This may be the newbiest question on this board but I have to ask it. I have a tecumseh 8hp engine on a chipper/shredder and have pulled the carb to clean it. All of the diagrams I see for tecumseh show a primer bulb on the carb. Is it possible to not have one?

Have you had this unit very long?
It is possible to have one without a primer, if the primer is remote (mounted elsewhere on the engine) or there is a choke on your carburetor.
Post your Model and serial number of your engine and we can check and see what it's supposed to have.

There is a choke on the carb and I have now solved that issue. Apparently the carb needed a good cleaning, then an even better cleaning, and better yet an even better cleaning (I know, that's a lot of cleaning.) Never under estimate the power of compressed air, it is definitely your friend when it comes to cleaning the jets (that's what I found anyway.) For my next issue, I now have oil blowing out of what I believe is the crankcase breather (no I didn't overfill it.) I guess I should take that off and clean it as well? Do they get clogged in any way? I have been reading the service manual and it mentions the level of RPM's and from my untrained ear I would say that the RPM's on the motor do seem high. The engine is a Tecumseh HM80-155481P.

Check that the oil is not over full, it could have gas in it from when the carb was messed up, also if the engine is overreving it will throw oil out the breather. Have a good one. Geo

I'll change the oil again now that the carb is functioning. I notice in the book it mentions the crankcase breather passing oil if the unit is at an extreme angle. The motor is trailer mounted but is not currently hooked up to a trailer. Could the angle it is constantly sitting in be enough to constitute this? Maybe I'll try to replace the oil and set the tongue of the trailer up to have the motor level and see if the problem persists.
