Got some new standard piston rings for my 13hp Briggs and the end gap looks great! The engine has a steel sleeve, do I need to de-glaze the cylinder? Don't think the rings are chrome rings either...

No need if the replacement rings are chrome, but otherwise it would not be a bad idea to run a hone through the cylinder to establish a nice crosshatch pattern.

Thanks for the input...I'll run a hone in the cylinder in the morning and get this thing back together! You know, I used to hone out aluminum cylinders too way back when. I just read in one of my Briggs & Stratton repair manuals that you DON"T hone aluminum cylinders! Oops!

When I was a kid(in the 50's) an old guy said "we shade tree mechanics never have the right tools for stuff so just wipe the cylinder down with vinegar and put the same piston back in the same hole tomorrow", I guess a little rust will do the same a honing. Have a good one. Geo

a lot of manufacturers will say not to hone b/c of the glaze but you know what, if it works it works, and if it don't what did you have to loose in the first place right..

Got her back together! The new standard rings were a great fit. Seemed to go back together awfully easy...almost scares me! Everything lined up nicely when I replaced the crankcase...everything torqued well. I guess tomorrow I'll see how well it runs! It actually ran quite well when it was trying to act like a mosquito sprayer!

Well, it looks like I have a nice running 13hp Briggs again! Runs like a fine sewing machine without all the smoke!
