Here are a few pictures of my 1/144 MWM. This is going in a farmhouse diorama that I am working on. It is lit by 6 super brite 3mm green LEDs. Some trimming and sanding was required for the LEDs to fit inside. The projectors on the bottom (3 round disks) were drilled out, covered in frosted clear styrene, and lit with an LED for each. The cobra has a channel carved out for a FO to light the eye. I'll get pics of that later as it is such a small piece and not done yet. All the clear pieces were frosted with Testors Dullcoat. Light diffusion looks real good so far.

The diorama will include an N scale farmhouse and a crashed "meteor" that will be lit from underneath.

Geino, think you could make a clear resin MWM "meteor" about the size of a flattened egg?

Enjoy the pics.

Nice work so far, but consider running the wire down your support post, that way you have less holes in your kit.

The hole for the post is going to be filled and puttied over. The area where the wires exit will be touching the top edge of the tree, along with a thin support rod. This is on the back side of the viewing angle so it will not be noticable and will be integrated into a tree branch.

Rob here is pictures of the Martian ship in a crater. Before final casting I would add the inlay peice to the top of the ship.

Rob here are the 3 egg shaped blobs. All 3 are different sizes. Also please note none are smooth. I left some of the indentations on it to create the semi organic feel to them.

I like them! The meteor with the ship inside is nice. For the solid meteor I like the larger teardrop shape the best!

I will finish fine tuning the larger one and then create a mold for it.

I will also continue tooling the crater version with the ship inside, and post a few revised pictures next week.

Sounds great. Again, thanks for doing these for me. It's going to a kick arse diorama!

Rob I should have the mold finished and the red resin poured this weekend. Pictures will be posted of the finished one as soon as it is cured.

Sounds great. Looking forward to pics. Have not done much more with my kit other than glueing the hulls together and puttying the seam. I tested the fiber optic in the cobra head and it looks good. I have to finish a J2 by the 30th. After that I will finish up the this kit.

Nice touch.

Here are the first 2 out of the molds. Note: the first two were made with white resin, not clear. The amount of resin used cause a larger reaction than I expected so there is more bumps on them than there will be on the clear resin final peices. The version with the martian ship in it has 1 defect in the mold that can be corrected with a small drill - the mount for the cobra eye had an air bubble so it did not form properly.

The version with the martian ship I also removed from the mold too soon so it created the "pulled away" effect on the ground, this is NOT on the mold and will not be on the clear versions. I did a quick paint job on this one to see what it would look like. It has Testors enamel copper, and a gray acrylic craft paint.

Due to issues with the molding compound I will only be able to get no more than a dozen or so out of the initial molds before I will have to cast new ones.

I will cast the clear ones this week and post pictures.

I am trying to fix the hole on the one with the ship in it. I will be ready to cast the colored resin this weekend. Pictures will be posted as soon as they are cured.

I got it fixed last night so now you can plug in a cobra eye. I have not cast a copy of the cobra eye so you will need to take one from the kit.

are you doing one clear so it can be illuminated? Or is it just the non ship meteor your doing in clear?

Both "blobs" will be done in either clear or transparent red to enable lighting from below. You will need to paint the ship to prevent it from lighting up. I will do my best to limit the number of air bubbles in the casting. I am still trying to find a new pressure pot.

Here are the small ones. One is done in the near clear resin and the other is dyed red.

Neither is perfectly smooth. This is 2 reasons - the mold is not perfectly smooth and the resin pulled away creating a couple of semi rough spots.

The pink striping on the red is caused by the red dye. I found out I am using the wrong kind of dye and it creates a "contamination" of the resin. In the case of these it creates an "other worldly" look to them.

Both do have many air bubbles in them which are visible.

The clear one could be painted with sun catcher paint and still be lighted with no problem.

I held both up to a floresent light at my desk to see how they would look back lit.

Here are the large ones. Same information as above regarding the small ones.

The second red one that is shown did not properly cure - the martian ship is a deformed and will require contour putty to smooth it out and the area where the cobra eye is plugged in will need to get cleaned out a bit more. Although it will light just as well as the one in the first picture.

As you can see in the picture the "contamination" will give each one a unique look so no two will be exactly alike.

I am still working on the tanks, I need to strengthen the red dye in them because the keep coming up pink.

They look great. I like the swirly stuff as well. Cant wait to get a set. I'll take both in the red dye versions!

I will try to pour a couple of more tonight/tomarrow morning and you can choose which ones you want.

Dimesions (in inches):
length x width x height
Small 4 3/4 x 3 1/2 x 1
Large 7 x 4 3/4 x 1 1/8
Sizes will vary slightly between individual ones.

Ooh, I think the 7 inch long may be a bit to big for my base. Is it the one with MWM inside? But of course, some will be hidden under the landscape. Oh heck, make one of each in the red resin for me!

Please stick to the thread subject "Model Lighting" :)

Sorry, but these are being created to be lit. They are being created for my lit MWM that my thread here is about. How is that not on topic?

These are being created so he can light them as part of his diorama.

Here is the small ones in red. I also have the tanks in clear red so they can be lighted.

Note: these will be the last tanks out of the current molds, the body mold has begun to tear so I need to cast new molds.

Letter C has very little contamination in it.

These ones are
4 3/4 x 3 1/2 x 1

Here are the first 3 large ones in red.

These ones are
7 x 4 3/4 x 1 1/8

Here are the next two in clear red. Note: the last one, Letter E cast with nearly no contamination.

These ones are
7 x 4 3/4 x 1 1/8

Geino, I'll take "D" in the large size and "A" in the small size. If no one wants "C" in the small size I'll take it as well.

geino
06-02-2009, 01:39 PM
Note on the large ones:
A - Very little to no work will be required before painting the ship
B - A little bit of contour putty will be required to the top of the ship before painting
C - Some work with countour putty will be required to the top of the ship before painting.
D - some work with contour putty will be required to the top of the ship before painting
E - Very little to no work will be required before painting the ship

geino

Note on the small ones:
A - The top is rough, it had very bad air bubble and did not properly form. I removed some of the deformations and it now has a rough texture across that area
B - is smooth with no problems
C - is smooth with no problems
