Are those designated as 911's? I thought the GT3's were 997's

Maybe thats just the race version (997)? LOL, sad, I see them every weekend I go to the track and I only refer to them as "cup cars" as the Porsche designation for them is 997 GT3 Cup.

Nice collection though!

That is what Porsche tells Matchbox to call them on the blister. You are correct on your designations. Corvette does the same with current car being a C6, The 1997-2005 model called the C5, The 1984-1996 was a C4 and so on.

The code 997 is used internally at Porsche to specify the generation. It is a Porsche 911 GT3 (Type 997). The types 964, 993, 996, and 997 are all versions of the 911s. Is the GT3 "Cup" version you're talking about the RS model?

Porsche is great at doing this, much like a 944 Turbo is a 951 and a 924 Turbo is a 931.

LOL... Well All I can say is I've worked on and driven this one...

Every part and piece on it is marked 997. This one is a 2008 from the factory. The only difference between that and the 09's are the front fenders, they flare out back to the doorline.

CASPER...I DON'T LIKE YOU ANYMORE! NOT really, but I cry like a little girl just being near a real GT3 and you've driven them!!!!!! What a wonderful opportunity to work on a prototype team and see every show. I know there is more hard work then fun, but what an opportunity!

I called a friend today who is the sales manager for a large Porsche dealer and explained the question we were kicking around. He said that indeed they refer to the cars by their type number (in this case 997) or they would never know what model / version each person was referring to.

But as for the board question, he said that in print on all the documentation, they were listed as 911 then the type number. 911 Type 997 GT3 in this case. But to close it off for me, he said for the racing versions (which he has sold two ever) just like you said, all they refer to them as is a "Cup Car".

Then he knows who is a real Porsche fan if the person he is talking with responds..."Cup? Oh MAN, I just LOVE Nascar!":freak::p

Shows I did not know as much as I though I did. I knew just enough to be dangerous!

That pic was taken at the Daytona test in January before the 24.

That car is currently for sale if anyone wants it! You could grab the car and all the support equipment for $170,000.

I drove it last year at New Jersey. I was helping the team out when I had time and they asked me if I wanted to wheel it during one of the test sessions. Fastest I saw was 140 at the end of the front strech before I got into turn 1. Sad thing is I was faster than the two drivers in the car!

We had Randy Pobst and Shane lewis in it at Daytona this year and pulled a 10th place out if it... not bad with all things considered. Randy is Magic behind the wheel.

If your jealous about that, I won't tell you my experience with the new Riley track day car at VIR earlier this year!

Dude...YOUR KILLIN' ME!!!! I drove VIR recently and fell in love with the place! I saw that and Barber for the first time this year in real life and went nuts over both! ( quickly learned to avoid an off in Alambama though!)

I am a hugh RP fan and I am glad to hear from a real insider that is is all that. He comes across as a very nice guy as well. They should have left you in the car at VIR though. I will talk to them about that!

VIR is a great track. I hate Barber, only because when we go there it's 110 degrees and a killer weekend.

I managed to do 5 laps of VIR in that car. It's not a DP, but it's still fun to drive. I mean come on, this thing had AC in it... All it lacked was a stereo... lol

Man, I really need that black one. I'm having such withdrawal that I'm buying extras of the green one just to feel better. This is my favorite MB casting, for sure. I just need the yellow one and the new one to complete the set. Thanks for the great pics, sschevyman1!!
