View Full Version : Engines
dangerousdave 07-22-2009, 03:09 PM I have a question about the engines we are using, Do you as a racer feel that a "RACE PREPED" engine is a better engine or is a "BOX STOCK" engine just as good. By Race Preped I mean a engine that has been blueprinted to stock specs & box stock I mean just how it comes from the supplier.
I have both types of engines and really can't tell any difference at my local track.

Dave:
I would assume that to blueprint an engine to specs you may have to do some machining. If so this would make the engine unacceptable under QSAC rules. No adding or removal of material from the engine. There are engines out there that run like a cat with gas on it's but. I happen to have a strong motor right now and it has never had anything done to it. It's box stock as you would say. It gets better with time.

By blueprinting I mean a QSAC legal engine, Setting the timing to exact specs, ignition to exact specs, making sure there are no seal leaks, things like that.

willyplankhead 07-22-2009, 05:07 PM Some of these motors run great out of the box some don't everyone is diffrent any of these motors can be great just getting what each one wants or needs is the factor of being a great motor or paper weight
willyplankhead 07-22-2009, 05:11 PM And anything that is rough machined has no exact specs

i think you have answered your own question here, "cant tell the difference". personaly i dont think it is worth the money to have everything done you talked about by someone else. But what i would recomend is when you buy a new motor have it broken in the right way. every motor is diffewrent and needs to have the carb adjusted correctly and be geared for how it runs best. for example at your NCS race i ran a 15/79 gear on my sprint but everyone else was running a 14/76 to 80 on thiers. thats just what my motor worked best with, they are all different the trick is finding the sweet spot on each one of them!
Brent 07-22-2009, 05:54 PM diffewrent? You wascally wabbit! LOL!
Agreed.
willyplankhead 07-22-2009, 06:01 PM Hey mike I was running a 14/81 there brandon was running a 14/75 and we were close to each other he just had no luck in main

Ok. I understand. That I don't know. I just take them and run them.

fastscott18 07-22-2009, 08:26 PM It is important to have a correctly tuned and geared engine but after that, the differences are very small. I bet if you put 10 random engines in my car I would have a tough time telling you which is the best or trying to rank them from fastest to slowest. However, if you put 10 different tires on my car I am positive I could tell you which combination was the fastest and be pretty accurate on ranking them from fastest to slowest. That being said, its not all in the tires either. Everything matters; its the combination. But I would rank having a "fast engine" way down on my list.
DMP_SMOKE 07-22-2009, 08:35 PM hey scott how are you doing after the ncs race at MPR hopefully good, things were different after you left i know i could have kicked rogers ass with your car because im that good lol:thumbsup:
fastscott18 07-22-2009, 08:45 PM Hey Dave, feeling good, but still on crutches for a bit. BTW who said 1/4 scale racing wasn't dangerous...one little crash and I end up in the emergency room!
willyplankhead 07-22-2009, 08:48 PM Hey scott glad to see your sense of humor after that spill all of our thoughts and prayers have been with you

jeffdavis38 07-22-2009, 09:34 PM Dave,
The main thing is to make sure the engines don"t have any air leaks. All engines like to turn and produce HP at different RPM's. I like my engines to run from the center of the corner off so I gear my car for that and it makes the engine turn more than most guys engines. Some of the new engines you have to gear them taller because they seem to run better at a low RPM. I have a dyno sheet that I recieved from a engine builder that showed the same #'s all the way up until 13000 RPM between a box stock and a race preped engine. very little difference in the two. The box stock engine was better in a few spot's over the race preped engine. Me personally don't think its worth it unless you are having trouble with a engine and even then you can buy a new engine for what it will cost you to rebuild one most of the time.
Just my 2 cent.:thumbsup:I have a question about the engines we are using, Do you as a racer feel that a "RACE PREPED" engine is a better engine or is a "BOX STOCK" engine just as good. DMP_SMOKE 07-22-2009, 10:42 PM get ur mind out of the gutter:freak:
In the old days, the manufacturers would just take each engine from their shipment and put each one on a dyno. There are always freak engines in the batch. They kept those engines and put the "other" engines in the cars they sold.
