View Full Version : "CAPRICA" - What th'?
seaQuest 04-17-2009, 03:39 PM So, Caprica is going to be released straight to DVD and download. This was supposed to be a pilot for a possible series! What happened, did Universal Media Studios lose confidence in Ronald D. Moore and David Eick's prequel?
sbaxter 04-17-2009, 03:48 PM Nope; they're just trying to build interest in the show by releasing the pilot to DVD now. The series is still set to air (in the fall, I think).

I can't confirm this, but I'm pretty sure that the series is supposed to start airing in early 2010.
I was also a bit surprised in the idea of making it a DVD release. I admit I'm curious, but there's no way that I'm going to buy it sight unseen, I've got it in my Netflix queue for next week.
It might generate buzz, but then again, if the DVDs don't fly off the shelves, I wonder what the kickback might be if it doesn't take off.

Jodet 04-17-2009, 10:43 PM I think it's a smart way to get interest in the show up.
I wish they would do the same thing with the 'Stargate Universe' pilot. That's one pilot I'm really looking forward to. I'm hoping it doesn't turn into 'Stargate Galactica', but we shall see.
Sometimes I wish BSG hadn't gotten all the critical acclaim. 'Dark' is fine, but there are other options.
Jim NCC1701A 04-18-2009, 06:39 AM I watched about 20 minutes of it on a leaked download. Couldn't get into it - it seemed more like a sci-fi 90210 or Dynasty... maybe it gets better further into the pilot, I might give it another go.
ClubTepes 04-21-2009, 10:41 PM My theory is this.....
The show really isn't going to be all that great.
But they want to get everyone still on their Battlestar 'high'.
They're afraid that if people don't like the show, then they've lost them for DVD sales.
Which is an ever increasing portion of revenue for TV.
Lou Dalmaso 04-22-2009, 08:08 AM I had heard (yes, this is one of those base-less internet rumors) that part of the reasoning behind releasing the pilot now was so that the producers could get feedback on what aspects of the story "worked" and what didn't so that they could taylor the eventual series in the direction that would be more popular.
Kinda makes sence
Eric K 04-22-2009, 08:33 AM Geee, I thought that was what test audiences and focus groups were for.......
Dave P 04-22-2009, 09:58 AM I watched it last night. Good, but not great. Has the potential to be an interesting show. It's not sci fi 90210 by any stretch. You have to see the whole thing.
I won't spoil it, but we get to see the beginnings of the Cylon one true God concept and the first working prototype old school Cylon. The background on the Adama family was a bit unexpected. Esai Morales is a good choice for Joe Adama.
Scheisseler 04-22-2009, 04:17 PM 'Dark' is fine, but there are other options.
Heard that! I wish "dark" could be stricken from science fiction fans' vocabulary for a few years.
Lou Dalmaso 04-23-2009, 12:37 PM ^^ along with "Dystopic" and "Gritty"
Media Robinson 04-23-2009, 09:11 PM I'd like to see a miniseries about one of the other colonies.
Carson Dyle 04-24-2009, 02:58 PM Watched the pilot last night.
Although a bit clinical in spots, "Caprica" certainly has potential. Any show that manages to incorporate aspects of Faust, Star Trek, The Godfather, Frankenstein, Dynasty, and the works of William Gibson can’t be all bad.
I just wish it had more spaceships.
PerfesserCoffee 04-24-2009, 03:17 PM Gee! Why is everyone so negative about this show?
JUST KIDDING! I won't go down that road!
I'll give it a chance.
I wasn't all that turned on by the new BSG pilot nor the Stargate series for that matter and gave both series a chance and I really got hooked. I'll give this one a few episodes to grow on me. We shall see what we shall see.
Lou Dalmaso 04-28-2009, 03:19 PM I know that TPTB are using sci-fi trappings to tell contemporary stories, but unless they show more of the sc-fi elements, it may as well be a new drama on TNT or Lifetime.
Why does this society have FTL tech, if they never ventured out past the colonies? how did the Battlestars come to be built anyway? did the colonies have other enemies before the Cylons?
I can see RDM's point (from the commentary) that the Caprican govt. would use the newly created Cylons as an army in their conflicts with the other colonies and that (like in COPATA) they would eventually learn to say "no" to thier masters.
there is a rich vein to be mined here. I just hope it doesn't turn into a microscopic tale of two families
