View Full Version : 69 Stang's MGA
ClearHooter 05-22-2009, 07:24 PM I just couldn't bring myself to go hacking on this one. So I just gave it a detailing. The wheels came from a JL Studebaker Hawk. These were blackwashed as was the grill. From the pics looks like I can give the wheels another wash. The dash was color matched to the body as were most of the MGA's of that era and it was detailed. The rake of the widshield was decreased by running hot tap water over the windshield and carefully pulling the windshield forward. A tag was made for the rear which reads "MGA 1800, 61 North Carolina, Drive Safely." The Headlamps were filed back and a small dab of epoxy forms the headlamp lenses. Stang if you were hoping for a cut job on this one I apologize. There are just things I can't bring myself to do. If you have a before pic left in your Photobucket post it please I forgot to take a before shot.

me too!
69Stang 05-23-2009, 12:38 AM That car now exudes class. In our hobby, as in much of life, pure skill is nothing without knowledge. In this case, you had the skills to create anything you wanted, but the taste to know when to stop. It's stunning!
Here is your before pic...

ClearHooter 05-23-2009, 02:49 PM Thanks for posting the before shot. I usually take one but I just brain farted and didn't.
I think the wheels make the difference. I might swap the white walls to the inside and see how that looks. Granted white walls were the thing back in the '50's and early '60's but it might improve the looks to have the black walls showing. We'll see. I tried a white tonneau cover last night but it looked like Fido's butt. Deffinately black if I go that way.
Lummox 05-23-2009, 06:51 PM Amazing how downright crappy a car can look with the WRONG wheels.
You done this sucker right!!!!
ClearHooter 05-23-2009, 08:04 PM Black walls or white?

Or does it make a difference?
camarors 05-23-2009, 08:20 PM They both look good, but black walls for me. I would add some black paint on the base too, just my thoughts. The car does look killer. I like it.
69Stang 05-23-2009, 09:05 PM Yep, I think my vote would be black as well, though the white walls still look amazing!
dusrusg 05-23-2009, 11:02 PM Blackwalls.
BudJ63 05-24-2009, 05:48 AM Blackwalls
Lummox 05-24-2009, 09:45 AM '61 and before, you could get wide whites or black walls.
It's hard to make an MGA look bad with any of the three.

I've seen several of the pastel colored "A's" ie the turquoise, yellow, baby blue even the rest of the colors with the porter walls. Always thought they looked goofy on a car like that. To each their own taste I suppose
As far as colors go...Not sure how far this went back but at least after Leyland took over BMC there were no paint numbers assigned to MG's. They went by the year. I became painfully aware of this after my MIDGET got rear ended by a Mack Truck on Pecan an Independence in Charlotte. The guy was looking at the neglejays in a store that used to be there. Anyway, sittin' at the light this clown just rolled up into the back of the MG. Then started pushing me into the car in front of me. It crossed my mind he'd seen the movie "Duel" and was reinacting it! I became rather panicked at the prospect of becoming the meat in a vehicular sandwitch :freak: The light fortunately changed and I got out far enough for him to see me. I jumped out (at that time I had hair down to my waist and only weighed about 120 lbs.) and ran back to the MACK jumped on the running board and asked in no uncertain terms if the SOB was trying to kill me! "Just didn't see you." was his reply. Anyway...Took the car to the Brithish Leyland dealer on Elezebeth Ave to have the repair work done. About a week later they called and said it was ready. I'd told them I wanted it painted back "that Mallard Green" color but in the translation they painted it back the original 1970 color. I walked in to the shop and asked where the car was? They pointed to the sick green looking "fidget." "That's not the right color!" "It's the original color" the body forman said. At that point I was told they didn't go by paint numbers or names but by the year the car was made. My instructions never made it to the shop so they looked at the VIN and determined it to be a 1970 and not a 1971. So it never got painted the color I wanted.
Thorrr 05-24-2009, 11:27 AM Another vote for black sidewalls
