...from TOS, any of the movies? The visual and sound changes a bit in each incarnation. I liked the effect in TWOK, the characters were actually moving/talking during transport. The worst had to be in TMP.

I still really like the TOS effect. Some of the later series and movies looked too much like a light show. I also really like the new, swirling effect in the film. Nicely done.

The Transporter Effect in the Original Series is still the best(IMHO)

However, I did like the new film's spin on it..Very well done.

Generally speaking, I like the TOS look and sound the best. TMP had a nice look with the "annular confinement" laser-looking beam around it - the sound wasn't bad either. I liked the TNG transporter effect until the TNG era movies started - after that it just got muddled. I like the others in varying degrees, but I guess I'm just old fashioned about what I like.

I'm in the same boat, TOS was the best, the new film is pretty cool too.

My favorite is the old TOS style. But, next is the new film style. Very cool!

My favorite is still the original series. I never really cared for the lens flares, strobe lights and intersecting lines from the other incarnations. The first film seemed "flowery" and rather monochromatic.

Of course, we all chuckled at the "tasmanian" transporter effect from the new film. All that was missing was the "wind up" sound effect and the wild shreaking with the arms and legs shooting out from the sides. :)

For me, it was probably Wrath of Khan and Voyager. They were stylistically similar, now that I think of it. Search for Spock fell into the same category, IIRC.

I like the original and TMP--the Khan and later movie effects all seemed very "animated" and unconvincing to me. I do think the new one is an interesting take...

Don't judge me as a hater overall, but I do hate the current film effect. It looks too goofy.

TNG looks the cleanest, and I suppose more believable because of it.

The glitter effect used in Trek TOS is the best. A lap dissolve, a hand-drawn roto-matte, and aluminum dust falling though a high-intensity light beam. Simple and sweet.I liked the effect in TWOK, the characters were actually moving/talking during transport. The concept behind the transporter is that matter is converted to energy, beamed to a selected point, and then re-constituted. (I know there are various explanations that contradict this premise, saying no actual energy-matter conversion is involved, and so on.) However it works, physical objects are insubstantial while being transported. So the idea of characters having a conversation during transport is highly illogical. What, exactly, is speaking? Their brainwave patterns? Their souls?

I like the STTMP transporter effect when it did not work properly and people were killed.
Made me think for the first time that they had this flawless technology that sometimes was flawed, and with disasterous results.

I liked the effect from STII, I liked how the converging energy beams deconstruct and reconstruct the personnel who are beaming. I hated the TMP version. I call it "The '60's Hippie Flower Power Transporter"

Lol..and here I thought I was going to be the only one that thought the TOS
transporter effect was the best...the rest were too overdone, imo..

I think the TOS effect was too 2 dimensional looking. For a favorite Transporter effect; there are certainly a lot to choose from. I like the effect from First Contact the best. And just for it only being used once, I also like the Klingon Transporter effect from "The Day of the Dove".

Tell me this is from Mad Magazine. I think I had that issue back in the day...Of course it's from Mad. Mort Drucker's caricatures are unmistakable.

Here's a link to the whole article from 1967: Star Blecch (http://www.startrekanimated.com/mad_main.html)

It's actually a pretty silly and juvenile spoof -- not really a satire at all. I don't think whoever wrote the piece actually watched the show more than once.

That said, the transporter effects in the new Star Trek film are actually my second favorite. My favorite is from the Original Series--if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I also think the original one was the best, and quite original, effect. I was mystified for years about how it had been accomplished. I thought it was very ingenious. Some of the later effects had extra stuff I felt was unnecessary. Do the atoms start swirling due to advances in technology? I don't see the point. The more glowy effects make me wonder what the superfluous energy is doing.

Oh yeah......I don't ever remember seeing the original transporter fail. It was very reliable. The first time they changed it in STTMP resulted in deaths immediately.

Oh yeah......I don't ever remember seeing the original transporter fail. It was very reliable.Except when it split Kirk into a good and an evil twin in "The Enemy Within," or when it swept Kirk & Co. into an alternate universe in "Mirror, Mirror." Seems the transporter, as reliable as it usually was, was sensitive to strange metallic ores and ion storms.

There were NO fatalities in either of those. ST:TMP showed the people in pain right before they died when it failed.

The Enemy Within ended up giving us two of the Shat's unforgettable performances: The Crybaby and the Nut!

I would say TOS, even though it was always 'losing lock' just when they needed it the most. With Scotty manually pulling those slides in some way that was important.

What did they say in Galaxy Quest; "More magic than science".

The deaths of Mr. Sonak and the female (who, according to the novelization, was Kirk's love on Earth, also an Admiral) only happened when Mr. Cleary, who was installing a new backup sensor, caused something to short out while transport was happening. Actually, Chief Rand shouldn't have started using the transporter until Cleary was finished.

She should have been court-martialed!

Yeah, I'd have to go with the original effect.

Re: the effect in Trek XI, one critic wrote...

Not being a Trekkie, I didn’t particularly mind how (Abrams) refashioned the gizmos, but it was still surprising to learn that, when beaming down to planets and up to the ship, the crew members no longer vanish with the old granular shiver but, instead, whip around and around, aided by cartoonish whirling strokes, as if planning to reconstitute themselves as fruit smoothies at the other end.
