View Full Version : Could somebody explain to me how to make a flip up body.
sjracer 05-27-2009, 09:24 PM Could somebody explain to me how to make a flip up body. I wanted to take a Tyco wide pan and use it on an afx four chassis.
Hilltop Raceway 05-27-2009, 11:27 PM SJR, Not sure exactly what you'er looking for, but try these for some ideas...RM

sjracer 05-27-2009, 11:34 PM What I am looking for is more in the area of the second link. However, a four gear chassis wouldn't allow for such, I I was thinking about a piece added to the back of the chassis that would allow it to tilt.
sjracer 05-27-2009, 11:42 PM What I was thinking was something to be made along the lines of the old Tyco's flip ups ( catch me and gotcha), that could be attached to the chassis with out adding much weight.

I would try asking Bruce Gavins about this on his Bad Dawg thread as he worked & designed many, many, many of the Tyco slot cars and Remote Control cars.
Heck maybe Bruce could make a mold for a hinge or something like this? It sure couldn't hurt to ask him. He has been doing stuff like this his whole life and has made many working proto-types of stuff just like this.
My thought would be a heavy duty but, light weight casted up hinge. Heck if you came up with it he might even cast that up.
Bob...mabye he would even cast the catch me and gotcha???...zilla
T-jetjim 05-28-2009, 04:52 PM Bill Hall built a hinge into his rumble seat Hot Rod. Check out one of his posts.

Bill Hall 05-28-2009, 09:21 PM The trick is two fold... to provide something for the hood to rest on AND remain securly closed when running. Big scale guys use hidden magnets. A bump and pocket is the traditional small scale method.
Slicing the hood off and hinging it would be the simple part. Keeping it snug ...but easily accessed is the voodoo.
Joez did one way back when...so did Buster, but I think they cheated and used a Willys....
Joez?
sjracer 05-28-2009, 11:16 PM I was wondering what style/type of hinge would work on a four gear? In the front I was considering either using some type of metal tubing for the body post then gluing a dot magnet perhaps to the chassis (or vice verse) or using plastic tubing for the body post and attaching a piece of metal and a dot magnet. I'm concerned about the rear hinge because four gear are so fickle to begin with adding any extra weight could be a nightmare.
Bad Dawg Slots 05-29-2009, 02:35 AM I'd be more then happy to help . Let me know what I can do for you
sjracer 05-29-2009, 05:35 AM Mr. Hall and Bad Dawg could you post picks of your past projects involing aflip up top or send me a link to them.
resinmonger 05-29-2009, 12:17 PM I have made flip top cars with no extra parts. Somehow, when I race my car ends up flipped over on its top...:freak:
gear buster 05-29-2009, 10:36 PM Bill,
I used Duct Tape... It flexes better and stays put in crashes...Roll in half and attach to front for body hold down...Gray...
No really..LOL
I used brass tubing and pins in the side of the body.
Glued the brass tubing( Like the old AFX /super II front mount) to the rear of chassis, 2 straight pins threw the body side to create pivet.
