View Full Version : Hpi Mufflers In Stock At Tower ScottH 05-13-2009, 06:40 PM Get 'em while they are hot! http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXN374&P=7 COYOTE 05-16-2009, 07:55 PM Outlaw 250, or the Capped Tire Nats, or both ???? Which one or both for you guys? I can't make them both, and the Outlaw is a GASCAR points series race, so I am headed to Easley on June 27-28. Just wanted to know what's up for the rest of you. Sam32 05-17-2009, 11:21 PM Tim, since Easley is my home track now, and since me and Pop will be the .09 representatives at the Mason/Dixon race, I will be running both. Also, since we're on an HPI muffler thread, I have a question. I know that we can run the HPI muffler with or without a baffle, but can we open up the baffle a bit and run a modified baffle? Thanks Sam ScottH 05-17-2009, 11:44 PM I would think that as long as the only change was increasing the hole size, no big deal. BUT if you went so far as to modify it in such a mnner as to create and echo chamber making a sort of tuned pipe, then no. Tim will clarify I am sure. COYOTE 05-18-2009, 12:07 AM Sam, That issue has been discussed numerous times, and the answers are just as varied. My stance on the HPI muffler has been to run it with the baffle in place, because that is the way it comes from the manufacturer. In essence, the baffle creates back pressure, and produces more power....such as a tuned pipe would do, but not to the same extent. Racers have even gone as far as putting steel wool inside the Associated muffler to create such back pressure. The increase in power is minimal if any. I ran my HPI muffler with an enlarged hole in the baffle, and I didnt notice any increase in power. I didn't dyno it, so I cant tell for sure. The point is, it is an on-going debate, so to make it more competitive with the Associated muffler, I changed the rule to run it without the baffle, just because the Associated muffler has no baffle. On the flip side, adding a pressure nipple to a muffler is a functional thing, but changing the baffle, is actually modifying the muffler, and is a performance thing. Not everyone can have the baffle exactly the same if a racer changes the baffle. To make a short story long.........remove the baffle entirely. Thanks for your question, Tim kevina250 05-18-2009, 10:10 PM Outlaw 250, or the Capped Tire Nats, or both ???? Which one or both for you guys? I can't make them both, and the Outlaw is a GASCAR points series race, so I am headed to Easley on June 27-28. Just wanted to know what's up for the rest of you. Will try to do both here. Depends on time and money now. Kevin Sam32 05-18-2009, 11:00 PM Tim, is it still legal to run the HPI muffler with the stock baffle? As of right now I'm not happy with the consistency of the engine with the HPI versus the Associated, and I'm wanting to try something different with it. COYOTE 05-19-2009, 12:08 AM Sam, You can run the HPI muffler with the baffle in place, or without it, you just can't alter the baffle. That would be modifying for performance. The muffler is subject to tech inspection, so altering it is not advisable. Sam32 05-19-2009, 12:49 AM 10-4, thanks for answering my questions, Tim. I figure its better to ask and find out now than find out during tech! I'm still partial to the Associated muffler right now, though, but I think the HPI is worth more testing. COYOTE 05-19-2009, 03:51 PM Sam, I have run the Associated muffler, the HPI muffler, and the OS 761 muffler, and I can't tell a dimes worth of difference between them..... although I like the sound of the OS muffler........LOL. The OS muffler is smaller and lighter, but more difficult to fit onto the KSG and Hyperdrive cars because of the space on the rear pod. It will fit on the Coyote, with a minimal amount of work. vBulletin® v3.8.7, Copyright ©2000-2012, vBulletin Solutions, Inc.
