View Full Version : Famous last lines from the movies
Todd P. 07-09-2009, 04:00 PM I saw The Princess Bride yesterday. I've watched the movie at least a dozen times and love it; introduced my kids to it last year and they now count it as one of their favorites.
Movies that end with great lines are pretty rare, aren't they? Casablanca, a film just stuffed with terrific lines, is probably the most famous: "Louis, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship." Better than Scarlett O'Hara's "Tomorrow is another day" in Gone with the Wind.
But I think Peter Falk's delivery of "As you wish" at the end of Bride is my current favorite. What a terrific moment, from one of my favorite actors.
Carson Dyle 07-09-2009, 04:23 PM "Forget it, Jake... it's Chinatown."
“It was Beauty killed the Beast.”
"There's no place like home."
"Well, nobody's perfect."
“I do wish we could chat longer, but I'm having an old friend for dinner.”
IndyRC_Racer 07-09-2009, 04:31 PM I always liked the last lines to Back to the Future. If I recall it is:
"Roads? Where we're going we don't need roads."

MartinHatfield 07-09-2009, 04:47 PM "i'll...be...right here"
E.T.
I still get extremely blubbery at the end of that flick.
MartinHatfield 07-09-2009, 04:51 PM Another favorite from another "blubbery" movie for me...
"I'm home."
Sam
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
Such a simple yet effective ending to a movie trilogy that will drain the life right out of ya.
Zorro 07-09-2009, 04:52 PM "Nah, it's okay. I'm fine. Fine. I'm fine." - Five Easy Pieces
Steve CultTVman Iverson 07-09-2009, 05:04 PM "The End"
Magesblood 07-09-2009, 05:29 PM Too bad she won't live! But then again, who does?
This is Ripley, last survivor of the Nostromo, signing off.
“Where ya headed, cowboy?”
“Nowhere special.”
“Nowhere special. I always wanted to go there.”
“Come on.”
Alright Mr. Sulu. Let's see what she's got.
Can ya dig it?
Jim NCC1701A 07-09-2009, 06:00 PM Merrily merrily merrily merrily, life is but a dream.
Zorro 07-09-2009, 09:19 PM "Well, nobody's perfect."

Quite possibly the greatest punchline in cinema history. :p
Jim NCC1701A 07-10-2009, 06:27 AM Tonight a comedian died in New York.
razorwyre1 07-10-2009, 07:00 AM "he was the boogeyman!"
"as a matter of fact, he was."
John P 07-10-2009, 07:43 AM One of my favorites isn't even a line. It's the look Walter Matthau gives at the end of The taking of Pelham 123 (The original).
JeffG 07-10-2009, 08:08 AM Goodfellas: "Now go home and get your $%^&*#* shinebox!"
Waterworld: "Was this part of your big vision?"
Dirty Harry: "Hey...I gots to know!"
The Good, The Bad and The Ugly: "If your gonna shoot, shoot. Don't talk!"
Forrest Gump: "I gotta find Bubba!"
The Three Stooges: "I come from a long line of dancers. My father died dancing...at the end of a rope!"
Not really last lines, but good ones!
Eric K 07-10-2009, 08:46 AM Aren't those more like opening lines or middle lines?
JeffG 07-10-2009, 08:50 AM Yes. Which I mentioned. Just thought I'd throw those in since the best lines from films are rarely the last ones.
sbaxter 07-10-2009, 10:43 AM Well, it's definitely a "you had to be there" moment, because it isn't really the line so much as the context ...
"Kitty!"

Todd P. 07-10-2009, 04:52 PM Given that I have hated just about every cross-dressing comedy I've ever seen, I have avoided viewing Some Like it Hot despite its inclusion on so many "best ever" movie lists. However, I went hunting YouTube for that last scene and did indeed get a kick out of it. Perhaps it's time to end my boycott.
Carson Dyle 07-10-2009, 05:25 PM Given that I have hated just about every cross-dressing comedy I've ever seen, I have avoided viewing Some Like it Hot...
Oh c'mon, how can you hate "Tootsie?"
And "Some Like It Hot" is a comedic masterpiece. Do yourself a favor and give it a look.
Billy Wilder had a knack for good last lines...
"All right, Mr. DeMille, I'm ready for my close-up." (Sunset Blvd.)
"Shut up and deal." (The Apartment)
I also like...
"Why, she wouldn't hurt a fly!" (Psycho)
“I used to be afraid of the water… I can’t imagine why.” (Jaws)
"Now... where was I?" (Momento)
“The way of the future… the way of the future…the way of The Future.” (The Aviator)
“Hey, Stella! Hey, Stella!” (A Streetcar Named Desire)
Eric K 07-10-2009, 06:11 PM Yes. Which I mentioned. Just thought I'd throw those in since the best lines from films are rarely the last ones.
Yeah...In an edit after I mentioned it :jest:
Todd P. 07-10-2009, 06:16 PM Tootsie! Aha, there is a cross-dressing comedy I enjoyed. Haven't seen it in so long I forgot. Too bad that there are 17 Mrs. Doubtfires and White Chicks for every Some Like it Hot. But I guess that's true of every genre.
Griffworks 07-10-2009, 11:11 PM Barbara: They're us. We're them and they're us.
Night of the Living Dead (1990)

Francine Parker: Not much.
Peter: All right.
Dawn of the Dead (1978)

MacReady: Why don't we just wait here for a little while... see what happens...
John Carpenter's The Thing
Jack Burton: Just remember what ol' Jack Burton does when the earth quakes, and the poison arrows fall from the sky, and the pillars of Heaven shake. Yeah, Jack Burton just looks that big ol' storm right square in the eye and he says, "Give me your best shot, pal. I can take it."
Big Trouble In Little China
Will Munny: You better bury Ned right!... Better not cut up, nor otherwise harm no whores... or I'll come back and kill every one of you sons of -----.

No, actually he edited it 31 minutes before you posted. ;)
scotpens 07-10-2009, 11:29 PM "Which shall it be, Passworthy? Which shall it be?"
"Keep watching the skies!"
"Soylent Green is PEOPLE!!"
These are a bit obscure:
"We're going to put everyone over 10 out of business."
"Of course the operation was a success — or you wouldn't be here!"
Eric K 07-10-2009, 11:38 PM No, actually he edited it 31 minutes before you posted. ;)
Ok...I went back and posted without reading the edit. I saw it and thought it was strange. But, went back later....yeah...that's the ticket and, I've gotta go...Morgan Fairchild is waiting on me.
El Gato 07-11-2009, 12:41 AM "I'm coming for you" from The Matrix.
I forgot the lines, but the ones at the end of The Terminator and T2 were pretty good also.

"Hey Everybody! We're all gonna get laid!!"
[sometimes changed on TV to " we're all gonna have a shower!"]
scotpens 07-11-2009, 11:19 PM "Hello, everybody. This is Mrs. Norman Maine."

JGG1701 07-12-2009, 12:31 PM "God damn you... Oh, God damn you all to hell!"
Good one! Don't know how I managed to forget that one!
Very disturbing ending.
Todd P. 07-13-2009, 01:13 AM Peter: How much fuel do we have?
Francine Parker: Not much.
Peter: All right.
Dawn of the Dead (1978)
Loved that ending. Funny and scary. Reminds me of another great last line, from the original Night of the Living Dead: "That's another one for the fire."
SteveR 07-13-2009, 02:40 AM "I hope I can make it across the border. I hope to see my friend, and shake his hand. I hope the Pacific is as blue as it has been in my dreams. I hope."
JeffG 07-13-2009, 10:05 AM Quantum Of Solace: 'I never left.'
terryr 07-13-2009, 07:10 PM "What is it? The stuff that dreams are made of."
BluntFronts 07-13-2009, 07:44 PM two more for the ages:
"Remember, if your principal gives you trouble, and you want this to happen at your school, you just give ol' Screamin' Steve a call. I'm in the book - under SCAAAA-RRRREAMIN'!!!"
and
Blood: "Well, I'd certainly say she had marvelous judgment, Albert, if not particularly good taste."
Carson Dyle 07-13-2009, 08:20 PM "Well, I'd certainly say she had marvelous judgment, Albert, if not particularly good taste."
Harlan Ellison despised that line.
Seaview 07-13-2009, 08:26 PM "I'm having an old friend for dinner".
Carson Dyle 07-13-2009, 08:28 PM "I'm having an old friend for dinner" (otherwise the double-entendre doesn't work).
PhilipMarlowe 07-14-2009, 08:44 AM Harlan Ellison despised that line.
Yeah, but it works well in the movie. BTW, "A Boy and His Dog" are available for free on Itunes from the "Cult of UHF" podcast.
Scorpitat 07-14-2009, 05:04 PM My favorite opening line - "MY GOD! It's full of stars!"
And my fav line of all, in a movie. Jeff Goldblum, Independence Day. -
"Fat Lady! You're obsessed with Fat lady! Just fly us outta here!"
hehehe. I LOVE that line.
Sincerely,
Scorp.
"Boldly GO!"
BluntFronts 07-15-2009, 01:04 PM cool ones.
Goldblum has my favorite line in Annie Hall too...on the phone in the middle of the music producer's party:
"I forgot my mantra."
(Well, I guess you had to be there!)
BluntFronts 07-15-2009, 01:08 PM Harlan Ellison despised that line.
I don't doubt that. I enjoy a lot of his work, and he was a fantastic guest on Tom Snyder's show in the '90s (I can't believe how much I miss Tom Snyder as a talkshow host; just consider who's on now), but anything that sets off Harlan Ellison can't be all bad! He's one of those folks that it's kind of fun to annoy.
Carson Dyle 07-15-2009, 03:58 PM I...anything that sets off Harlan Ellison can't be all bad!
Agreed.
One of the (many) reasons Ellison hated Star Wars was the fact that he could hear the sound of the spacecraft engines in the vacuum of space. Given longstanding motion-picture storytelling conventions of this type I find it astonishing (not to mention annoying) that Ellison couldn't suspend his disbelief.
Presumably it didn't bother him that the sounds of a symphonic orchestra wouldn't travel in space either, lol.
Lou Dalmaso 07-16-2009, 07:37 AM My favorite opening line - "MY GOD! It's full of stars!"
And my fav line of all, in a movie. Jeff Goldblum, Independence Day. -
"Fat Lady! You're obsessed with Fat lady! Just fly us outta here!"
hehehe. I LOVE that line.

"Boldly GO!"
Its a fine line, but technically, the last line of ID4 was "Didn't I promise you fireworks?"
My fave line of that film was. "Hello Boys, I'm Baaaack"
