View Full Version : What Portable Generator?
speeddaddy 07-02-2009, 11:57 AM I want to get a portable generator to take to off road outside events that have no power. Just wondering what you guys are using? I want to power maybe 3 chargers ,2 lights and maybe a soldering iron (without chargers running) I don't want to pay a lot (like Honda) because this will only be used for RC racing ( I have a big generator at home that runs my hole house). Any suggestions will be appreciated

Go down to B&G Discounts in Schoolcraft and pick up one of their generators. Plenty powerfull and not expensive!
hankster 07-02-2009, 05:26 PM While the Honda may seem expensive to start, it could easily pay for itself. Example is my Yamaha 2300watt (more then what you need I know) runs 14+ hours on a 1.6 gal. tank of gas. I would suggest getting one of the cheap throw away units if you don't plan on getting a good inverter generator. Watch for sales. Menards had a 1000 watt generator for $100 a couple of weeks ago. HF also has some.

I have one like that mine is a two stroke so I have to mix the gas and oil but it work great I use mine for two chargers and a light and a radio too I have seen a lot of them at the races this year
Jerzferno 07-04-2009, 09:18 AM Home Depot has an on line special for a 3000 watt generator for $199, and a 4000 watt for $299.
TOYMINATOR 07-08-2009, 10:12 PM I have a used 2200 watt Honda $325 I am 35 min north of Grand Rapids. toyminator@charter.net for pics.
HEFFAE 07-09-2009, 03:13 PM Meijer has one on sale for $99.00, (plus another $15.00 off if you're a senior citizen this week). It sells normaly for $150.00, it's a 1000 watt, two stroke, runs two LiPo chargers, fan & light for 9 hours using two gallons. I'm only using this for RC also (1/8 scale stuff so far) and don't need one that will last 20 years as I'm sure I won't be able to see the pipes (not to mention my buggy or truggy) when I'm that old.
never-gro-up 07-10-2009, 05:26 AM honda is the only way
Loony 07-11-2009, 08:48 PM honda is the only way
Honda is nice but damn it's 1200.00...
hankster 07-12-2009, 01:13 PM The 1000w Honda can be had for $800. My Yamaha 2300w runs 14 hours on 1.6 gal. of gas and is so quiet (53db compared to 68db) you can barely hear it run (quiet as the Honda). Stop by at the next race and listen to it. You pays for what you gets :)
speeddaddy 07-15-2009, 09:45 AM Thanks for all the help everybody:thumbsup:
airconde 07-15-2009, 03:21 PM Hey Hank if you still have that WS7 and JP2 bring it to StateLine with you R Kruse whants it. Thanks
hankster 07-15-2009, 05:14 PM I still have it and I'll bring it.
airconde 07-16-2009, 10:08 AM Cool see you their,
T Tom 07-18-2009, 10:16 AM 1000 watt for $100 makes a lot of short term sense. this can be had at plenty of places when on sale. mine will even power a small electric air compressor, but make sure that the generator has enough starting watts to handle compressor.

I have had my 1000 watt for 6 years with no porblems at all runs my light two chargers and a radio:thumbsup:
kra2y 07-23-2009, 10:57 PM how loud are those 1000w cheapies? ive thought about getting one.
sbrady#0 07-24-2009, 09:50 AM how loud are those 1000w cheapies? ive thought about getting one.
not loud at all I use a 25 foot cord and you can hear it but it not so loud you have to yell to talk some people dont even know it running
Jerzferno 08-26-2009, 07:10 AM Pep Boys has a 1400 Watt for 179. A guy at my track had a new one this past weekend. Ran 4 chargers, and air compressor and even a small fan. Nice unit. Very quiet too.
BullFrog 08-30-2009, 12:03 PM yep you can get those cheap generators with that long long extension cord (so you won't be able to hear the NOISE it makes. Or you can spend a little more for an" Inverter" Generator that you can have at your foot and is quiet. The prices have come down quite abit since I bought mine (Yamaha 3000). I've seeen Northern tool advertise some (1000 &2000 watts for under $700.00. A 2000 will power a pit with plenty of extra power and it's QUIET but if you like noise go cheap.
a couple of my buddies have those cheap 100.00 generators and i think they are very quiet. to me they sound just like a moped running especially since they are 2 cycle.
i have heard the hondas run and yes they are a little quieter but not by a large margin.
Kerby 08-30-2009, 07:43 PM We bought a $150 one from Harbor Freight 2 years ago and ran it 24hrs x 3days at 2Bristol races in TN over last 2 years with no issues..............very quiet........1 gallon of gas in 8hrs.

What did it power?
Kerby 08-31-2009, 11:52 AM I'm not sure on the watts, but we powered 2 large fans, a tv with dish network, and a coffee maker.
BullFrog 09-01-2009, 05:54 PM You missed the point. The quiet "Inverter "Generators are at 58 db's and the Generator are at least 71 + db.When you can have people come to your pit and your generator is 1 foot away and they ask you is it running. While in the back ground you hear all the other noisy generators running. But then you'll get the cheaper unit and say it's quiet. My Yamaha(3000) has been quiet for 4 years and has run a 14 foot trailer with AC,two chargers, fan a George Forman grill and a TV.During Hurricane season it's run two refrigerators, two fans 18',!3 tv and a light. Plus other things as one of the refrigators and fans was my next door neighboor with a long extension cord.
All you need for r/c racing is a 2000 watt Inverter Generator.
Kerby 09-02-2009, 12:19 AM Most people don't have the $$ to buy a fancy Yamaha. We sit about 6 feet away from ours and don't have any issues talking, these things are small enough to lift with 1 hand. 2000 watts is a bit over kill for just RC race days, whats a soldering iron use 50-100 watts?
BullFrog 09-02-2009, 12:25 PM They also make them in 1000 watts. Again the different between the noise if you haven't ever experenced (an inverter type) it not is like talking apples to apples. It's aplles to oranges. I mentioned Yamaha because at the time when I got mine there were not that many choices (Honda or Yamaha ). My buddy got the yamaha 1000 inverter. anyway on power it's always to get alittle more than just enough. As you never can tell what you'll be using it for in an emergency.Northern tools has several new brands that are way cheaper than the honda or yamaha we bought ( Honeywell) and EGR?)You get what you pay for- always. The end
Kerby 09-02-2009, 01:24 PM I know the Yamaha's are silent........my buddy has one.

I paid 150 for mine it has not given any trouble would you leave yours out in the snow on a to run your stuff I bet not
BullFrog 09-08-2009, 10:04 AM It does not snow in Florida. But it rains alot and yes it gets wet (many - many times).
Jakes Dad 09-18-2009, 06:49 AM If you are worried about noise, look at one of these. http://www.xantrex.com/web/id/63/p/1/pt/10/product.asp Runs off battery. Totally quiet and portable.
