View Full Version : lesney 74a mobile canteen RVREVO 04-27-2009, 06:40 PM Ok, this be my second post... will add pictures soon RVREVO 04-27-2009, 06:41 PM http://photos.hobbytalk.com/data/508/rvrevo-lesney-74a-mobilecanteen-3fl.JPG and here they are in silver, cream and white. Kind Regards, Richard K gunn 04-27-2009, 06:56 PM man those are cool. would like to find some of those for my diorama. RVREVO 04-27-2009, 07:01 PM heya gunn, got the white and the cream for an unbelievable bargain, almost a week after losing the pinkish-cream version to a US-trader. gunn 04-27-2009, 07:16 PM do the fronts open on them? RVREVO 04-27-2009, 07:17 PM yes. just doesn't stay up. thinking of using a toothpick. SMS88 04-27-2009, 07:22 PM Welcome:wave: its good to have new folks to give us fresh angles on vintage Lesneys:) I have no idea why Lesney thought silver suited this casting when its obvious how fine cream and white look with those red transfers..........I picked up my beater in white for pennies and hope to find good affordable one soon...... But a more important question perhaps should be, which car in which colour looks best towing these, both scale and stylewise??? As a child a good friend used a 7b Ford Anglia to tow his 74a and smashed his yellow 38 Victor estate under a hammer which would have made a better tow car IMHO! gunn 04-27-2009, 07:25 PM thats cool. only old lesney i have is 2 or 3 trains and one kinda large micky mouse in a fire truck. lol and a king car carrier which it is beat up pretty bad . no paint and needs tires. but thats ok im a customizer and i can rebuild it. dragonhead00 04-27-2009, 07:34 PM Those are cool. I had to pass up some lesneys at a swap meet as the seller wanted to sell them as a set and I only wanted a truck and trailer out of the group. I wasn't sure of the value of the cars but he asked for 45 bucks for everything. RVREVO 04-27-2009, 08:12 PM I thought the little old #30A Ford Prefect would suit towing the white canteen. http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn249/RVREVOX3/Toycars/code%203/rvrevo-lesney30Ablue-74Awhite.jpg RVREVO 04-27-2009, 08:14 PM thats cool. only old lesney i have is 2 or 3 trains and one kinda large micky mouse in a fire truck. lol and a king car carrier which it is beat up pretty bad . no paint and needs tires. but thats ok im a customizer and i can rebuild it. Got a Donald Duck Jeep... missing Donald  RVREVO 04-27-2009, 08:15 PM Those are cool. A #38 Victor Estate is on my wishlist at the moment. I keep losing it on auctions. Got a really bad one I converted into a panelwagon as its hatch is missing. And here is the spare Victor that I have reminding me of my first childhood sighting of a Lesney 38 Victor http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e113/SMS369/Morris%20Marina%20TC/2009-Apr013.jpg Guntownal 04-28-2009, 11:10 PM Great pics of some great models. I have a few matchbox trailers in my collection but none of these. Thanks for sharing. RVREVO 04-28-2009, 11:43 PM I just find it incredibly ironic I won two Mobile Canteen's on ebay within a week of each other. One I paid $9 for and the other $25. According to Dana Johnsons value guide theire worth between $300-350. That's a big drop in value, or I was lucky not being outbid... at all SMS88 04-29-2009, 05:48 AM I just find it incredibly ironic I won two Mobile Canteen's on ebay within a week of each other. So there's more playworn models to be had after all... I might yet get it complete. Heya SMS88, swap ya my blue prefect with your Victor Estate??? vwtoysmike 04-29-2009, 01:01 PM Canteen has always been one of my favorites. I like longer wheel base for Tow Car! http://i126.photobucket.com/albums/p97/mpk62/toys/canteen002.jpg http://i126.photobucket.com/albums/p97/mpk62/toys/canteen005.jpg http://i126.photobucket.com/albums/p97/mpk62/toys/canteen003.jpg Lummox 04-29-2009, 01:31 PM Now that's more like it. SMS88's 3.8 6cyl Jag or his 352 c.u. V8 Thunderchicken would have the nuts to tow it in the real world....and prolly AROUND the world! Of course you wouldn't even know it was behind you with the mighty torque of VWMike's 390 V8 powered lonnngg wheel base 1958 Caddy-lac 60 Series Fleetwood. The poor little Prefect would need a push to get it going, then it would loose it's lunch(wagon) all over it self. :) BTW, what in the heck does Prefect mean anyhow??? In Roman times the Prefect was a type of senior regional cop. When I was at school the prefects were senior students with special ties entitled to order the other students about when there were no teachers about.........and the english Ford Prefect had a 1 litre engine, way too small to tow this tea wagon:wave: The 2 door version of the Ford Prefect was known as the Popular (deluxe model) or Anglia (basic trim) and the station wagon was called the Squire with wood trim and Escort without - Lesney modeled the panel van in Singer colours as 59a And this very basic car inspired Douglas Adams to name one of his lead characters from the Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy.......... karl-e 04-29-2009, 04:44 PM This is a thread I can relate to  I think the early stuff is way to underappriciated here on HT. The contemporary models does nothing for me! The Canteen however, is one of my top-ten favorite Lesney toys! Karl-E. Denmark http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j216/karl-e/74A-1.jpg Mine too... just happen to have a lot of silver versions, a couple badly painted or repainted, and one with a broken door which I keep for sentimental reasons. It was just a fluke I won the white version and the cream version on evilbay earlier this year. RVREVO 04-29-2009, 08:31 PM Now that's more like it. SMS88's 3.8 6cyl Jag or his 352 c.u.
