View Full Version : Ideas on Building a 1/4 scale car hauler rack
Slider 04-02-2009, 07:50 AM Okay, I am looking for ideas on how to build a rack to set the cars in, "one above the other", against a inside race trailer wall. Need something light but will hold cars firmly without tieing them down. Give me your ideas. Thanks Paul:thumbsup:
jbell31 04-02-2009, 09:38 AM You have to tie them down, but the lightest I've seen is put a set of adjustable closet shelf racks in on the side of the trailer. The ones from Home Depot or Lowes (low cost too). the ones with steel slots with 10 inch shelving braces and you put the shelving braces in where you want them. Put padding on the braces and the wall and no shelves. You can just use a few light weight bungies from the frame to the wall down low. Easy in and easy out.
willyplankhead 04-02-2009, 09:46 AM Got to do the same thing paul but gona build it out of 2x4's and use bunge cords to strap them down
IN2RACIN 04-02-2009, 09:58 AM I would think you would want a shelf that either folds down, or is removable? To make room so u could walk / move around inside…?
Chance62 04-02-2009, 11:16 AM I built a shelf unit out of 2x4's and osb plywood. I made a frame for each shelf out of the 2x4's and screwed the plywood to the bottom. Because the plywood is on the bottom, it makes a place for the car to set down into without strapping them down. I have room for about 12 cars in my trailer the way I did it. Each rack holds 4 cars and is about 4' long, 2' deep, and about
6' high.
Denny Andrews 04-02-2009, 12:40 PM I really like the way we did ours. Actually Mom thought up the idea, but saves alot of room, can't be any lighter than it is, and doesn't take up any room when the cars are off of them.
As you can see in the pic, we put up hooks on the front wall of the trailer, then we put 2 small spring loaded "Clips" down lower, these are spaced out to the width of the frame rails right about where the rear trailing arms are. Just hook the car up on the front bumper, then press in the frame rails into the "clips" below and the car is solid. Just remember to take out the fuel after running, which should be done anyways, right?
Never had a problem with this set up!
Slider 04-02-2009, 02:41 PM To all who Post on there method, could you post a pic as well. good ideas. keep em coming.
ghilber 04-02-2009, 06:43 PM Hope this works. I am attaching 3 pics of a carrier that I use to haul 3 cars. Also, under the car is room for a canopy and folding chairs

thats a good idea there. i think i may build one like that for two cars.
does the cars fit in the rack with the bodies on?
ghilber 04-02-2009, 08:02 PM Yes they do.
jbrooks39 04-02-2009, 08:23 PM And to compliment Greg and put things in perspective..., that is a Honda Element that Greg uses to transport "Big Dog Racing" to the track.
It is tiddy and efficient.

Slider 04-03-2009, 09:06 PM Thanks. For all the different ideas.
I think Jbell was talking about something like these, but mounted in a trailer. I have used these for years in my garage and they work fantastic. After you remove the car, you could remove the shelf bracket really easy since they just hook in.
Slider 04-04-2009, 07:16 PM Just doesn't seem very good at holding them while trailer is in movement bumps etc. sliding around on just 2 thin brackets.even with a bungy cord.
I put foam pipe insulation on the arms. I then use velcro straps around the bracket into the chassis or A arms. I do this because of earthquakes. The brackets can not come out by lifting straight up. You need to tilt them in a 45 deg angle and then lift up. This system is also very strong. Never had a car fall but then again we have only had a 4.0 earthquake while living in this house. They say that in a trailer or motorhome its closer to a 7.0
jbell31 04-05-2009, 01:58 PM Yep, it'll hold. The thing you have to worry about is the other crap in the trailer hitting the cars. The cars don't move at all, but I have had a few things hit the car. But we pack the trailer with too much stuff...lol.
It's a good system, I'll take pictures after the DFW trip and post them.
Paul,
I answered your PM with some other ideas too.
Slider 04-05-2009, 02:12 PM Thanks Mr Jim.
disruptor 11 04-06-2009, 02:19 PM A few hooks, some metal strap, a little welding, big screws, and a few bungees....Good To Go!
