Sony is set to release ICONS OF SCI-FI: TOHO COLLECTION on August 18, a DVD set which will feature the long-awaited releases of MOTHRA, THE H-MAN and BATTLE IN OUTER SPACE. And like Sony's fantastic "Hammer Films" horror movie collection, fans can go to Amazon.com and vote for the cover they want by clicking HERE (http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html?docId=1000373021&poll_name=Customer%2BVote%3A%2BIcons%2Bof%2BSci-Fi%2BToHo%2BCollection&Customer%2BVote%3A%2BIcons%2Bof%2BSci-Fi%2BToHo%2BCollection%7C183=615&x=107&y=8).
phrankenstign 05-17-2009, 11:22 PM I haven't watched the movie Mothra in ages! I don't think I'm familiar with "The H-Man". Battle in Outer Space seems familiar, although the title makes it seem like a Star Wars rip-off.
btw I think I like the first cover the most.

ThisGuy 05-18-2009, 04:37 AM Glad to see H-Man and Battle reissued, but ideally, you should not mix daikaiju films like Mothra with the other classic tokusatsu sci-fi from ToHo. Those really are separate genres.
The third should ideally be Human Vapor if the rights aren't already held elsewhere. Other possibilities would be Half-Human (good luck to anyone getting the rights to that again) or Latitude Zero.

"Message from Space" was the Japanese SW rip-off, at least the most widely known one.
As fun as they are to watch, most of these Japanese sci-fi/monster flicks are a bit too camp for my taste IMO.
But I'll take anime any day.;)
dreamer 2.0 05-20-2009, 05:10 PM Latitude Zero is already being put out by Tokyo Shock. Gorath still needs a R1 release, though.

Great news. I specifically didn't mention Gorath since it's technically daikaiju with Maguma in it, but I'd like it in R1 as well.
dreamer 2.0 05-22-2009, 12:01 AM Ah! I still know almost nothing about Gorath, so thanks for the info!
Lloyd Collins 05-22-2009, 04:57 PM I like the TOHO classic movies, so I'm for this release.
Jodet 05-22-2009, 07:40 PM I'm waiting for 'The Mysterians'.
Capt. Krik 05-22-2009, 08:25 PM The Mysterians has been released in Region 1 dvd. It's been available for a couple of years. You may be able to find it on some of the on line video stores like Deep Discount or Movies Unlimited.
dreamer 2.0 05-22-2009, 11:59 PM Of the Toho films...
The Mysterians is one of the Tokyo Shock line and can probably be found individually, but also in a convenient 3-pack with Varan and Matango. Varan is dull but Matango is well worth it.
Tokyo Shock currently has Frankenstein vs. Baragon, Atragon, Yog, Dogora, Latitude Zero, and the three aforementioned.
War in Space has been available from Discotek, though Amazon is listing it as "out of stock"...might be, or might be discontinued, don't know.
I've read that the Sony Classics line has been pulled from all retailers (hopefully only temporarily) as they lost their distributor Genius Entertainment. Those inlude Gojira, Godzilla Raids Again, Mothra vs. Godzilla, Ghidora the Three-Headed Monster, Invasion of the Astro-Monster (Monster Zero), All Monsters Attack (Godzilla's Revenge), Terrror of MechaGodzilla, and the double-release of Rodan/War of the Gargantuas.
I'm still way behind on getting many of these.
I'm still way behind on getting most of these.
Rebirth of Mothra 3 is planned for release, as the first to have already been available.
Message from Space is from Toei (had to look that one up!) and is still not on R1 DVD.

This time wikipedia is mostly correct, although I have seen mention of the daikaiju referred to as Maguma rather than Magma. He is rather comical in appearance.

Varan suffers a little for essentially being a TV rehash of Godzilla, but it's vastly underrated. I consider it one of my favorite daikaiu films.
It's also too bad Frankenstein Conquers The World/Vs. Baragon isn't held by the same US distributors as War Of The Gargantuas. It would be great to have the sequel with the original.

Battle in Outer Space was released in 1959, long before any starwars movie was.
The first cover does look best
