Took a couple of hours once I got the idea to have a go at it.

Here's what I won fairly cheaply. Needs a major overhaul.

After dismantling there was an immediate problem. And no part replacement available. So we go for Plan B... and just glue it together as much as possible.

Primed.

And painted silver as I still don't know how to chrome it yet.

The internal parts are many.

Doors, bonnet and bootlid were the easiest to paint.

Primed and painted white.

to be continued.

heya 69Stang,

the Corgi brand began in England and very popular worldwide. The company is more than 60yo... Corgi has some very nice Mustang's too, one of them is the Fastback 2+2 which came in many colors, opening doors and tilting front seats.

Duh! I never read the tittle telling me what it was! I just knew that I could not place the casting at all. Thanks for the post, or I would still have not known!:p I have GOT to start reading better!

I do think you did a great job on the restoration!

a wee bit of an update. my donor mini has arrived from Holland. This be a Solido Corgi Mini Cooper. They don't make diecast like they used to... whilst popping the rivets the chassis of this modern diecast was so porous it fell apart in several chunky pieces.

The rear and front bumper was connected as one piece, not much suspension here. I'm thinking of using the wheels and tires.

The #282 is popped open again and the original silver frame broke again.

As I don't really like the panda color on this car and its going to be modified anyway I'm thinking of giving it a complete overhaul. It will take a little longer to paint all individual parts but the results will be more pleasing to the eye, especially as this model has a lot of opening features.

So its gonna get another dunk in the paintstrip department... I think I'll make another post once this project gets going.

Now for the donor Mini... why the sacrifice??? I already have two versions of this modern Mini Cooper. One is racing green with a box, the other was loose, came in a vacuumwrap only. The donor Mini had damage already and came with the yellow/blue Solido/Corgi box. Simple swap for the better car.
As the body and parts are still good there's another mod I'd like to try out. In the 1990s a car enthusiast made a very special mini for his car sales company.

Its similar to this one.

Not sure what happened to the NZ mini limo...

Nice job on your original restoration. I love old Minis, especially if they are done in a racing theme. Also looking forward to what you'll be doing to it now. Thanks for the pics!

Always liked the Rally version in red with white roof. Which was initially what I wanted to do in the first place.

There are three other Minis I need to repaint, and four Police vans to convert, not to mention the Traveler to clean up and restore.

In a matter of two months I've quadrupled my Corgi Mini collection.

Now why did they make so many different molds??? I received an original Austin Seven Mini a couple of days ago I won on eBay and it has the solid wheel casts from the fifties/early sixties - as we know the Mini first appeared in 1959. The chassis on this Mini is quite unique - yet the Morris Mini casts are slightly different.

That reminds me... was there ever a Riley Elf or Wolseley Hornet in the Corgi stables???

So cool a MINI with factory opening wings and bonnet. I like the rally look myself but a really nice paint job will look good too. There was a guy, Jack Baumgardner, who used to race SCCA don't know if he still does or not. He campaigned a MINI very successfully for over 25 years. Nice little car. Red with a checkerboard top. Since the bonnet opens paint the engine valve cover Austin Healy green. Kind of a metallic avacado green, but leave the induction system chrome. If your interested in replicating this car I've got a painting I did of it back in the early '70's before he made major modifications to the body. I think he made those after trashing it into the bank gonig into the esses at Road Atlanta the last year they had the SCCA run-offs there. Now it has widened fenders and bigger tires. Suppose so he won't be trashin' anymore banks.

Hi CH, a pic would be welcome here of that painting of yours. Dinky Toys also had a Mini with opening features.

You'll have to excuse the photo quality as well as the painting. I think this wa my second airbrush ever. I've got a bit better at it now.

This was somewhere around the '74-'78 Chimney Rock Hill Climb. Probably closer to '74, as Jack was still using silver Duck Tape for his number.

This was also close to the time that the streaker in the Radio Flyer made his infamous run through turn five....OR it could have been the year that the "Barney Fife" cop pulled the gun on the guy smoking pot and was shouted down by everyone at turn five. OR it could have been the year that the "Out Laws" motor cycle club got plastered and rolled off the hill into on coming traffic coming up turn five........Oh wait... That was every year until the big shoot-out somewhere around Charlotte. They didn't come back after that. Yep! yep yep...Turn five was the place to be at the Hill Climb.
