch it, after the above reviews.

The theater where I saw "Up" gave us the 3D glasses in a sealed plastic bag. They also had the turn-in bins outside the auditorium doors. They said we could either keep the glasses as a souvenir (save them for the next 3D movie) or put them in the turn-in bins where they would be sent back, cleaned and repackaged.

We went to go see "G-Force" last night with the Dutchess & this was our second 3-D film, the Dutchess' first. Still just as good as the first time! She loved it & it made good use of the 3-D effect without being overly "in yor face". The shots with the secret agent fly (yes, a bug) were fun & even just the over-the-shoulder talking two shots were interesting to look at.

The wife & I both wear glasses & we easily put the polarized lenses over our specs with no problem. And for extra fun this fall, IIRC, Toy Story 1 & 2 are both coming out in 3-D!

So is "Nosferatu", apparently. One of my video editors has explored this process and it is surprisingly effective.

Zorro - I mentioned the Nosferatu (or "Orlock the Vampire") 3-D project here:

We've been doing the same thing, playing in After Effects and Mocha to do some of our video in 3D - way cool stuff!!!
