Today I helped my mom take her dog to the vet as he is old and not walking straight. For some reason I wondered if a dog was for me. I looked through the CL for puppies and other dogs that need to be rescued. I did not email, send a message, post a link, or anything other than look through CL and I now, 3 hours later have spam for puppies from CL. LOOK OUT!

CL is Craig's List...free auction listing site. Generally, I've had good luck there buying from both out of town and locally. BUT!! there are some shady dealers on the site

I go on craigs list everyday, no problem. You probaby have some type of malware tracking coookies on your computer. Clear out the cache and scan with a program like adaware from lavasoft.

I have a hotmail address for that.
I got sick of the viagra/brides from russia/fake rolex's/fake diplomas spam emails.

I mean, just because i now own 25 Genuine imitation Rolexs that i wear to my yearly reuinions at MIT, UCLA/(Insert 5 more American Univercities here please. I am an Aussie, i dont know many American Unis) to match the 30+ Masters Degrees i got in my 2 weeks in the USA, and showing off Svetlana, who i married for love from Moscow, whilst popping viagra............

I get 30+ spam emails a day, and i cannot filter it out, and my ISP can not help me, so i dont use that account much.

Hotmail helps me moreso, and it is easier for me, to see the real emails that are important.

My 2 cents

I didn't think spam was good for puppies. It's not good for humans either but it's tasty when fried up to be crispy around the edges and served with a little mustard.

Like others said, get a free GMail/Yahoo/Hotmail email account and use it as your public facing email account. Gmail's spam blocking is nearly flawless based on my years of using it. It throws all the spam in a folder that you can look at if you really want to. You can read your GMail from any browser and it will integrate into your iGoogle home page if you use that. If you have more than one email account and want all your email accounts to show up in one organized, logical tool, consider using the free Thunderbird email tool from Mozilla. Thunderbird works with your ISP provided email, Yahoo mail, Hotmail, Gmail, and many others. Thunderbird has a rich plug-in model much like Firefox. If you like Firefox and its indispensable add-ons and plug-ins like Adblock Plus, Auto Pager, and Cooliris you will like Thunderbird. (Sidenote: Firefox has quite a few add-ons specifically for E-Bay and Craigslist users. I don't know how good they are but they are all free and easy to try.)

I'd avoid using Outlook Express, the free email tool that comes with Windows. When it comes to spam, virus, and security vulnerabilities, Outlook Express is number one in its class.

I don't have problems with CL when looking to buy. However, I do wedding photography and promote my business on that site and the amount of spam that generates is considerable and seems to be increasing. And the spam is stupid; almost unintelligable. Can't imagine what if anything they're trying to sell or who's buying. Sheeesh.

I concur. You should also try the free versions of these:

http://www.malwarebytes.org/

Free anti-virus:

http://www.avast.com/

I work in Information Services and these have been the best tools I've found. You can spend hundreds and not be as well protected.

Yeah, I like Avast too although its user interface is a bit odd.

If you are looking for excellent quality freeware, this site is an great resource with lots of feedback and evaluations of what is available:

Based on my experience, the top rated free products are as good as any commercial software you can buy. Outside of hardcore games and niche products, there is almost nothing that you cannot find for free while giving up little or nothing in quality add features versus expensive commercial applications.

I get junk mail everyday from the nkba
(national kitchen and bath association) because I am a certified kitchen designer through them.
No other junk mail. every time you enter your emails to sign on to anything, you take a chance that someone is going to sell your email to someone else, then its a lanslide of junk.
Just say no..........and I have had good luck with Craigs List too.

Youd love it here in Oregon then. Even the seediest redneck dives have 25 microbrews on tap!
