I picked up the Mattel Speed Racer battery powered HO set for $12.98 at Toys R Us tonight. Both cars with the HPx2 dual wheel base chassis. I'm not certain when the sale ends, perhaps this evening.

Thanks for the heads up... I thought about it but it just was not on the list of slot cars that I have to have right now... (Cut backs, you know...)
But again, thanks for watching out for the guys here at Hobby Talk...

I appreciated you heads up. I did not post a reply until I was able to check it out, which I did today. Unfortunately, the TRU in AZ are on life support. They have no slot cars in HO from any company. Their shelves are half empty. I see posts on this and other sites about Greenlight diecast, numerous cases of Johnny Lightnings, regular stocking of diecast and backstock. If you ask someone about restocking the shelves they look at you like you are nuts. The Phoenix area is over 3 mil and we have about 5 TRU stores. And because the vast majority of people here relocated, they have already disposed of their old slots and sets before they crossed the Mississippi. Garage sales here are slim pickins. Please keep the heads ups coming, you never know.

I've got four TRU stores here, but all of them have more clothes and strollers than toys. Haven't seen a slot set here for more than 2 or 3 years. Seems the powers that be at TRU are trying to shutout the car collectors. Even their diecast selection is small. I don't get it? I used to buy stuff from them all the time. I've been sitting on a $50 gift card for more than a year. Sad indeed :>(

Hope that gift card doesn't have an expiration on it!! Sadly, alot of them do.

i happened to be in our TRU yesterday (the one in Hagerstown, MD is closest to where I live) and they actually had a halfway decent selection of Carrera GO sets, but that was it for slots. i miss the days when they sold individual cars... I remember seeing HP2s and HP7s there. i also remember when they sold Rokar/Amrac cars, and I kinda recall seeing AFX Speed Steer and Tyco US/1 sets...
i actually just saw the Speed Racer movie the other night with the kids for the first time. i really liked it... good movie to have on in the slot car room...

I just haven't had the opportunity to check it out.
TRU is really low on my list of places to get slots. They might have the occasional Lifelike set, but that's it. And it's not like it's cheaper there than anywhere else.
I remember years ago stopping in TRU and getting some HO trains/cars at low prices and seeing all the slot cars and sets. Same with Kay Bee (I miss KB). However, that was during the time I wasn't paying attention to slots --- what an IDIOT!
They seem to be turning into less of a toy store and more for other things, like clothes, video games and videos.
But, it's always good info to have and thanks for letting us know.
