View Full Version : ceramic vs steel bearings $$$$$$
bhewett102 06-29-2009, 10:21 PM hi my name is bryan and im a new member to hobby talk.
im getting back into 1/10 electric concrete oval racing 20 years later.
things are a lot different.
on a low budget and and would like to know if ceramic bearings are worth $$.
thanks bryan
jblackburn 06-29-2009, 10:50 PM It is more important that you have smooth bearings than ceramic or steel. I tend to use ceramic bearings on carpet because they are smooth and last a long time (they are still perfect after many runs). I use steel on velodromes because I replace them often. I wouldn't worry about running about ceramics ... any advantage they have is extremely slight.
J-Dub Racing 06-30-2009, 10:52 AM With steel bearings you will replace them more often than ceramic's. They are both very smooth, and very fast. In the long run you will probably safe money with ceramic, but the initial investment is larger.
katf1sh 07-01-2009, 05:20 PM ok
i love ceramic bearings when racing inside on the rug..
but for 1.00 a bearing (boca) you can't go wrong with them for outdoor racing
darrel 07-01-2009, 06:31 PM Just remember if you get wacked real hard with ceramics you will most likely break one. I've seen that happen quite often.

swtour 07-02-2009, 11:33 AM I use the Boca 99c bearing deal - (My Carpet racing SUCKS - so I use them there too!)
For I believe it's a $12.00 order, shipping is FREE
I buy 5-6 TUBES at a time (10 bearings per tube) and change the axle bearings before every race day(On the VELOs) - and on the short tracks...about every 2nd or 3rd race.
.........way back in the GOLDEN Old Days - I remember having to pay $5.00 - $6.00 each for crappy bearings - and I'd run them WAY too long - having Boca have the .99c deal is awesome!!

The outer race seems to be a problem. A couple of guys I run with at r/c madness have broken them quite often.
