View Full Version : Slash questions?
Fireball929 06-23-2009, 11:38 PM How do you gain rear bite with the slash? Our track was very slippery the other night and I had a hard time to keep it straight.
I have a gtb w/17.5 novak geared at 86/21 and it keeps thermaling on me. THe trucks is as fast as the other guys down the straights. Should I go lower on the pinion or go higher on the spur? Timing is turned all the way down. Lipo powered too.
I saw this locker transmission on ebay and was wondering the purpose of it?
Thanks
Mike D. 06-23-2009, 11:49 PM i added weight to mine, under esc. mine was geared 83/32.
harmocy 06-23-2009, 11:53 PM Yeah that sounds good with brushless you go down on the spur and up way up on the pinion!!!
harmocy 06-23-2009, 11:54 PM Brushless systems make there torque right now unlike a brushed motor that comes on with more RPM's that is why you dont need the large spur
harmocy 06-23-2009, 11:56 PM That will take some of the wheel spin away also you may want to open up your tranny and get some dif locker in there this will help it from "DIFFING" out it makes it kinda like a ball dif or limited slip rear end in a real truck
Fireball929 06-24-2009, 06:19 AM Thanks. Where do you get a smaller spur? I have only seen larger ones.
Mike D. 06-24-2009, 09:05 AM got mine through towerhobbies.
Jerzferno 06-24-2009, 12:14 PM Loosen the slipper a little. The slipper will..........."slip" rather than your tires breaking loose. Play around with it to find what works best for you. If set right, the slipping wont slow you down. You'll be quicker because of less wheel spin, and can be more agressive in the corners without fear of spinning out.
harmocy 06-24-2009, 02:54 PM That is a good tip as well play with it a 1/8 turn at a time until you get it right
rednekdirtoval 06-24-2009, 03:03 PM Shim the diff housing in the front, "anti-squat", also, switch the RR to the LR and vise-versa, soften the rear and stiffen the front. When you do make sure you seal the bottom of the diff housing to keep dirt out. PM me if you have anymore questions, I would be glad to help if I can. People I race with like to snoop around, if you know what I mean!!!!
harmocy 06-26-2009, 12:10 AM Hey fireball have you made any progress with your SLASH???
Fireball929 06-26-2009, 08:30 PM I won't know till monday. I'm going to play with the gearing and add a little weight to the truck. Thanks guys

disruptor10 07-08-2009, 08:10 AM i added weight to mine, under esc. mine was geared 83/32.
Is that gearing for off road , just wondering . I have been running 13.5 86-20-21 with mine , want to switch over to 17.5 and need a gear starting point
J Blaze 07-12-2009, 07:58 PM you dont need to add any more weight to it.
MWilterink 07-13-2009, 05:45 PM 83-30 is what i run with my 17.5.
Mike D. 07-13-2009, 07:57 PM you dont need to add any more weight to it.
if you want better overall traction....then yes you do need to add weight under esc, and equal weight to the front to balance out in air activity, you will have better throttle responce and steering this way, after weight added, tighten up slipper. if running mod slash get a pair of 1/8 scale buggy tires with wheel adaptors. you will be set!!
disruptor10 07-14-2009, 09:04 PM 83-30 is what i run with my 17.5.
thanks man thats what i'll try
kra2y 07-16-2009, 10:52 PM i also have 83-29 on my 17.5 novak and temps are still a little low.
kra2y 07-17-2009, 04:37 PM tires are the biggest differance. if you race you should see if they will allow you to use 8th scale tires before you buy any and maybe waist you money.

I spose if ya wana go all out with mod motor, tires and adding weight
then you better replace the slashes week link .
the shocks! Losi 8 shocks are a bolt on!($50 used)
if your going 2 stay stock just change the gearing and the shock oils
AND YOU DONT NEED TO ADD WEIGHT.:dude::wave:

Especially not if you use a 7-cell NiMH pack instead of a LiPo.
Jerzferno 07-22-2009, 09:21 PM Add weight to an already heavy vehicle? Makes NO sense. That will not get you better traction. If in a spec class, suspension set up, Loosen the slipper a bit, and most importantly THROTTLE CONTROL will give you better traction. In a mod class tires tires tires.
Mike D. 07-22-2009, 09:28 PM then why do people add weight to there real 2wd trucks in the winter???? for better traction....right??? hmmmm...
iceboxracer 07-22-2009, 10:46 PM I agree no more weight on a slash stock or mod. Better tires in mod class for sure but even for stock I cut mine with a cutting wheel and run on the clay at bfg and they were noticably better than just stock. Even on our loomy track a well sharpened set of rear stockers work great.
BuzzBomber 07-23-2009, 10:08 AM then why do people add weight to there real 2wd trucks in the winter???? for better traction....right??? hmmmm...
Take a look at the weight bias on a pickup truck with an empty bed. A lot of times, it's approaching 70/30, with the 30% over the driven wheels. Hence, adding weight over the drive axle. The slash does not weigh out like that.
Leonard 07-23-2009, 06:26 PM then why do people add weight to there real 2wd trucks in the winter???? for better traction....right??? hmmmm...
Ummmmm maybe because they are driving on snow and ice and not racing or changing their shock or chassis adjustments to gain traction. Did they add weight to the front of their pickups too to balance it out in the air. Apples to oranges !
kra2y 07-23-2009, 10:47 PM goosebumps will give you better traction. you will have to lower your gearing with higher bite tires. with stock tires i was 83-28. now i had to go down to 83-25 to stop thermaling with a 17.5 novak
Justme2 08-27-2009, 09:06 PM I agree, NO ADDED WEIGHT to the Slash! You are talking about a Slash that weighs close to 5 pounds verses a 2wd stock that weighs roughly 2 pounds less with the same electronics. The BIGGEST thing you can do is adjustments to the suspension and tires. A brushless/lipo with box stock settings is like putting pearls on a pig.
SLASH4 10-13-2009, 10:19 AM i added weight to mine, under esc. mine was geared 83/32.
WAS WONDERING WITH GEARING IS THERE TIRE SPIN THATS BIGGEST PROBELM WAS RUNNING 86 18 IN STOCK SETUP WANTED TO GET RID OF SPIN SO WENT WITH 86 23 GOT RID OF TIRE SPIN BUT NOT ENOUGH POWER TO GET OVER SOME JUMPS NOW IM WITH A 17.5 NOVAK AND LOOKING FOR BEST GEARING LOOKING FOR BETTER THEN NORMAL SPEED AND NO THERMAL I DONT WANNA SMOKE IT BEEN THERE DONE IT LOL ILL TRY YOUR SETUP WHATS THE SHOCK OIL AT I USE 60 UP FRONT AND 45 IN REAR and sorry about capps
SLASH4 10-15-2009, 12:06 AM Was Very Pleased With The Way The Truck Responded Ran For About 20 Minutes Pulled Off Track Temped Motor At 97.7 And Esc At 103.8 Im Good With That Response From Car Was Also Good Very Little Wheel Spin Thanks For The Info
KevMc 11-10-2009, 08:37 PM Rear hub carries off the Traxxas 4-tec will give you some more rear toe in, it helps.
hopper 12-12-2009, 10:48 PM i added an ounce under my speed control location. Worked well!. If you can find a copy, about a year ago xtreme rc magazine did a story on how to set up a slash. I think it was november of 08 (not sure). GOOD article!
mad_about_losi 12-14-2009, 05:21 PM Will the JConcept Goosebump tire go on Slash rims????
Never mind I looked on JConcepts site and the do match for Slash rims
