View Full Version : Can you still gear 1cell by motor temp?
gndprx 05-14-2009, 12:14 PM With the lack of voltage, I'm finding that no matter where I gear my 13.5 at with a 1cell, it never goes above about 105deg.
I kept gearing down (84/64 at last test) and it still stayed cool but dumped the pack much faster without much real gain in lap times.
So with only 3.7-4.2v, does gearing by temp go right out the window now?
Racin'Jason 8 05-14-2009, 01:25 PM Always gear by lap times. If your lap times do not react to gearing changes, then you need to work on the car.
hobbyten 05-14-2009, 03:26 PM i don't think you can gear by heat. i was way overgeared at a race and the motor still didn't get hot but it died in the corner. i went from a 4.50 rollout to a 4.00 and what a difference in pull and still only 110 degrees with both gearing setups.
Team T2C 05-14-2009, 04:26 PM ok this may sound odd, To get close I "listen for the sound" then Look at lap times.
The sound is a distinct wyne the BL motors make when they are close. Ok I know everyone is going to laugh at me. but i hear it.
Team T2C 05-14-2009, 04:48 PM well there is a "happy sound" these brushless motor make and recenetly i have been hearing it. so it is there. Must be the go karter in me.
hobbyten 05-14-2009, 05:05 PM i've really noticed it with the one cell for some reason but yes it does make a different sound when it's geared right.
gndprx 05-14-2009, 05:09 PM So it sounds like motor temp is no longer a tuning tool when dealing with single cell.
Good to know. I kept going to satisfy my own curiosity. I'll back off and start searching for the sweet spot...maybe even by ear :)

yup that is what i am hearing too:thumbsup: I think it is great because if you listen for it. you can get close without walking around asking everyone. then just watch you lap times.
casper60 05-14-2009, 11:26 PM I have to agree with that. I have noticed the same thing with my motors...
But to answer the question, I don't think temp is a good benchmark anymore. I tried going that direction initially and found temps to be higher and lower, depending on the motor, than what I would have normally shot for.
lumberjak 05-15-2009, 08:42 AM Well, it sounds like we gear by heat to get close, then by lap times 'till it makes happy sounds.

SMROCKET 05-19-2009, 02:42 PM I would agree that the BL motors make a sweet whining sound when geared correctly like an old mod motors use to do when they were wound up .... I think 1 cell is a little harder to get the correct gearing on .... The speedo is a great way to tune the motor with Boost or profiles..
The TEKIN team guys have a great tool to use .... they can do 1 degree changes nd dont have to change gears and pinoion to get desired results ... May have to come clean with cash to get one to run ... Alot of TEAM TEKIN guys run wekly where I go to test .....

lumberjak 05-23-2009, 01:54 PM I've been able to get to about 95 f. for a "ball park" rollout, then fine tuned for lap times AND battery drain. That gave me that "happy sound" in about the top 1/3rd of the staits, but bogs bad in the turnes. I've used about 1850ma's to 2175ma's depending on how many "damit's in the run.
gndprx 06-01-2009, 11:59 AM I'm still sitting around 94/64 gearing on 2.4 spec caps at The Grove. I'll have to fine tune once I get my permanent body in place. Temps hover around 105.
Since we're wide open all the time with no lift, the sound changes a bit coming out of 1/2 which is the tight section of a banked tri-oval but stays pretty quiet the rest of the track. Still fine tuning the chassis as well, so lots of variables right now.
