View Full Version : Foam Sprint Car Wing Finishing Question
jbrooks39 04-14-2009, 11:25 PM Guys
I would like to know how some of you are finishing your foam sprint car wings.
What I mean by this is how are you coating the foam? Are you using Monokote? Are you using an epoxy finish then a Monokote? Are you doing something completely different altogether?
I have tried Monokote and other "sign" vinyl, but the adhesion does not last long and the coating is lifting up off of the foam.
Any tips, tricks, or general information is appreciated.
Thanks,
Joe

I have two of Fred's wings. I like them a great deal; they are well built.
However, since the new rules mandate me raising my wing height in order to comply, I am looking to run a foam wing that weighs less and limits the amount of weight I have "up in the air".
Fred builds a great wing; don't get me wrong.

I am not going to argue the pros and cons about wing height; at least not on this conference. ;)
Bring that sprint car to MPR this summer.
Regardless of where a wing is effective or not effective, if anyone has any input regarding the finishing of a foam wing, please pass along any information you have.

I have had pretty good luck with this stuff..... I think it has a lot better adhesion... real sticky! And its a little thicker. I have noticed that when applying to the foam it has or needs to be cleaned well.... I usually just blow it off with the air hose to get rid of the loose foam. Looks different and you can cover a bunch of wings with 10 yds.

Tanner-
Have you experienced any lifting of the vinyl once it is in place?
I guess what I am thinking is that if the carbon fiber vinyl adheres well enough, I could get black, white, or whatever color as long as the brand and type of vinyl was the same.
Thanks,
Joe
disruptor 11 04-15-2009, 10:53 PM Joe..... I truly have not had a problem with this covering.
Actually have to be careful not to pull the Velcro off the covering
and I use the commercial strength Velcro. I have covered both the
WCM and the QSM foam with great results..... And I think
they are both a little different in texture. Something I've thought
about is using a super super thin layer of Gorilla Glue... Minus the water
and sandwich between some soft foam for a few hours. If this stuff
ever comes up, that will be my next step.
disruptor 11 04-15-2009, 10:57 PM Hey Joe .... Do you know of anyone from your track
heading down our way this weekend..... if so I could send some that
that way for you to try out.

I am not sure if Bob Elliott or Larry Hopson are heading down. If they are there, I am sure they would gladly bring a piece back for me.
I looked over my wing tonight. I think some of the lifting that takes place is related to the weather as the film was not that bad tonight. I will still welcome something a bit better. :)
Thanks in advance!
