I Know That Novak Motors Have Thermal Protection On Them But How Hot Do They Have To Get Before It Will Shut Down??? I Have Had My Motors @ 227 Degrees Or Around That Temp Several Times And It Has Never Shut Down.. So I Guess My Question Is If Novak Says Our Motors Should Not Go Over Like 175 Degrees Why Dont They Set The Thermal Protection At Like 190 So If You Do Get A Little Hot It Wont Shut Off Right Away But I Also Wont Let It Get So Hot That It Damages Anything?? My Other Question I Have Is How Hot Does The Motor Have To Get Before It Will Thermal????

I think that Novak says they should shut down well below 200F. Only Novak speed controls have the thermal protection for the motor, so if you run a Novak motor on a LRP speed control, there is no thermal protection for the motor.

However, I have found that the thermal sensor in Novak motors can go bad and then you have no thermal protection. The way I found this out is that I tried to run an old 5800 motor with a new Havoc speed control. The Havoc will not run a motor unless the thermal sensor is working. My Havoc would not run one of my 5800s because the thermal sensor went bad.

Prior Novak speed controls would still run a motor with a bad thermal sensor but could no longer detect motor temperature and shut down the motor when it got too hot. People (mainly oval racers) used to take advantage of this by cutting the blue sensor wire (thermal sensor wire) so the speed control would not shut down the motor if (when?) it got too hot.

the thermal protection they advertise is only when u use the novak speedo. any other speedo will run it til it burns up lol

Well I Guess That Makes Sense....i Run A Tekin Rs And Just Last Weekend My Motor Was Coming Off At 208 And The Motor Ran Strong All The Way Through... Seams Like The Hotter She Runs The Better She Runs....

Yep, it's only with the Novak speedos. I don't think Tekin has a thermal limit, but I know LRP doesn't. I've smoked a couple with LRP speedos.

If you repeatedly run your motor over 175*F, you will ruin the motor and rotor. Motors/rotors seem to have different tolerances but if you keep getting it hot. It will eventually fry. Biggest thing I've noticed is once a motor has been abused it won't go back to normal operating temperatures, it will keep running hot no matter what you do with gearing/ timing etc.

I believe the old instructions with the Novak ESC said shutdown happened at 180 deg.

Doughboy, might check you bearings, they will run the temp up also.

MISSED YA THIS WEEKEND RON.... MY MOTOR RAN GREAT IN PRACTICE I RAN FAST LAP @ 4.22 AND AS THE DAY WENT ON THERE WERE A FEW HIGH 4.1'S LAID DOWN... BUT TONIGHT I WAS TAKING MY MOTOR APART TO GO THROUGH IT CLEAN IT AND GET IT READY FOR NEXT WEEKEND. AND I STARTED MESSING WITH MY BEARING AND THE REAR BEARING WAS PERFECT BUT THE FRONT BEARING NOT SO MUCH... IT SPUN OK ITS NOT LIKE IT WAS LOCKED UP OR ANYTHING BUT IT HAD SOME KIND OF SPUR OR SOMETHING AND WHEN I WOULD SPIN IT YOU COULD FEEL IT CATCHING AND A COUPLE TIMES WHEN I WOULD SPIN IT, IT WOULD CATCH THAT SPUR SO HARD IT WOULD CHANGE DIRECTIONS. SO I KNOW THAT CANT BE GOOD FOR THE MOTOR SO I JUST PUT A NEW BEARING IT AND WE WILL SEE HOW SHE DOES THIS WEEKEND..

Speaking of Bearings...

Randy @ Big Boy Toys is building a sweet bearing break-in and checking tool

Fits 1/4, 3/16, 1/8 and Brushless Motor Bearings. Quickly clean and check the condition of your bearings while under a simulated load. An undiscovered bad bearing can make for an ill handling race car and be a source of frustration in trying to trouble shoot setup issues. The cleaner quickly cleans and confirms your bearings condition. Simply insert bearing between the base and weight, pour cleaner in through the top and spin. Fluid flows through bearing and into recess in bottom of cleaner for no mess maintenance. A must have for any pit box!
