"Outlander" - Starring Jim Caviezel, John Hurt, Sophia Miles and Ron Perlman.
A space traveller crash-lands in 10th century Viking territory, unleashing a fire-breathing alien creature from his hold. He must gain the trust of the locals and join forces with them, using only iron age weapons, to defeat the beast before it lays waste to every village in the area.

Awesome monster, great Viking action, all the best elements of Alien, Predator, and 13th warrior, and, heck, even Dragonslayer. And an alternate explanation of the origin of the Beowulf legend! Hey, aliens, monsters AND Vikings! What more could you ask?

"The Sky Crawlers" - an anime film set in one of those alternate realities they like so much. Teenagers who seem to be eternally young serve as fighter pilots in a war between corporations. No one seems to know what the war is about, no one wants to talk about the pilots who've come and gone before. The main character puzzles over why the female CO treats him so oddly while trying to find out about his predecessor. Meanwhile they fly mission after mission, shooting down and being shot down, while life for the civilians seems to go on as if the war was just something that belongs there, like the weather.

The dogfights in this film are the best CGI battles since Yukikaze. Much BETTER than Yukikaze, given the few years of advancement between the films. The aircraft are post-WWII in flavor - the main fighter is based on the Japanese Shinden canard pusher, and the "enemy ace" looks like a Hawker Sea Fury on steroids. The secondary aircraft have a very Luft '46 look to them. It's a great film for those of us who are big kids that love dogfights and cool planes.

There's a Fine Molds kit of the main fighter too. I have it, and it's as realistically detailed as any "real" Fine Molds plane kit!

I wish there were kits of ALL the planes in the film!

added to netflix.

My recommendations might weird out the general population.

Watched "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" this weekend. Still humming some of the tunes.

John Travolta as a used-up ex-college professor on the down and out in New Orleans tugged at me in "A Love Song for Bobby Long." Well, Scarlett Johansson made it worth watching too.

No modelling tie-ins.

I don't much care for anime, but that is a COOL AIRPLANE!

My netflix recommendation: "Let the Right One In".

I've got the soundtrack CD. That movie simultaneously made me uncomfortable as heck and entertained the heck out of me.

Just saw Outlander last night, and I couldn't agree more with you, John. It was great! I'll also look for The Sky Crawlers.

I've also seen Let The Right One In, and highly recommend it, as well.

I've had "Outlander" in my Netflix queue for over a week now. A friend on another forum recommended it and I added it to my queue, but it's been on a "long wait" status the whole time. Either this film is pretty popular, or Netflix has only 1 or 2 copies and the people renting them are hanging onto them. I'm keeping it at the top of my queue until I get to see it!

Must be a local thing; it's available "now" in Atlanta.

Really liked it as well, it's subtle and nuanced, if it had been made by an American director it probably would have totally sucked.

Best vampire movie since 30 Days of Night, best bully-gets-what-he -deserves scene since Ralphie pounded Scut Farkus in A Christmas Story.

Ahhh but did Oskar get what he deserved?

Watched it last night. I'm not up on vampire lore but it seemed very "authentic."

Do you think:
Oskar became Eli's new companion and his destiny was to grow old while
she remains young, and kill for her? Sad. Entertaining but sad.

I've read somewhere online that they're planning an American remake of this. And I just know right away that it won't even be half as good as the original.

I agree with you on the ending.

When I saw that Oskar had ran off with Eli, rather than being cute, or sweet, I thought it was
very chilling. The movie took place in the 1980s, and I can't help but wonder where Oskar is these days,
assuming he's even still alive now.

Have to watch it again, but:

I think they gave away her real age in one scene where she was saying
something to the effect, "I wish you could be me." It seemed they
superimposed an ancient (well older anyway) woman's face in place of Eli's.
I wonder if she was cultivating a replacement for the gentleman who had been
her helper before...

agree: chilling. And not just the Swedish winter.
