One of the president's honored guests – Jim Norene, a member of the 502nd Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne – didn't make it.

"Last night, after visiting this cemetery for one last time, he passed away in his sleep," Obama told a solemn crowd of vets stretching farther than most eyes can see. "Jim was gravely ill when he left his home, and he knew that he might not return. But just as he did sixty-five years ago, he came anyway. May he now rest in peace with the boys he once bled with, and may his family always find solace in the heroism he showed here."

Give em Hell Jim and thank you and Gods speed

I was going to post Omaha Beach but this touched more then anything...

I think you made the right choice posting this Coach! Definitely sad that almost the entire nation went on like it was another day and very little was done to stop for a moment and realize that things could have been gravely different had D-Day ended differently 65 years ago. It's a large price to pay and one that we will never be able to pay back to the men and women that did what they did.

God bless all of our men and women that continue serving with their WHOLE heart knowing the price it may costs them!

People nowadays would lose their minds with a death toll like this from one battle in today's conflicts. Puts it in perspective.

My dad served in WWII, my brother in law served in the Navy 25+ years, my niece served in the Navy, and my oldest Nephew flies Super Hornets in the Navy now. I never served but I can appreciate the danger and sacrifices that are made to keep this world from going pear-shaped at any moment from some power-mad little dictator.

The D-Day assault of the Normandy beaches is a shining example of citizens of democratic countries making an extreme sacrifice to fight tyranny. Many live in freedom today due to this noble effort and many like it. God bless the fallen and the survivors alike!
