View Full Version : My 20 year old Vitese Porsche 926
69Stang 04-26-2009, 09:14 PM Not bad for a 21 year old package and car. Not a very detailed car, but for $10 delivered, I have no complaints! Made in Portugal by Vitese. I will also add this to our Porsche thread...
Rothmans Porsche 962, driven to first place by Hans-Joachim Stuck Jr,
Derek Bell, GB and Al Holbert, USA.

karl s 04-26-2009, 10:04 PM Made in Portugal, so this is an old one before they transfered production to China... They went out of business in 2001 and were bought by Sun Star - see http://www.vitessegroup.com/. BTW, the S is double (hard to see on their old trademark) - Vitesse means speed in French. See http://www.vitessemodels.com/ for their new site (warning - music).
69Stang 04-26-2009, 10:21 PM Very cool information, I had no idea the history of this company, nore that they had been bought out. Yep, I was very pleased for a $10 dollar bill!

69Stang 04-27-2009, 06:48 AM Opps, sorry bout that Alex, what would I do without you! I posted the correct model number in the text, but indeed reversed the sequence in the title. It is indeed a 962. I will ask a mod to correct that since I have no access to edit titles.

Porsche 962.
Do you know what 62 in 962 signified?
Do you know what 62 in 962 signified?
The 62 of itself nothing - the three digit Porsche 9xx project numbers began with the 901- Peugeot objected, because they used three digit model numbers with a "0" in the middle - so the 901, became the 911. Even though the 911 is still with us, internally at Porsche the succeeding generations have had their own 9xx numbers, 964, 993, 996 & current 997.
Of course, Porsche did use 90x numbers, but, only for racing cars, the 904. 906, 907 & 908, or specific mechanicle pieces - 905 was the designation of the 4-speed Sportomatic gearbox.
Other designations - 945, the right hand drive version of the 944, but, not called such - 945s were still marketed as 944s. The current Boxster is project 987 - not used as the model name.
It should be noted, that Porsche project design numbers began much earlier than the 901 - it just followed on in numerical order. For instance, #7 was a pre WW II 6-cylinder Wanderer saloon, #22 was the Auto-Union 16-cylinder GP car, #101 a Tiger tank, #328 a Tractor, #356, the first Porsche car, #550 & #718 Porsche sports racing cars & #804 a Porsche F1 car.
The next 911 will be project code 998 - the numbers are probably now in four figures with the new designs on the way.
69Stang 04-28-2009, 11:32 PM Ok....that is just fun to read! And all in post 633! (just liked the three number thing going on here!)

According to my records, Project #633 was a design exercise for Studebaker of all companies....
