fella's,
I need to purchase a new valve spring compressor, mine broke. what kind do you use for working on tractor engines???
I am talking about the " C " clamp shaped one, the ones that have a jackscrew that pushes on the valve face and the other end clamps on to the spring.
I looked at some online and the reviews said they twisted when you put the pressure on them.
what kind or brand do you recommend??
Thanks,
SWAMPER

Try going to www.goodson.com they carry all kinds of machine shop tools. They have several types of valve spring compressors.

I have the one sold on the Snap-on truck,a re-branded Blue-point one that is made for small engines.Looks similar to the one offered on the above link. The 1st one lasted several years, but like you read, spread in the "C",so it wouldn't keep the pressure in a straight line.
It was warrantied, the new one broke at the foot part the very first time.
I got another compressor under warranty but it just looks/feels even more low quality that the others.
If it breaks or bends again,I'm going to forget about the warranty and beef it up by welding more steel into the "c" frame, and also the foot part.
So I don't have a recommendation,except I would say I've had bad results with the Blue-point one.
If you score a nice quality,value-priced unit that works well, could you post your results here to share with the other techs here?
Thanks,
Steve

I was thinking about going to SEARS and checking out this one... it appears to be for automotive use, but I dont know if automobile valve springs are larger diameter than Small engine springs. I was thinking about trying it, as it is only 20 bucks. it says its a Craftsman so I imagine if it busts I can get it replaced.
if it works and is pretty rigid I'll let you all know.
