After a layoff of a couple of years, "Flexi" racing will be returning to The Race Place in Holly Hill on Friday nights.
To begin with, we're racing Spec NASCAR, GTP (both by My Series rules) and Vintage Racing (by FVSRA rules).
The Spec NASCAR will take place on the 110 foot lap length 'replica' of Daytona International Speedway. It is a very fast oval with lap times in the 2.5 to 2.7 second range.
Both GTP and Vintage will be held on the road course, which is a 'replica' of the same course that the Rolex 24 is raced on.
Racing action starts at 8 PM and concludes when we're all finished.
This past Friday evening we had a total of 6 racers show up and even thought the head count was a bit low, the fun factor was almost through the roof.
In his inimitable style, Greg Walker, proprietor of The Race Place, decided to "run 4 high and 4 low". This track has the ability to be configured either to run the high bank tri-oval or also to add the infield into the course. Well black, purple, yellow and blue were set up to run the infield course and orange, green, white and red were setup to run just the tri-oval. Talk about something that takes a bit of getting use to! Here you are running neck and neck with a car on orange and you are on the blue lane. You come close to the tri-oval section knowing full well that you have to blip the throttle to get through without incident. As you get back into the throttle you are watching the car in the orange lane, just waiting for him to start braking for the infield. Well he shoots by as he is on the tri-oval, but you de-slot as you have the sharp lefthand turn to make into the infield! Yes, it happens.
Of course since you race 4 lanes on the low side (infield) and 4 lanes on the high side (tri-oval only) it's really hard to know where your competition is! Laps on the tri-oval happen in the 2.5 to 2.7 second range. The laps on the infield are in the 4.9 to 5.1 second range! Talk about now knowing what's happening with your competition! It's a real challenge. However it is a lot of fun!
This coming Friday, April 3rd we will be running My Series Spec NASCAR and GTP once again. You can use this as a good setup / practice session to get both you and your cars ready for the My Series race that will be held there on the very next day, Saturday April 4th.
Hope to see many of you there this Friday!
The Race Place opens at 6PM and the track is open for practice about 6:01 PM.
