View Full Version : Screechey S' Cool Bus
Peacefield 05-02-2009, 10:36 AM Just received a new S'Cool Bus. I'm getting a lot of screeching from the chassis (happens even without the body on). The gears are clearly lubed, I've oiled it, but it sounds pretty bad. Any idea of what I should check for?
Thanks.
NTxSlotCars 05-02-2009, 10:53 AM It's the brakes.
Did you oil the axles? How's the gear mesh? Any slop on the rear gear? Did you oil under the arm pinion gear?
LeeRoy98 05-02-2009, 12:22 PM A tiny drop of oil on the end of the arm shaft? That is usually the source for "screeching" on my pancake cars.

resinmonger 05-02-2009, 12:41 PM Yes, oil the armature shaft you must. Little oil you should use. Squeal like a pig out of the box until oiled most pancakes do. Like Ned Beatty they are! To Degoba to learn the ways of the Force you must go.

DL makes a really good point...."It's not ALWAYS the bottom of the arm shaft"
(most of the time it is)
Sometimes it's the top of the arm shaft, the pinion shaft, or the rear axles! I've even had front axles make an interesting noise.
Got oil?
Peacefield 05-02-2009, 05:25 PM First of all, thanks for all the quick responses.
Well, I completely disassembled it, oiled pretty much everything that moves, put it back together and still the same. Interestingly, holding the rear wheels up, the car sounds like a champ. It's only when it's running around the track. I checked and clearance is fine. What could it be?

So the car sounds fine under no load (wheels free to spin) and screeches when the wheels are on the track. You've oiled the usual suspects. My guess would be the driven gear/pinion gear assembly shaft is loose and allowinh the gear assembly to misalign under load.
The gear assembly I am referring to is the last one on the gear plate and the lower portion engages the crown gear on the rear axle. THis is attached to the gear plate with a long rivit. Take the gear plate off and see if this gear can be moved upwards or from side-to-side. If so, you can tighten it by gently tapping an a smallt phillips head or other pointed shaft into the open end of the rivit. Patience is required here as the gear assembly will bind if you over-tighten the rivit. This was always a potential problem on AFX and Magnatraction cars in either standard or 4-gear form. AW and JL cars have the same weakness as the original design they're copied from.

slotcarman12078 05-02-2009, 07:11 PM Ya know, it sounds to me like the slot pin is squeaking.. a light sanding or trimming might eliminate you sweeeeeeaaak!! I have to do this all the time, especially with the extra long RRR T Jet pins and the AW flag guides. My track is L&J MM track and the newer pins are kinda too long...
grungerockjeepe 05-02-2009, 10:44 PM What track are you using, Peace? The blade is too long for Tyco and LL type track, you'll either have to swap for the pin-type guide or do like I did and snip a little off then bevel it with a file. Front wheels prolly arent even touching the track.
NTxSlotCars 05-02-2009, 10:58 PM Sounds like a slot pin to me too.
Did you oil the front axle on the bus body?
If all else fails, it must be one of the kids in the back seat.

Peacefield 05-03-2009, 07:47 AM Yup, the guide pin. How could I not have seen/thought of that myself.
Thanks, guys!
Before you shave that guide pin down, just swap it out with one of the double-sided pins. Just use the pin side.
