Check out the Digital stuff, very cool! Heaps of vids on Utube. Wish you could get digital in HO scale!

I hear ya kiwi!!! Someday I hope the technology can get compact enough for it. When the Z scale trains can do it, I'm pretty sure we can too! It would be sick running 8 HO cars even on 4 tracks with lane changes!!!

The technology is already there and has been for quite a while, at least a decade or more. It's just a matter of getting a manufacturer to pony up the cash to bring a complete product to market, in a market that is small to begin with. If HO goes digital I would hope it is based on an open standard so you don't have to pick one brand. Any digital car should work on any digital track.
I don't hold out a lot of hope for digital HO and have no desire for it personally. It only adds complexity and the relative speed of the cars is such that providing smooth lane changing would be a big challenge. Not to mention the ability to put a nice scooping body on a fast car and simply clean the other cars out of a lane. What might work better for HO would be a redux of the slotless design where the cars are still powered from the track but the controllers are wireless. Whether it would be any more successful than prior slotless designs is open for speculation.
