View Full Version : "Jada Oil Tanker - Fill & Drill"
CadillacPat 07-19-2009, 07:56 PM A little behind the scenes action of my Jada Oil Tanker Customs.
The Jada Oil Tanker comes with plenty of room for great graphics and smooth glasslike paint.
From the factory, unlike most Jada DieCast, this casting comes with an ordinary unappealing thick enamel paint job.
Removing this heavy layer of factory paint reveals a smooth clean metal with almost no imperfections.
A great canvas to work with.
Here's a factory shot showing the Tanker apparatus on the roof and the set of plastic headlights that sit on top of the fenders.
The only piece of chrome that gets removed and saved is the grille.

Stripped with KleanStrip AirCraft Remover the casting shows a deep recessed groove on the roof where the Tanker apparatus attached, holes in the fenders where the Headlights fastened, and two holes in front of the windshield where spotlights were connected.
All these holes get filled and sanded.

Here is the Primered casting (a very thin very smooth coat) after all holes are filled and sanded, and new holes for inlaid Rhinestone Headlights are drilled in the Fenders.
A rectangular hole is cut in the Hood for installation of a BoneShaker engine.

The first step in the painting process will be shooting the fenders and InterCoat Clearing them for taping purposes.
Tamiya Masking Tape will be used.

Dadvball 07-20-2009, 09:55 AM Pat, a couple of quick questions if I may. I haven't done much with two-tone themes yet. How soon do you remove the masking tape after shooting the next color? If you let it dry is it necessary to run a sharp exacto blade along the edge of the tape so as not to peel of any of the fresh paint?

Where yat DadVBall,
When I remove the tape is dependent upon how complex the layers are.
The HOK paints I use allow me to shoot a layer of almost negligible thickness so it doesn't really matter if I remove the tape immediately or after it dries.
If the tape is not necessary to protect a former layer of paint then I usually remove it immediately.
Hence the need for a strong, sturdy Paint Stand that grips your casting tightly while removing said tape..
Tamiya Masking Tape assists in this process by always leaving a clean line and offering little resistance during removal.
If you are using normal Enamels or Hobby Paints I would most surely try and remove the tape immediately or if dry then try and slice through any edge buildup by, like you said, using an X-Acto blade.

bob8748 07-21-2009, 12:12 AM Hey Pat, maybe a stupid question but here goes. Are you using a certain burnishing tool to get these lines? I've been using round toothpics but not getting the results I want. I havent had the clear coat spray either though.

Where yat Bob,
Good question!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I also burnish the Tamiya Masking Tape down with a round toothpick.
But, easy on the burnish.
I only rub down the lead edge, and only enough for good clean adhesion.
The rest of the tape is pressed down with my fingers, gently but firmly,
Tamiya Masking Tape is somewhat transluscent and will change color when it makes airtight contact with the underlying paint.
Also,
The paint layer is of importance here.
The layer of paint I put down is of negligible thickness and because of good body prep it is level throughout the area. No bumps or pits.
Tamiya Masking Tape used with InterCoat Clears will never pull up paint that has been applied over good and correct body prep.
It won't pull up paint even if you don't use Intercoat Clears.
That being so, yes, I could probably press down hard on the tape and still not pull up paint but, using my methods I don't need to.
As you can see in the pics, I sometimes am able to reuse tape that has already been painted over.
I have to stress that some other products will work sometimes, but the products that I write about will work EVERYTIME and they are inexpensive.
As far as the InterCoat Clear.
I have been waiting for all my AirBrush threads to take root in what looks like several guys here buying AirBrushes.
I plan another House Of Kolor Co-Op where I buy basic HOK products like Bases, Shimrin Pearls, Urethane Clear Topcoat, Hardeners and Reducer, all necessary ingredients, break them down in 2 oz. quantities and ship them out to all those who want to try great Automotive Paints without the cost of buying large quantities.
A cheap, at cost way for you guys to use the same paint I do and see if it improves your work.
That will be in another post,
But think about it,

bob8748 07-21-2009, 01:20 AM Thanks again. I ordered the Badger on June 28th, still waiting on arrival with all the patience of a boiling tea kettle...lol. A new toy is coming! (never seen one before). House of Kolor is in my "favorite places" along with Micro Marks and a few others. The paint looks expensive for a start up for many colors. But, once bought it should last a while? Got out last weekend and picked up a 12 pack of Sharpie's, a few spools of thread, and a boat load of Krazy glue. Decals are coming. I'm still playing!
CadillacPat 07-31-2009, 11:02 PM Really starting to take shape here.
The Fenders and Sides are taped off so the Hood can also be shot Red Pearl.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v483/CadillacPat/Jada%20Oil%20Tanker/PICT0015.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v483/CadillacPat/Jada%20Oil%20Tanker/PICT0016.jpg
Speeding up a couple of frames,
After the Hood is shot Red Pearl, all tape is removed and the whole thing gets covered in Candy Pink with a dose of Flamingo Pink Pearl Powder.
Quite a dramatic change takes place.
Zenith Gold covered with Candy Pink and Pink Pearl Powder has different colors dancing all over the place.
Purple covered with the same Candy Pink and Pink Pearl shifts from Purple, to Pink to Blue.
All Products Used Are Exclusively House Of Kolor, Of Course!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v483/CadillacPat/Jada%20Oil%20Tanker/PICT0007-1.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v483/CadillacPat/Jada%20Oil%20Tanker/PICT0006-2.jpg
Here it is mocked up with both a Chrome and Gold BoneShaker engine.
I use the same two engines for all test fits so they are a bit worn and dull.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v483/CadillacPat/Jada%20Oil%20Tanker/PICT0009-2.jpg
Next up Decals, Detail, Headlights, Taillights, Gold Foil trim tape, Overhead Rhinestone Lights, etc.
Then the Shell will get a light dose of Aztec Gold Pearl Powder and the whole thing will be ClearCoated.
Stay tuned,
