Anyone else notice the latest trend from new sellers (I'm talking zero feedback) with stupidly high opening bids? There was one where he had an opening bid of $225 for six "nothing special" AFX cars. Now there's one on there selling 2 Tomy Super G's that are as common as rocks for an opening bid of $50 plus $7 shipping! And he's calling them "VERY RARE"! :freak::lol:

Are they dumb or just hoping for suckers?

Mostly suckers, on occasions you'll find someone that just doesn't get that you can't charge new, in the package prices for something that has 50,000 laps on it, they equate old with being valuable for whatever reason. They are the same people trying to sell you used children's clothing at a garage sale for in-store prices right next to their betamax tapes for $10 a pop......

Would agree. Bad thing is, he may find one. Have seen it before. Ungodly amount of $ spent on something they could have picked up for $15 bucks or less if they did a little looking. They'll learn, eventually. rr

There was one other I noticed recently but can't recall the details. It made me laugh though and shake my head due to the sheer wackiness.

I do know of one seller who has an Aurora G+ Andretti black Lotus with NO stickers and he wants over $27. At least they provide a laugh or two.

Not to defend them all, but I think it's mostly uninformed sellers who just don't know better. They have an attic or celler find and don't do enough research to see it's true value. They think a slot is a slot, and brand, model, and condition are irrelevant. Even if they have a clue what it is brand/model wise, if they take ebay's seller shortcut to research value they're not going to get accurate prices. The bay will take full advantage of blissful ignorance for the almighty dollar. I've never used ebay's previous listing's price guide, but I can almost bet if you type in a particular model slot in it, the highest priced ones would pop up first. Higher start fees = more money in listing fees..

Once the auction goes unsold, reality sinks in and a lower starting price along with maybe a little better research take place. If it sells high, it feeds the value search option for the next seller..

I keep looking for that seller that doesn't realize what he has and lets it go cheap. I'm sure you guys are too! Some of the high prices are funny or, crazy. I check the soon ending and newly listed at least twice a day.

I also check the newly listed 3 or 4 times a day hoping to score something before someone else. I've gotten some really good deals on the buy it now listings right soon after they come up.

I wonder how many of us here are bidding on the same auctions?....

Here are a couple I've placed low dollar bids on, but am not pursuing with gusto (in other words I have little hope of winning):

Original AFX '55 Chev, black w/yellow flames. Would love to have this car, but just not in the cards right now. I am interested to see what it goes for though.

Banded Purple Chrome '57 Nomad. Again, would love to have, but just not in the cards right now. I don't want/need a banded car anyway - just want a nice runner.

One possibility could be the economy. New folks are putting things for sale on Ebay with a high starting bid hoping to raise money they may need for bills.
I've seen some high winning bids for common cars on Ebay and it's usaully a new buyer or, (dare I say) ghost bidder driving up the price. Randy.

At least I'll have a few that I can slam into the wall myself now. I'll be working on 4 and 5 this week.
