Bet that title really attracts some attention..LOL...

Just acquired a 42 yr old virgin of a slot car body.
Aurora '67 Galaxie XL 500 in red.
Body must have been a card mounted piece.
Posts have never been tapped for screws, never been mounted to a chassis.
It's in like new mint condition.
My question is, should I mount it to a mint original / or mint restored chassis or just bag this puppy for display.
Thoughts?
(and no, sorry, but it's not leaving it's new found home.

I have a few Aurora bodies like that and I think the best thing to do is use silicone (permatex, etc.) and just dab some of that onto the chassis where the posts rest.

This way you are not tapping the posts, but still can display the body.

P.S. Mine are a Red 68 Firebird, Red Lola, Red GT40, Green Ford J and a Red Olds Tornado

I would mount it or sell it if it were mine. I don't collect, so when I get something of value and I really like it, I run it. If I just kinda like it, I sell it and use the money to buy stuff I will run.

Well, we ARE in the "Collecting" section of the forum.

I would bag it and display it. And if you would like to actually run a Galaxie, find another that's already been around the block a few times, so to speak.

Now this is more the way I'm thinking

If you want to run a Galaxie, buy one of Dash's new bodies. Keep the pristine one or sell it to a collector that will value it for it's untouched condition. With TJets pushing 50 years old, it is hard to find them in an as-produced state. A collector would give you enough to allow you to buy a Dash or three and the chassis to put under them (NOS Tjet or AW).

Seeing the discarded and abused Aurora Tubtrack in another thread has made me think more about preserving the history of our hobby. Collectors (like Mr. Aurora, Bob Beers) fill the role of hobby historians. Personally, I don't collect anything I won't drive. Just the Hutt's way of thinking. :drunk::hat::freak::dude:

I;d save it... find a cheap runner to blast around the track and keep the perfect body, perfect

Hi "hut",

Uhh, this is the box stock & collecting forum, right?
The reason I acquired this is because I am a collector, restorer, modifier & racer. I have a humble but nice collection of vintage Atlas, Tyco "S", Lionel, Eldon, Faller, as well many nice stored vintage Aurora items. I also maintain a stable of "runners" and racers, some of which are original Aurora, Dash, JL, AW, customs, even a Mini Lindy!
The question I'm asking is not whether to run it, but whether to "bag" the body or cut threads by mounting it to a NOS chassis. Either way it will be display only. Though unmounted with pristine posts will maintain a higher value. Now, I do want to run a Galaxie, never actually having one in all my 51 yrs, and I usually pickup items a little less than perfect and restore them, a little like Bill Hall.
By the way, since when did Dash make a '67 Ford Galaxie XL 500 ?

Our resident Hutt is medicated for serious back issues and probably meant to say RRR....As far as Dash making a 67 XL500, never as far as I know.. I sure wish he did or would. RRR does make a resin repop of it in a kit form. Molded in color choice, chrome bumpers and clear resin glass. I believe HO Models does a version also but with Alclad painted bumpers.

I believe Bad Dawg is on the hunt for a pristine XL500 for making a resin cast.. It would be cool to be able to find affordable XL 500's, Rivieras, Toronados, and torinos just for customizing and kicking around the track..

hey Slotcarman,

Rivs aren't too pricy on epay, as long as yer not lookin' for grey or slate. Reds, whites, turqs, tans are most prevalent and pretty cheap. Runner Toronados are fairly cheap, especially with the normal pillar breakage.
I dunno, but I prefer vintage original plastic. Maybe something about the mystique of when I was a kid. A substitute maybe OK for a drag or custom, but theirs just something about bein' jenny!

I just feel funny doing any type of customizing to something that old.. even a runner body. I suffered customizers remorse just painting an old chrome cigarbox vette that I stripped. :drunk: The majority of my customizing is making flamethrowers (but way better) out of anything that'll mount to a tjet chassis. I'd rather drill holes and mill out tail lights on a new 10.00 body than a 15-25.00 vintage piece. :) I'm on a limited budget again so my choices have to be made carefully.. :(

Hey, I figure runners are pretty worthless, already bein' cut & hacked. Unless it's a rare item it's fair game. Can't devalue it any more than it probably is.
I'll pickup cut or broken "runners" on epay occasionally, with good chassis, pretty cheap, comparable to JL or AW. I'll then repair screw posts, repair cut fenders, roof pillars, polish out and you'd be hard pressed to differentiate from stock original, as long as other parts like chrome & glass are good. I too use the re polymerization goop method of cooking down vintage junk ( real worthless junk) plastic to use as repair medium. May cutup some for donor panels & parts. Ooops, there I go destroying vintage plastic. Hey, it's already destroyed. Lord knows I followed Aurora's lead in the '60 ( right out of their HopUp manual) to cut fenders for larger tires.
My other hobby is oil painting, so mixing to match is pretty easy for me.

Sorry for being a butthead. :(

The Hutt (two t's) humbly apologizes for misunderstanding your original post. 1) I was terribly upset at the treatment of the porr tubby. 2) What Slotcarman said. Too much medicinal tequila mixed with vicondin can make a guy (or Hutt, in my case) get all parinoid about pristine slot cars getting the butcher job.

I like the bagging idea except I would put it in a repop Aurora box instead of bag. IMHO, that would look pretty cool.

Hi Hutt,

No problem! How about a jenny Aurora box?

Hi Hutt,

No problem! How about a jenny Aurora box?

Another bad assumption on my part was the lackage of a jenny box. As they say, if you got 'em, smoke 'em. Or, if ya got jenny box then use the jenny box. If you have the jenny box insert that would be REALLY SWEET. Somehow, I am thinking you do.

nope, insert is one thing I could use.
