View Full Version : Scrap Build Contest ?
ClearHooter 04-06-2009, 06:04 PM The subject came up in the on the "Anyone For Leftovers?" thread concerning what might be an interesting competition. A scrap build so to speek. I really enjoy them and have come up with some odd outcomes. The latest one I'm working on being a prime example.
Has anyone ever tried this as a contest?
My concern was, how would you be able to regulate it? Photo the pieces to varify they are 100% junk or beater bodies?
Anyone interested in such an affair?
xddorox 04-06-2009, 06:48 PM Sounds very interesting, I'm in.
harristotle 04-06-2009, 07:12 PM Cool idea, but I would not be able to participate.
bob8748 04-06-2009, 11:38 PM I'd be interested. I've tried it before. Photos of pieces would work but I sort of think the outcome would speak for itself. may have to allow a little more time to build also.
69Stang 04-07-2009, 06:44 AM I would love to see it as a contest, but it's way over my head skill wise!
Lummox 04-07-2009, 10:14 AM ... it's way over my head skill wise!
No it ain't.
zeb41 04-07-2009, 12:24 PM I would love to see it as a contest, but it's way over my head skill wise!
You could do this Ward. Ya just glue some crap together, fill it with some body pudding, sand it smooth and slam some paint on it. Piece O' Cake.
LIGHTNING44 04-07-2009, 03:25 PM How would you do regulate it? You'd have no way of knowing if the person built it from scratch, or bought cars with pieces needed.
HOOD48 04-07-2009, 03:28 PM Why don't you get a list of people who wants to enter. Hopefully an even number. Assign each person an addy to send a bag of parts to a contest member. When you get your bag of goodies you must take a picture of the parts before you start your build.
jnkfleet 04-07-2009, 04:18 PM First of all this is a good idea, I'd like to participate..I've been busy with other affairs, but now am free of them. I'm back to HobbyTalk daily now! Yipee!!
OK..Number one..We are all honest builders...Anyone that participates should have integrity enough to represent their build as a true "scrap custom".
I will put this idea out to all of You..."Contests" are great, but "Show & Tells" are cool as well..Show and tell lightens the pressure of competition, and yet allows anyone to participate with a simple "this is what I built" idea, then (a) gather Your scrap parts (b) lay them out (photo if desired) (c) begin the project, maybe track/document your progress with discriptions/pics as it progresses...No regulating except by the builder. (d)at the end of the build deadline, we'd each post pics of our "scrap custom" along with the parts, materials, skills used to complete it.
OK..We all have different ideas,ability/skill levels, access to parts etc....But being a show and tell, not a contest, we are free to help each other out with providing parts (should anyone need them), advice..Bring this community together for the good of all. We do this daily anyway.
What do you think?

i agree with jeff's idea. instead of a contest...show and tell. this would help alot of people out and can ask questions when stuck. maybe a drawing of your idea before starting and see how close you can come to it.

Hey Pat I'm on the board!...Digging through a lot of spare parts..I got tons of usable scrap..What will I build?
I remember when my first 5 gallon bucket of cutup pieces was filled I thought I had a lot of waste..I saved everything, now this event may be what that was all for...Seriously,,If anyone needs a certain part or parts, ask me before you chop up any whole castings..I'll share what I have...GLADLY!
gunni agree with jeff's idea. instead of a contest...show and tell. this would help alot of people out and can ask questions when stuck. maybe a drawing of your idea before starting and see how close you can come to it.
Thanks..We can do this,, I like the drawing idea, I'm going to get some parts together, just digging thru my surplus has brought a few designs to my mind.
This is exactly how I came up with the "Beetle Ups 1 &2" and the "Till-N-Mytater", "Lawn-Moo-oo-oo-wer"..All done from scrap diecast pieces.

jingles 04-07-2009, 07:12 PM the only thing I can draw are flys, but I would try to build something. I don't have the imagination some of you guys have.
ClearHooter 04-07-2009, 07:48 PM Jeff...Spoken like a gentleman and a scholar. I personally loathe "contests." It was hard making my fingers type "Scrap Build C...c..con...Contest!" I really like the "show and tell" concept. Its not a far step from what I do with my WIP threads anyway.
I find that the digital image many times brings out flaws I can't even see with my magnifing glasses. So since I got the pics anyway I put 'em up for those who might be interested.
Like Jeff, many of my favorite pieces are made from junk, or at least beaters I've bought at the flea market to cut up. Several of the "Longnoses" as well as, my still, all time favorite, "AC Daytona Coupe" (The remains of which rendered another custom as well....Can't remember what I called that one right off.) came about this way.
As far as concept drawings that's not really the direction my scrap builds work from. But I could submit a rendering once I get some pieces together.
I like the idea of showing the donor parts... As a starting point.
I've got a couple of flea market finds that might make a good starting point.
This could be a good chance to clean out some junk parts.
xddorox 04-07-2009, 08:45 PM Show and tell sounds great. Best way to share knowledge.
zeb41 04-07-2009, 09:18 PM I like the show and tell theme too. I agree that it would take the pressure off of builders and allow those who might be a bit intimidated by this to experiment.
BudJ63 04-07-2009, 11:31 PM I'd join in on a scrap build show and tell, but the only scraps I have right now are metal filings!:thumbsup:
jnkfleet 04-07-2009, 11:44 PM Lookin' like a free for all show about to happen! Most of you are in agreement with helping each other with tips, tricks, parts, and all around custom info, heaven help us now...To think what we may be introducing to the customs world.
Anything Goes, and just go for it, how can you beat that concept?
The parimeters are off the chart and the outcome may be too....
No reason(s) not to throw something together,, anything Your mind conjours up, see if You can transfer it to a real hands on "collectable".
I just think this gives everyone a playing field, that allows ideas from custom cool to custom outrageousness (also cool) and interesting "things" we can be proud to display and talk about for a long time.
Blah Blah Blah....:woohoo:I could go on but I'd rather get back into my parts buckets..I'm finding things I forgot I had..This show is already producing enjoyment for me.
What are we doing for a timeline? 1month? 2 months? I feel 3-4 months would be great! I'm not Chip Foose...LoL.

jnkfleet 04-07-2009, 11:50 PM I'd join in on a scrap build show and tell, but the only scraps I have right now are metal filings!:thumbsup:
Definately an incredible idea for a car grinding/ metal muncher diorama right there.
Was'nt that what J. James did with the hearse on one episode of Monster Garage?

BudJ63 04-07-2009, 11:54 PM Just had an idea. Make a charity auction of the Scrap Build Customs rather than a contest? Have them all sent to one place, maybe one of the festivals or gatherings? That way someone would be getting a "scrapload" of one of a kind Customs, plus benefiting a charity.
bob8748 04-08-2009, 12:40 AM I'm lovin the way this is going. The charity idea sounds good to me as well. Kind of makes it less of a contest. Not sure it would be a high dollar event though. But, ya never know. Personally I like the idea of using what I have. Because I really dont have as much as some may have to chose from. I'd hate to recieve a real cool package of useable stuff if I sent out a bunch of miss matched parts. I'm guilty of digging through my stuff right now too.
This is a great idea. The word "different" really applies here.
A No Holds Barred Junkyard Wars type of thing. But all in good fun!
CadillacPat 04-08-2009, 02:31 AM You know when you look at all the Events ever conducted here at HobbyTalk they have all stressed the Show and Tell aspect of Customizing.
That's pretty much what the HT Customs Board is all about.
The all day Customs BuildOff I held in San Antonio was advertised as exactly that, a full day of "Show & Tell Customizing" where everyone was a winner, both participants and audience, and no one was a loser.
What turned me off to Convention Custom Contests was the fact that 99% of the participants, the real heart of the show, never got the press that the same 3 or 4 people did over and over.
It was that 99% that I really enjoyed talking shop with and who were more than willing to share their knowledge.
My Convention trophies are all in a box out in the garage somewhere but I still have all my contacts.
I don't think Show and Tell Customizing is a stretch of the imagination by any means.
More like business as usual.
Winning a Contest is okay but networking with other Customizers is far better.

harristotle 04-08-2009, 10:51 AM I really like the charity idea. Whoever wants to could have a time period to complete it and sent them to one person and then a raffle could be held with the funds benefitting a charity. A raffle would allow a greater number of people a chance to win them and participate...
Lummox 04-09-2009, 10:33 AM How about each person hacks up a car into 3 pieces, roof, front clip, and the rear 3/4s
and you send each section to a different person.
BudJ63 04-09-2009, 11:00 AM How about each person hacks up a car into 3 pieces, roof, front clip, and the rear 3/4s

I like this idea.
Lummox 04-09-2009, 12:24 PM I dunno who would send what to who, but you smart types can figger that out. :)
In any build it's nice if you have a bit of skill along with an artists eye....
...but this way it would add an element of LUCK as well.
ClearHooter 04-09-2009, 11:41 PM Wow! Zeb...Your concept is taking on a life of its own.
I remebered what I called the other car..."Daytona Roadster"...Duh! New it couldn't have been that abstract a name. By hard definition the AC Daytona wasn't completely scrap (Unless you want to consider that staggard wheeled HW Daytona Coupe junk from the start. Don't get me wrong I appreciate the casting; because I'd of never cut up an accurate Daytona Coupe.) I used a sand lot AC Cobra beater for half. But the "Daytona Roadster" was a true scrap build using the leftovers from the first build.

I see that! It's pretty interesting watching this all unfold. By the way, these two cars are mighty fine. I really like the long nose cars you build.
ClearHooter 04-09-2009, 11:50 PM Thanks...Their mostly scrap too.
jnkfleet 04-13-2009, 10:26 PM Since Clear Hooter brought this idea before us..I'll ask his permission to give the green flag on it.
What do you say CH?
Let's get this "Show and Tell" custom build event started. Everybody Ready?
1. anyone can participate
2. anything built from scrap parts is O.K.
3. help from members is encouraged and welcomed as needed
4. photos of parts, in progress building, and completetion are a must
5. project can be Simple or Outrageous as your mind can concieve.
6. timeline is from the Go! until August 1 2009 (roughly 4 months..projects could still make it to AutoFest).
If CH says GO!...It's On!
Gift for the cause...
I for one will package up a surplus of parts to go to the most interesting finished build(s)..Sound Good?

I like this whole idea! Just kinda waiting for it to get started. I've been looking at some junk already. Trying to get that hmmmm thing going.
In the words of Doc Holiday... "say when".
BudJ63 04-17-2009, 01:21 AM Rounding up some scrap now!
"Seems My hypocracy has no bounds."
( I guess we all have to use a Tombstone quote)

OK (thats fits) We will meet in Tombstone! Not literally, but this does sound fun. Is the ADDWC the charity? Maybe I'll name mine Wyatt.
Val Kilmer was my favorite though.
ClearHooter 04-17-2009, 01:55 AM Sorry, been away a couple days....................GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
bob8748 04-17-2009, 01:58 AM No. The Tombstone thing was just me and Jeff playing. Its whatever whoever wants to do whatever. Make sense? Just for fun is the main reason. I like the charity idea. Still waiting on Clearhooter. I'm just willing to play.
bob8748 04-17-2009, 02:00 AM Sorry, been away a couple days....................GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
Wow... typing at the same time...
I take it a go then?
ClearHooter 04-17-2009, 02:16 AM Still waiting on Clearhooter.
Not any more.....
Sorry, I've had a full plate the last several days. Had an etching to do over the last couple days.
Got "hornswaggled" into a battle of the bands...More or less under a false pretext. But my bands name went up on the bill and then the "rules" changed into a BOB. Soooo we've been rehearsing after work as well as the after hours etching work.
Any of y'all close to Midtown Sundries at Lake Norman, NC and feel the need for a road trip, come out and hear us. 9:00 this Saturday....Support us..... It's about a 90 minute drive for us. So I'm not expecting much support from my immediate area.
I swore I'd NEVER get into another BOB. Even if we were to win this Saturday I still say they're all rigged.
But back to the subject at hand......GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!:thumbs up::thumbsup::thumbsup:
bob8748 04-17-2009, 02:24 AM Hey... good luck with the battle! I believe rigged for locals, but I dont know. I have been really impressed by some travelers! Give it your best shot and have fun with it. I havent picked my guitar up in a long time. I envy you guys!!!
ClearHooter 04-19-2009, 02:56 PM 1st place tie......They had more people there than we did so we ended up second. I think if our guitar player had of been able to make it we'd of won the thing. "It was tight as Dick's hat band." Glad its over. Got a paying gig and some Charlotte exposure out of it; which is all we were expecting anyway.
