View Full Version : How Different Are Capacitors???
DOUGHBOY 03-28-2009, 06:40 PM I Currently Run A Tekin Rs Speed Control Which I Love... I Know That You Shouldn't Run Your Speedo With Out A Cap On It But Do You Have To Use The One That Came With It.. The Reason Why I Ask Is Because The Wire On My Cap Pulled Out And I Dont Think I Will Be Able To Get An Actual Tekin One Before I Race. I Guess What I Am Asking Is Can I Use A Cap From Like A Novak Speedo Or From Like A Spektrum Receiver? Any Advice Would Be Great..
Thanks

If you have a Novak TransCap module from a GTB, it should install and work fine.
Matt Nothstein 03-28-2009, 07:13 PM If I were you, i wouldn't use any other cap other than what has been used with the RS. On the top of the cap there are numbers. I believe they are 16v 330uF. Try a radio shack and see what they got..wouldn't hurt..

IT DOES STILL HAVE THE NUMBERS ON IT SO AS LONG AS I CAN FIND ONE WITH MATCHING NUMBERS I SHOULD BE OK??? I REALLY ONLY WANT TO USE ONE FROM TEKIN BUT I DONT KNOW IF I WILL BE ABLE TO GET ONE BEFORE MY NEXT RACE
Matt Nothstein 03-28-2009, 08:24 PM Yes. As long as the numbers match with your cap, you should be all set.
ScottH 03-28-2009, 08:30 PM As long as the numbers are the same you are good to go.
CClay1282 03-28-2009, 10:00 PM What is the point to the capacitors anyway? Also, why couldnt you go with a bigger one. The reason tekin used 16v caps is because of being able to run 3 cell lipos. But as long as you are runnin 2 cell or less then why couldnt you use a 10v with a higher micro farad rating?
DOUGHBOY 03-28-2009, 10:18 PM good question? can some one explain...
ta_man 03-29-2009, 10:18 AM There is more to capacitor specs than just the capacitance (330) and voltage (16V).
For these applications you need a capacitor that has a very low "ESR" (equivalent series resistance). If the ESR is high, the capacitor can't charge and discharge as fast (the higher ESR acts like a bottleneck in charging and discharging) so the cap won't be as effective. It will also run hotter and deteriorate faster because of the heat.
It is unlikely that radio shack will have Low ESR capacitors as they cost more to make.
That part I know. The part I don't know is whether using a larger capacity cap would compensate for having a higher ESR. But if you plan to buy a cap from RS, you might try getting one bigger than 330.
NovakTwo 03-29-2009, 10:56 AM Here is an article we added on the necessity of using the power capacitors, and how to select them:
NOVAK ELECTRONICS POWER CAPACITOR (http://www.teamnovak.com/tech_info/power_caps/power_caps.htm)
You can use the GTB Transcap module as a power cap replacement for any brush or brushless 2s racing controller.
We also offer modules for 4s HV controllers, and escs using 4s-6s lipos.
CClay1282 03-29-2009, 11:04 AM Very informative article. Thanks.
tgardner41 03-29-2009, 02:49 PM Novak says their power capacitor module will give you more RPM, and that some of their racers use two power caps. Why not use three power caps, four or six, etc??
:dude:

For the same reason you do not run three or four battery packs in parallel. As long as there is enough capacity to smooth out the ripple effect, the extra is just added weight. No more speed will be gained.

THIS RIGHT HERE SHOWS WHY NOVAK HAS ONE OF THE BEST CUSTOMER SERVICE DEPARTMENTS IN THE BUSINESS.. I AM NOT TRYING TO TAKE AWAY ANYTHING FROM TEKIN BECAUSE I THINK THEY ARE JUST AS GOOD I JUST THOUGHT IT WAS REALLY COOL THAT SOME ONE FROM NOVAK TOOK THE TIME TO HELP SOMEONE THAT HAD A GENERAL QUESTION ABOUT ANOTHER COMPANIES PRODUCT EVEN THOUGH THERE WAS NO REAL GAIN FOR NOVAK AS A COMPANY. THANKS AGAIN NOVAK AND KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK...

Thanks for the nice compliments. We have always focused on repair/upgrade items---even 25 years ago. In fact some items we offer today are really upgraded or redesigned items from long ago---switch harnesses, input harnesses, heat sinks, external caps, wire, glitch busters, etc.
Bob started out as an airplane modeler. Novak had businesses early on--'70s---that offered electronics for planes and other air models. Airplane guys are tinkerers---like to fix their own stuff. So, we have always placed a priority on designs that allow the user a high degree of repairability and upgradeability, with minimum possible damage to the components.
But, being able to make simple repairs isn't enough unless you can easily find the parts you need, when you need them. So an additional focus has been making those accessories available to Novak customers.
