View Full Version : When Oval was KING
ScottH 05-06-2009, 10:21 PM Some of you guys were not fortunate enough to have been around during this time. I believe this is the ROAR OVAL NATS 1990 held at the Peachbowl.
Jerry had these pictures, he NEVER throws anything away, you guys should see some of the stuff he has, but that is another thread.
And you guys thought that all the tales of 400+ RACERS (not entries) were tales of myth. This was a time when you waited on RC Car Action or Competition Plus to come out with the flyer, fill it out, WITH A PEN AND MAIL IT IN. Yes with a stamp! And you hoped you got in.
Enjoy. :D

JONW1020 05-06-2009, 10:28 PM Scott great pictures, wish I would have started racing back then. I love to see these old pics. Keep them comming
Team T2C 05-06-2009, 10:38 PM i remember them.

Don't you start you troublemaker!! :p
And it was an Honor to make the C or D main!
I will get Jerry to look through his stuff to find some more.
You guys notice the HUGE Factory trailers? Man those days were great!

Hey, that is my name Trouble maker. LOL I just call like i see it. that is all. if that is trouble making, darn it..... I just cant have that follow mentiality! DARN you MOM and DAD. LOL
Here is the Two2cool Rig!, it has been sitting for two years! Brhodes says it is alittle overkill for RC racing
Scott
I was at that race. Cap tires for sure. I remember sitting in the motel room all night, sticking pins in the caps to balance them LoL !!
casper60 05-06-2009, 11:49 PM Hmmm, I have a car that will fit in that trailer very nicely... :p
killerkoncepts 05-06-2009, 11:54 PM used to race go-karts out of a rig similar to that!
ScottH 05-06-2009, 11:57 PM OH MAN!!! I forgot about the Pin-Balancing, what a pain!!
Then we discovered a Golf shop and started using lead tape.
Team T2C 05-07-2009, 12:50 AM used to race go-karts out of a rig similar to that!
if it was dirt oval, i would not doubt you at all. 10 karts hanging on the walls depending on what the track conditions are.
No, Jody and Tod just showed up like that to intimidate the competition............ He
needed more duct tape by the time he was done racing because they would all take him
out because he was showing off!!!!! LOL Not to worry Jody, I was in the same boat at
one time but they took me out because I was running a motor from your brother.... LOL
bluelineracer 05-07-2009, 09:10 AM Jody was probably just cherry-picking the purple plate class.
j/k.....Miller Racing boys were a tough bunch....like the Hatfields to us McCoys.

98Ron 05-07-2009, 09:22 AM Team T2C, not wanting to be too much of a smart ***, but back then we had 4 classes.
I was at both events and we had 10th and 12th stock and Mod.

I was at both events and we had 10th and 12th stock and Mod.
I was going to say, I never went to, or even read about a SINGLE race from "Back in the Day" that only had 2 classes.
ALL had at least 4, a lot 5, and some 6 or more.
Ron is correct, both 1/12 and 10th made 4 classes, and the early Paved Oval Races I was at also had the cross over from the GEAR BOX cars, so there was a Gear Box class, which quickly adopted pan car style front ends, and rear gear boxes off the DOMINATOR or even some stealth type RC10 trannys, usually turned around backwards.
This novel concept of only 2 classes, I believe is just make believe in somebodys mind.
(....although I think that since there was only really TWO power plant options, they confuse that with only having 2 classes.)
Everything ran either a STOCK or a MODIFIED classification motor....if it wasn't a STOCK MOTOR, it was therefore a MODIFIED motor.
98Ron 05-07-2009, 11:30 AM As to the honor to be in a C or D, hell ya, I remember back in I believe 90 or 91 at the PeachBowl, I placed 4th in the "R" main in 10th scale stock. my second ever 10th scale race.
I was a fun track, amoung many that have been plowed under over the years.
Todd Putnam 05-07-2009, 12:38 PM Scott,
Yes, that was in fact the ROAR Oval Nats from the Peachbowl in 1990. That was the first ever National event I attended.
You can still attend oval races today with 450+ entries, except now they are on dirt. Check out the US Open Wheel Champs.
Keep the old pictures coming! Love 'em...
nitro4294 05-07-2009, 12:52 PM Man, reading this and those pics make me feel old. Never made it to any RAOR races back then, but did race twice at the tri oval in Matoon IL. I believe it was like 93 or 94. Felt like I had won when I got that 2nd place trophy in the C main.
I would love to be able to do that kind of racing again, just can't fit it into the budget. (I was single and lived at home with the folks back then, NO BILLS)
Great pics, keep them coming please.
katf1sh 05-07-2009, 01:43 PM the indoor pic you can see the bud man..i was pitting right next to him...team twister was represented by that one hit wonder guy who bought a motor at whip off the shelf and dominated the big boys..those were the days.
Gary McAllister 05-07-2009, 02:12 PM katf1sh-
I was pitted back by the Pepsi machine. Doe's anybody remember that ROAR and other big races from the 80s used to give out hat pins to all the entries? I have a hat on the shelf that weighs a ton from all the Nationals hat pins I collected. It should be in an RC museum...if there was one. lol
Gary McAllister.....the older I get, the faster I was!
VA.RACER 05-07-2009, 03:40 PM I think the 1992 Roar Nats was in King NC.
spdway rcr 03 05-07-2009, 06:40 PM i lived 10 mins from the peach bowl it opened up in fall of 1987 and when i was not in school i was there raced there many years --i drive past the lot every day-- its now a church but the track is still there -- the owner filled it up with dirt due to the kids were always practicing on it with there cars --- the local police said the other day that-- when the track closed -- teenage trouble makers and teen age crime went up 55% wow wished someone would have stepped up i still have my first car and body that my late grandaddy bought me wouldnt sell it for the world i remember he would sit in a folding chair lap after lap hour after hour -- man those were the days:(
DOUGHBOY 05-07-2009, 06:58 PM Wow Ron Your On Fire Today.... I Like It!!!!!

ok but again two classes. different scales. But i beleive everyone got the point. I do not remember a gearbox car at the nats back then. I could be wrong, but the point still stands.
also there was what one real battery manufacture and another trying to get in.
oh well, pick pieces at the comment. it was just a point.
Mike Clark 05-07-2009, 07:39 PM i remember them.

That's all you need Stock & Modified 1/12 & 1/10 scale. Sub C Batterys 1300 SCR's The red ones. It was the same back then as it is today, you had to know your batterys. Don't get me started on electric racing today.
The blue flat tarp it's mine.
Here is a little foot note, where you see all the people pitting indoors, well underneath those racers is a concrete oval track for winter racing. Back in the day Bolink had some real good products as well as excellant drivers.
Mike Clark 05-07-2009, 07:42 PM These pictures were taken long before the RC10 found its way onto the concrete oval. We were still tearing up the dirt ovals with them.
Mike Clark 05-07-2009, 07:45 PM I believe this was a Regional Championship race not a National.

Mike Clark 05-07-2009, 07:57 PM The Daytona of electric Racing. May God Bless ole Bob.
ScottH 05-07-2009, 09:36 PM The reason I thought those pics were from the 1990 ROAR Oval Nats is that is what most of the "Race Shirts" were that I could identify.
Mike Clark 05-07-2009, 09:53 PM Well I'll need to plead the fifth, I really can't see any one other than Old David Wilson from Jackson Ms in the pictures. We attended so many racers at the Peach Bowl.

swtour 05-07-2009, 11:35 PM If DETAILED correctly...and people would GO, Shawn's track in PA has the potential to be EVERY BIT as good or BETTER than some of the tracks of YESTERYEAR!
Gary McAllister 05-07-2009, 11:55 PM Hey Mike-
I was at that Nationals in Birmingham too. I was rooming with Tyree Philips there.
Nice shots of Whippoorrwill...I have tons of video from those early races at the Whip, Peach Bowl and King....Sure do miss Bob and his "World center of Speed". (remember that sign over the entry?)
Those pictures were mostly shot from the VIP booth in turn 4. I practically lived in there since it was air conditioned. The humidity and bugs almost killed me. I still have my key to the VIP booth. That's another keeper for the RC museum someday.
Here's a blast from the past...I used to carry two big trunks on the plane when traveling around the country for races in the 80s...pull up to the curb at the airport, give the Sky Cap a few bucks, away went the trunks (way over weight) no big deal, no hassels! That'll never happen again!!!!

You mean they didn't call you back to the ticket counter after you were already through security just to tell you they had to toss your paragon! LOL. I've flown about 10 times with my stuff in the last 2 years. Interestingly they let all my stuff through at the major airports (especially Logan where 911 started), but they're dicks at the little airports. Gotta love Greenbay Wi, and Omaha, NE. Just in case the somone is looking to blow up Lambeau or the Huskers LOL.

Give us some time, I only remember these tracks. so I look to build something like those. That is what i liked and that is my template. we just ended up with about 20 extra feet of width. which should even make for better racing.
Let see, Got to get a few "big names " out to see and believe.
 Looking forward to it. We have the ability to park about 500 people. As it grows we will add to it.
tats31 05-09-2009, 12:18 PM ya know its funny but ppl grip about the price to race oval but i spend no more now at 34 then my father and I spent 21 years ago. I never raced tracks like the whip but my father brought a few vidios home ove the years to encourge me to try harder. Now I love it just in kentucky we can never keep a track
Porksalot4L 05-09-2009, 02:21 PM Cool post some of the videos for everyone to see! we would love that!

C43GO 05-09-2009, 04:44 PM some videos would be cool
ScottH 05-09-2009, 10:17 PM There are a couple on HT that Hank has posted. Some of the Whip and I think and enduro. Jerry probably has some, I know he does of Springcove. I will see about getting them burned to DVD and posting them.
Porksalot4L 05-09-2009, 11:54 PM yes the more videos the better! anyone have video of the old "kn" days also? theres got to be someone!
Team T2C 05-10-2009, 12:25 AM here is what we hope to build into a great concrete oval again. Please keep in mind we are no where being complete.
here is some video of the smoothest Concrete track ever created. i would bet it would rank as one of the smoothest carpet tracks too.
This is 21.5 first day on it with 40-50 MPH winds. We had a extreme wind advisory today. But those that stop out to run some laps. Thank you!!!
Also Just a note: the walls in turn 2 3 and 4 were not in place when this video is being made. they are there not painted and not in place. But they are so far away that it didnt affect them from testing at the track. they are removable for access to the track and building. Race day they are moved in to place.

bud3738 05-10-2009, 09:38 PM Can we please cut back on the neone orange lifegaurd swimsuits beeing worn...
ScottH 05-10-2009, 10:38 PM So the opening right before the building will be closed up for racing, correct?
swtour 05-11-2009, 12:29 AM What's the matter Scott, make you nervous just watching IT? lol
matt_s86 05-11-2009, 01:15 AM So the opening right before the building will be closed up for racing, correct?
Don't want any of this:

ScottH 05-11-2009, 07:29 AM What's the matter Scott, make you nervous just watching IT? lol
Ooops I drifted a little wide out of two, oh well I will let it go to the wall and... BAM!!!! Hey anybody got a spare car?
Yeah that opening is a little disturbing.
If that 21.5 was going that wide on the straights (which I had thought the cars would drift out there once the speeds were up) imagine what a hotter motor, modified or Nitro car is going to do.
VERY COOL TRACK THOUGH!!
Team T2C 05-11-2009, 07:35 AM Yes, those walls that are not painted are moved into place when racing is conducted.
Also that were working on getting the push out of the car. i do not believe you will see them much higher then the half way point once the cars are tuned in. This was the first time Rhodes was on concrete in like 14 years. So do not take this as a perfect run. Also as you can hear we had a massive wind storm that day. not sure how much that affected the cars. 40-50 MPH winds.
Looking at some other Video It is an optical illusion, in the video on the back it shows that car is about 6 ft off that wall.
