View Full Version : New Oval Track in Indy
fselzer 04-26-2009, 01:43 PM Paved oval track now under renovation at the Marion County Fairgrounds in Indianapolis Indiana. This track will feature a 260 ft x 180 ft. paved oval, an infield dirt oval, and the track is wide enough to set up an on-road course on the paved oval.
If anybody would like to help out it would be appreciated. Go to our website at rcarassociation.org. We hope to have some racing by the end of May or first of june.
We will run these classes:
-1/10 electric and nitro touring cars
-1/10 indy cars
-1/8th GTP cars
-1/8th open class (serpent, evolvas etc)
-1/10 scale sliders on dirt oval
-stadium trucks (slayer/slash etc) on dirt oval
-1/4 scale nascars and nastrucks
-1/4 scale sprint cars on dirt oval
This place will be awesome when it's done.
fselzer 04-29-2009, 09:02 AM Velodrome guys are welcome at our track! Visit rcarassociation.org
fselzer 05-18-2009, 01:42 PM Be sure to visit our new website at rcarassociation.org:thumbsup:
fselzer 05-30-2009, 08:26 PM We are making progress on the track! We had some final grading done on the dirt track but some areas were still to wet. Also, renovating the pagoda (scoring tower) is going very well as we are just about ready for paint. As soon as the paved oval is sealcoated the new outer walls will be installed and the huge drivers stand with pits underneath will be assembled and installed. Since it is an outdoor track weather plays a big part in our plans, but hopefully, the dirt track will be open for practice and driver feedback in a week or two.
Visit our website at rcarassociation.org often for updates as we will be having a survey next week on the website so that we can make sure that we are going to meet your needs.
Thanks for so much interest!!
scottman2007 05-31-2009, 06:26 PM Thats great hearing that the work is coming right along, cant wait too get on the dirt.thanks for the update i think thats what everyone has been waiting for.

Nobody wants to run on dirt more than me, but the weather has been lousy, and I've already spent alot of money just to get it somewhat close but I still need drainage tile put in, rocks raked off and outer track barriers installed.
So, I said that I will open the paved oval to get some revenue then continue with the dirt oval. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Sorry it has taken longer than I thought it would.
scottman2007 06-30-2009, 03:46 PM No problem ,money doesnt grow on trees, and the pavd oval looks awsome, went to the website saw the new photos,i wonder if we could run a class of slash trucks but with a late model dirt body,or take the wings off of the 1/10 sliders and run sprints as well,ai would like to see a class of F1 or open wheel,HPI is coming out with a really nice F1 car, called F Ten,and it uses a four cell pack,we could have a spec F1/Open wheel Oval Class.by the way the F1 kit by HPI is only $129.99. but i would be willing to run slash truck wit late model body on paved oval, sounda like a blast to me Guys.Chim in if you would run this class.

Thanks for understanding our situation. We really do want to get the dirt track going ASAP.
However, you have brought up some really cool possibilities. I am wide open as to what classes you guys want to run. I feel that you are the racers so you tell me what classes you want. I like all racing (but really like sprint cars and open wheel) By the way, my HPI F10 is in the mail!!!
scottman2007 07-01-2009, 09:11 AM Ok Since You Are Buying One ,and I Was Thinking Of Getting One As Well, lets Get A Class And Make Some Rules, I Would Like To See It Be A Spec Class For Cost Reasons.does Hpi Make A Good Modified Motor??
Please Anyone Else On Here Would Be Interested In Running A Open Wheel F1 Style Spec Class, Chime In. And If You Are Interested Hpi F1 Ten Kit Is Only About $129.
And We Could Have A Spec Class To Where You Could Run A Modifed Motor Or An Equal Brushless. I Think This Could Be A Very Cool Class And At A Low Cost.could You Imagine About 10 To 12 Indy /f1 Cars Flying Around The New Oval?!?!?!
SO WITH THAT, I SUGGEST YOU CAN USE ING F1 CHASSIS,AND YOU MUST RUN RUBBER TIRES,AND THE BATTERY AND MOTOR RULES WE DECIDE ON,BUT I THINK RUBBER TIRES AND NO FOAMS,MAKE IT A DRIVERS RACE.

Let me do some research on the motors. I think that a spec class is best. What if we limited it to just brushless motors 10.5 or 13.5 and rubber tires?
Anyone else want to weigh in on this?
scottman2007 07-01-2009, 11:34 AM We Could But I Was Thinking Of The Cost Factor, brushless System Is Going To Be Al Least $150.00 Min,so I Was Think Of A Modified Motor And Or A Brushless System That Would Equal The Brushed Motor.just My Opinion Have A Choice. So Suit More People.
SPHOBBS 07-01-2009, 11:49 AM Here I go Putting my 2 cents worth in where it doesn't belong ,They run 21.5 lipo at my track and love it 3 5min. heats and a 10 min. main with one battery pack,The drivers love it That works here Scott
SPHOBBS 07-01-2009, 11:53 AM Oh I forgot Great luck with the new renovated track Sounds like it will be a great place to race and have good fellowship Scott Branford R/C speedway N.Fl.
scottman2007 07-01-2009, 12:56 PM Thanks For The Input ,anyone Else Please Speak Up And Lets See What We Can Come Up With
Kevin Cole 07-01-2009, 01:15 PM I would consider ordering an HPI F1 today if a rules package is set in stone real soon.
Rubber tires sounds good on that surface...and I think you could go with a 10.5/19turn option on the motors.
There should also be a battery rule if you plan to indeed make it a spec class.
Get this deal together so we can order some kits and run it.
I'd like to see it as a Friday evening/night class as well,no one runs a good program on Fridays and it will increase the car count.Saturdays are the main race day everywhere...not too much racing on Fridays or Sundays around here.
scottman2007 07-01-2009, 01:25 PM Thanks For Input Kevin, what Battery Would You Say Since The Car Takes Only A 4 Cell Pack???

We could race this class on Fridays under the lights!
scottman2007 07-01-2009, 03:10 PM What Would Be Race Time, later The Better For Me
nutz4rc 07-01-2009, 03:46 PM Why not use the 1 cell SMC lipo? Simplifies the class and you only need one battery for a night of racing.
scottman2007 07-01-2009, 05:07 PM yeah but whay tis the cost ofthis smc i cell lipo?? this is a big oval i want some decent speed
Kevin Cole 07-01-2009, 05:47 PM We could race this class on Fridays under the lights!
That sounds like a plan...it would be a great starting point for your new schedule.Like I said, there's not a lot going on in the RC community on Friday nights.
It looks like Fridays are for oval racing...but a onroad race here & there would be cool too.
As far as the battery,I have not looked at the kit close enough to see what is capable.I think Larry is looking in the right direction with the Lipo thought.Although Lipos seem high in price, keep in mind you can get more runs out of it per session & the life is unheard of.
We need to get more input & commitments to buy the kit...and then the raceways operators will be able to lay down some rules.
So far we seem to have the race day chosen(Friday nights). Now we need to get a roll call of drivers willing to buy the kit...and openly discuss opinions among those drivers.
Kevin Cole 07-01-2009, 05:54 PM Indy/F1 Spec Class Rollcall
1)fselzer...already ordered an HPI
2)Kevin Cole...just had Toys Forever(Muncie) order my HPI.
Kevin Cole 07-01-2009, 06:09 PM http://www2.gpmd.com/imagel/h/lhpic2851.jpg
It looks like the release date is mid July...I'm on the list.
scottman2007 07-01-2009, 07:46 PM Kevin what is the Price at Brandons???
I agree with Kevin lets talk rules as well and get input from everyone.lipos would be good.
Here is what i think on a starting place for rules with what kevin and larry have mention so far, F1 chassis,....Tamiya...HPI...Cross. (this way you have choices)
Tires.......HPI F1 Rubber Tires and Rims(as long as they fit other Kits)
Motor...... 19 Turn Motor,...Or,13.5/17.5 brushless system (need to find out which one)
Battery....Up to a 4000 lipo..(car only excepts a four cell nimh) or up to 5600nimh pack
Body ....Any F1 or IRL body
Wings...Must be stock that comes with the kit....No big add on Lexan Wings.
Ok guys thats my opinion on Rules everyone can now chime in and go from here.
Kevin Cole 07-01-2009, 09:34 PM I'll leave the rules package to the guys that run the track/program...although opinions are needed to move forward.
Here a link to HPI and some good info on this ride.
http://www.hpiracing.com/kitinfo/102851/
Remember this kit is less than $120.
flywheel93 07-01-2009, 11:29 PM I know some guys local to the track that have tamiya f103s I wouldn't leave them out. Just a thought. If on the same tires, battery, and motor I think it would work out.
Kevin Cole 07-01-2009, 11:45 PM I agree...the more cars, the more fun we have on the track.
That's why we need to come up with a motor & battery rule...and some tire guidelines.

Ok guys thats my opinion on Rules everyone can now chime in and go from here.
These rules sound OK to me. I raced a brushed 19T against a brushless 13.5 and I looked silly slow (this was considered the stock class back then). Remember this is a huge oval over 600 ft run line and 30 ft wide (at least for now). How many laps do you think that these cars can do with a 5600 nimh pack and 19T brushed motor?
What about a stock 19T class with 5600 nimh batts and a modified class with 13.5 brushless with one cell lipo. stock tires for both classes?
scottman2007 07-02-2009, 09:10 AM that could work or maybe instead of a 13.5 brushless with 19turn motors maybe make it 17.5,also i know you have to gear them for the size of this oval,i think whne they run at velodrome they run real high tooth pinions, like iam wanting to say the pinions are 40tooth and more??
Kevin do you know what they run on their indy cars over there as far as gears ratio???
SPHOBBS 07-02-2009, 11:37 AM One LIPO pack and you are done ,Brushless Motor No brushes to stock and shape never lol
Kevin Cole 07-02-2009, 01:08 PM I'm not sure what the Indy car guys are doing with ratio at the velo...I run there COT spec class.I'm using a 100 tooth spur with pinions ranging around 45-50 teeth.
We will need to check the rear pod and make sure we can squeeze that kind of gears into it on these new cars if that's the case.
In my opinion you do not want to offer 2 options for this class until the field is stable and in place with 1 option(I'd rather race with 8 cars than 3).
Make a suitable call on the motors that matches brushed with brushless or just leave the motors open.Everyone will have to make their setups and tires work against the same pavement anyway. How often does the fastest car at the Indy500 actually win the race?I think the appeal of this oval will be the same as the velodrome...speed.A class of 19turn brushed motors or 17.5 might take away that appeal.Maybe an open motor rules will spark interest from the gear heads that want to go fast...but they must remember they have four corners to get around.
Ultimately what needs to be done is testing with the car to see what we should do motor wise.I have a new 19t and new 9turn brushed mods...and a 17.5,13.5,and a 10.5 brushless motors.I'll be more than happy to spend some time testing motors with Mr Selzer to see whats suitable as soon as the my kit arrives...if that is what we need to do.
nutz4rc 07-02-2009, 01:41 PM SMC 1 cell Lipo is $54.95 most places, some lower. Most Lipos are good for hundreds of cycles. A good matched (that is one pack) of NIMHs is more than this and sometimes doesn't last anytime.
I don't have any NIHMs in my box anymore.
But this is for the rules makers to decide.

Thanks Kevin for the offer to test different motors - come on out anytime you want to. Test different tires types and compounds also!
By the way, we are looking for a race director. This would be a volunteer position for the remainder of this season, but could be a paid board member position next season. This person would be responsible for determining the racing classes and the rules that govern them. They would also either direct the racing themselves or supervise someone else. visit the website for further info as we approach our grand opening Aug 8th.
Anybody interested out there??
Kevin Cole 07-02-2009, 04:21 PM You're welcome sir...
Now we wait until HPI ships these little monsters to move forward.
I'm not working(enjoying severance pay)this summer and have plenty of time to spare...let me know what I can do to help you guys out.

scottman2007 07-02-2009, 09:47 PM I totally agree with with kevin and mr.selzer,we need to see what gears will fit the rear pod. i will agree on pretty much any rules but like kevin said,we need to get as many racers as we can,and then as it grows maybe do an open class, and the like a super stock class, that might be alittle cheaper, but iam like kevin i would rathr race against 8 to 10 racers all thrown together, than divide up too many classes and the only run against 3 people in one class and 5 in another.the more the merrier to my opinon.and like you guys said its not always the fastest car wins ,lets not forget you can put a 10.5 in that car but it has to make that turn at the end of the straights.
So iam game guys.
has anyone heard of a date the car will actually be shipped yet???
Sm14keD 07-03-2009, 02:46 AM Doh, don't look like you're gonna have many, if any nitro's running huh ?
Whats the rules gonna look like for the nitro's if any are ran . . .

Funny that you should say that. I'm a nitro guy at heart and that is really the only thing that I have run except for my B10 buggy. There will definitely be nitro run at the track. The track size lends itself to nitro really well. Any 10th scale nitro touring cars, 8th scale onroad like serpents or 7th scale like ofna DM-7. There is alot planned it just all needs to come together rather quickly the next few weeks.

Thanks Kevin, I will take this conversation off-line from here to discuss some details on your yahoo account.
fselzer 07-03-2009, 08:53 PM I just got done running my nitro TC3 on the track with foam tires and it performed really good. My setup was pretty good and the track is really fast. I was in second gear wide open all the way around. Soooo much fun.
There is a bump in the front staight that I will attempt to remove before practice on Friday.
Sm14keD 07-04-2009, 02:00 AM Sweet, I can't wait to run my 4-Tec on the track.
I will definatly be out there Saturday!

This "bump" was enough to throw off the balance of the car and the suspension bounced enough that I had to really be "on the wheel" - which ain't a bad thing.
scottman2007 07-04-2009, 10:48 PM i wonder how that would effect the hpi f1 car?? happy 4th everyone.
i jusrt saw on the website that no personal trnsponders are allowed ,why not?? i tought this was an AMB system??
just wondering.
waderacing38@ne 07-05-2009, 12:11 AM what kind of classes are you thinking about for pan cars just curious??
Kevin Cole 07-05-2009, 12:46 AM Input is key right now Jeremy...throw out some ideas for Mr Selzer to work with.
I'm sure more info will come around very soon, but racer input speaks volumes right now.
What would you like to see buddy?
I'd like to get some use out of our Velo cars somewhere other than just the high banks of the westside.
