View Full Version : Autoart : Porsche 928
One of my favourites, the 1977 Porsche 928 - complete with the telephone dial wheels.

69Stang 06-02-2009, 11:10 PM YES SIR! That's what I'm talkin' bout'! I really dig the silver one, super pics, thanks so much.
ranchero 06-03-2009, 12:59 PM I like the Auto Art 928 in this shade blue; got one too.
I remember when these cars were newly introduced. They were radical; something completely different for Porsche. First V-8. First real four seater (though barely). First rear wheel drive. I still prefer the original style 928 as Auto Art has modelled. When these cars were new, they made their competition - the contemporary Mercedes 450SL & Jaguar XJS - seem ordinary.
Shortly after the 928 was new Solido released a very good 1/43 scale model of the car in red with a black interior. It also had the "telephone dial" wheels. And there were at least a couple of releases of various 928 versions as promotionals for Porsche by the Bavarian model maker NZG in the '80s.

69Stang 06-04-2009, 12:24 AM "First rear wheel drive"...you mean first forward mounted engin with rear drive? Wer'ent all Porsche's rear engin, rear wheel drive prior to this release? Not being smart, I really don't know. I though all Porsche's were already rear wheel drive.
alex1485 06-04-2009, 12:47 AM wasn't this the first car with a rear transaxle? (like the ferrari 599 GTB/C5-C6 Corvettes) ?
dragonhead00 06-04-2009, 01:08 AM I love the 928! It's design was a departure from Porsche's usual way. It's still a stunner to see moving down the freeway at speed. I got a chance to see some run during a Porsche club meet a while back. Their exhaust note is mean.
Lummox 06-04-2009, 10:36 AM wasn't this the first car with a rear transaxle? (like the ferrari 599 GTB/C5-C6 Corvettes) ?
'61-'63 Pontiac Tempest/LeMans had a rear transaxle, unfortunately they handled horrifically.
Porsches were only rear engined until the crummy little 924s, I think.
I'm sure ranchero just miss-poke.
ranchero 06-04-2009, 01:00 PM Yes, I stated it incorrectly and was wrong too.
I meant to say that it was the first front engine, rear wheel drive Porsche.
And now I see that is incorrect. The 924 came in 1977; the 928 came in 1978. The 924 must not have made much of an impression on me; the 928 did and that is what I remember.
Corrections acknowledged. - ranchero -
69Stang 06-04-2009, 01:35 PM Speaking for myself (and all the others I think) no harm, no fowl. I was truly unsure of the driveline history, thus my orgional question. Never ment to bust your chops. But I like to learn a little every day, and today it's that the '61-'63 Pontiac Tempest/LeMans had a rear transaxle!!!! I would have NEVER thought that!
Lummox 06-06-2009, 01:12 PM Very few cars had front engine/rear transaxle.
'70s Alfa coupes and sedans come to mind. I had a '79 Alfetta GT w/transaxle made by De Dion.
It had in-board discs and was an excellent road car. Almost perfect 50/50 wieght distribution with the little 4 cyl.
alex1485's origonal question still begs to be answered.
To me it's a two part question: What was the first car with this set up,
and what was the first PRODUCTION car with this configuration.
Lummox 06-06-2009, 01:25 PM Yo, check it Alex.
The answer to your excellent question.
As always, the Italians give you more passion for the crashin' - sex-on-wheels, baby!!!!

I had a '76 Alfetta!!!
Lummox 06-06-2009, 10:35 PM Yup, exactly - same color and wheels, too!
Mine was actually a Sprint Voloce` with leather and a beautifull wooden steering wheel.
Was your '76 injected? (Mine was)
plankowner 06-07-2009, 08:14 PM What was Porsche's first water cooled engine? Did Porsche he ever make a 4 door car???? ;)

Lummox 06-12-2009, 10:30 AM Interesting to be sure, but I don't like it at all. It looks like a Pacer with a chopped top!
The silver one behind it looks good thuogh.
alex1485 06-13-2009, 12:51 AM well.... the Porsche designers were actually inspired by the pacers rear glass and "copied" it!
